6 EDITORIAL NOTES: Date o compositio: February 191 Mauscript: Clare College, Cambridge Origial key. [ e sog has previously oly bee published i trasposed versios i F ad G maors] Duratio: ca.4 miutes e subtitle, Pava, is give i editorial square brackets o the mauscript by W. Deis Browe ad is ot the work o the editor o this editio. e theme upo which the accompaimet is based as a Almaye rom Elizabeth Roger s Virgial Book a movemet ecoutered by Deis Browe i 1908 whe Edward Det used it i the icidetal music or the Cambridge terceteial perormace o oh Milto s Comus, perormed i the gardes o Christ s College. e rst sketch or the sog was made i November 1912, whe i a letter to Edward Det, Deis Browe reported: I have got a trilogy o sogs or you to dam: at least I hope you will dam them, though I shall be sorry i you codem them. I have thought them out with immese pais, ad airly sweated blood over them: [...] oe [viz. To Gratiaa] is thick ad I ear rather pompous ad the secod verse has o raiso d etre or its accompaimet: but I thik it will soud good. e scheme is somebody dacig a pava all the time (Comus pava, oly you would t kow it) while the observer keeps up a detatched commetary sittig o a bech by the wall with his head betwee his hads. [...] Oe o the iterludes is a step i the directio I suggested to [Armstrog] Gibbs the other day, which I am hal araid he took seriously i.e. a sog with accompaimet supplied by harmoies iduced sympathetically rom a piao i the ext room (die Taste tolos iederdrucke!), the words sug bouche ermeé, ad the melodic lie adumbrated by rhythmic motios o the body. e work would o course be prited i ivisible sympathetic ik. [ALS, 20.xi.1912. Kig s College, E.. Det Collectio] I a article published i the Leamigto Spa Courier o 10 February 1922, Two Notable Sogs William Deis Browe s work, [Browe was bor i Leamigto Spa] Edward Det tells how Browe's early attempts at the settig were absurdly ieectual, but which he slowly hoed to the al versio o February 191. Edward Det saw the sog to publicatio by Withrop Rogers i 192. He also scored the sog or strigs i 1918 ad showed the score to Hery Wood or possible iclusio i the Quee s Hall Proms. To Gratiaa dacig ad sigig was almost certaily writte or his close ried, the teor Steuart Wilso. Textual otes: b.10.1, voice: a duplet sig has bee removed rom above the rst two otes by the editor. e umber was super uous, ust reiorcig the chage rom the precedig triplets ito straight quavers. b.25.i, R.H.: origially writte as a acciaccatura E, crossed through ad replaced with appoggiatura F. It could be that Deis Browe has omitted to cross the appoggiatura i correctig the ote (the later repeat o the phrase is a acciaccatura) or it could be that the start o the phrase is beig purposely poited up by the use o the slower appoggiatura. b.6.iv, L.H.: chord origially reads upwards G, D, F. b.8. iv, R.H.: the last beat o the bar, although aliged with the quaver i the vocal lie, it is writte as a crotchet with a crotchet rest beeath it. Give the dotted crotchet i the precedig ote the crotchet has bee shorteed to a quaver ad a quaver rest iserted to complete the quaver movemet i this last beat. b.54.iii, voice: the published versios (published posthumously) give the equivalet o a F but Deis Browe s origial clearly states Es.
