Introduction Sling Media offers an award-winning line of placeshifting products, including Slingbox, Sling Monitor 150, Sling Receiver 300, and SlingPlayer. These products encompass a range of hardware, software, and services that deliver the most compelling placeshifting experience to consumers across three screens: TV, computer, and mobile phone. What is placeshifting? Placeshifting technology allows anyone with a broadband Internet connection to have video streams from their home television set, DVR, or other video source (such as a DVD player or home security camera) forwarded for viewing remotely on a computer, netbook, or mobile phone at any location where they have a high-speed Internet connection, cellular data network, or Wi-Fi network. Placeshifted content can be live or recorded (DVR) programming, and can be enjoyed on the home network or away from home over the Internet. Most consumers do both placeshifting in and around their home where they do not have a TV, as well as away from their home at work, at a café, or in their hotel room halfway around the world. The inspiration for placeshifting came from the desire to watch home baseball games while traveling for business. Placeshifting lets consumers catch the game live, wherever they are. Their TV subscription service and associated content follows them wherever they have an Internet connection. Sling Media 2

Placeshifting versus timeshifting: what s the difference? About ten years ago, we began to hear about timeshifting and a new category of products called digital video recorders (DVRs). The DVR allowed users to record a program and watch it later, at a more convenient time. Consumers could record programs using their VCR, but the DVR automated the process and added more features and capabilities. The DVR allows users to access and watch TV programming they ve already paid for at a more convenient time not just when it is broadcast. However, timeshifted content is still watched locally, in the home on the TV to which the DVR is connected. Placeshifting is broader and encompasses timeshifting. Placeshifting technology lets consumers watch live or timeshifted content (from their DVR) on any device with an Internet connection, anywhere they happen to be. Users can watch a live broadcast or recorded program remotely on their computer, mobile phone, or even another TV. Sling Media 3

Types of placeshifting technologies IP-connected consumer electronics devices can provide placeshifting functionality from a video source such as a television, set-top box, or DVR. Sling Media s Slingbox, Sony s LocationFree and Monsoon Multimedia HAVA are examples of standalone products that, when connected to your home entertainment system, allow you to stream video to another device such as a computer, netbook, or mobile phone. Placeshifting functionality can also be built in to the set-top box, DVR, or other IP-connected device. DISH Network s ViP 922 SlingLoaded DVR is an example of a SlingLoaded DVR from Echostar (Sling Media s parent company). EchoStar has also announced the SlingLoaded T2200S HD DVR for cable operators. Computer software applications and services from MythTV, Orb Networks, CyberLink, Sharpcast, and Syabas Technology facilitate placeshifting of media stored on your PC to a remote laptop computer or phone. These software applications work similarly to remote desktop software like pcanywhere in their ability to view and control devices (and specifically media stored on those devices) remotely. Obviously, users are limited to the content on their home computer. Now, with products from Sling Media, users can placeshift the video content on their home theater devices. Why consumers are embracing placeshifting VALUE Why let a valuable programming subscription go to waste? Consumers who spend a great deal of time away from home use placeshifting technology to access their existing content delivery services sitting at work, in a café or a hotel room. Consumers also placeshift in their homes using their home network to catch a movie from the kitchen, the patio, or the master bedroom. Placeshifting technology eliminates the need for a second cable or satellite TV subscription in a second home; it lets snowbirds keep up with what s going on back home. FLEXIBILITY Placeshifting technology lets users access and control their home theater and A/V devices containing premium or personal content anytime, anywhere. And, they can do so on any of their three screens TV, laptop, or mobile whichever is more convenient for the time and place. Users have multiple options for devices that receive placeshifted content: Computer typically a portable laptop or netbook, but it could also be a desktop computer at home or in the office. Handheld device usually a video-capable mobile phone or smartphone. Sling Media 4

TV placeshift to a TV in another room in your home or vacation home sparing the expense of additional subscriptions. EASE OF USE Placeshifting software ensures a familiar and consistent user interface and means of navigation across all three screens. Placeshifting spares the user from a hodgepodge of interfaces and channel lineups from a range of mobile and Internet content providers. CONTROL Placeshifting lets users manage their DVR anytime, anywhere, giving them greater control over their content. FREEDOM Placeshifting technology means that users never have to miss a show. How pervasive is the interest in placeshifting? Industry interest in placeshifting technology is growing quickly as consumer demand increases, the market migrates to the mainstream, and the technologies mature. The largest MSOs (cable and satellite TV service providers) are already offering placeshifting services. Cellular network providers are exploring these services to complement their mobile TV offerings. Manufacturers of IP-connected hardware devices, such as set-top boxes, game consoles, and HDTVs, are exploring the role of integrated placeshifting technology in their products. Television Service Providers (MSOs) For the MSOs, a placeshifting offering can differentiate their services and provide customers with a compelling reason to remain loyal. DISH Network is the first to announce a digital video recorder with embedded placeshifting technology. According to Jimmy Schaeffler, chairman of the consulting firm The Carmel Group, this DVR will give the satellite operator a leg up DISH Network s new DVR with embedded placeshifting technology. on cable for now. This is going to be a must-have for a large segment of high-end, sophisticated subscribers, Schaeffler said. But, the cable operators aren t far behind. The three largest U.S. cable operators Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications are laying the groundwork for Sling Media 5

place-shifting services that would allow subscribers to access their channel lineups on a PC, from anywhere on the Internet. 1 Long has it been discussed that consumers will cut their coaxial cables for video service and enjoy the blissful vistas of Internet content. But consumers are not yet ready to do this, and new pay TV services such as placeshifting could turn the tide against coax cutting. (Yankee Group, Will Consumers Ax the Coax or Pay in Perpetuity, June 1, 2009) For the MSOs, the value-added service of placeshifting can prevent loss of customers to a competitor, or perhaps worse, to the growing number of video content providers on the Internet such as Hulu, Joost, or Veoh. Industry analysts are debating the impact of free Internet web sites such as Hulu on the MSOs, and whether consumers will be enticed to give up their pay TV services. Some analysts believe a placeshifting service offering is one way to dissuade the abandonment of pay TV services. MSOs benefit from offering placeshifting services in a number of ways. Placeshifting services differentiate and increase the value of their offering to current and potential consumers, thereby reducing churn and potentially growing the subscriber base. The value to subscribers increases exponentially when they can take advantage of the service more frequently and in more places. For MSOs, consider also the impact on their brand, which is being extended across three platforms or screens and continually being reinforced. The MSO now owns the customer experience wherever they are. Placeshifting is a value-added service and new source of revenue. Placeshifting services can also have implications for ad revenues. If content is accessible more often and in more places, viewership of various programs increases, as does viewership of the advertising within those programs. Consumers have a choice of purchasing a placeshifting solution at retail or subscribing to placeshifting services. Both are appealing, but depend upon the consumer s disposable income and comfort level with installing audio/video equipment. Those opting to subscribe to a placeshifting service may find the nominal fee added to a monthly bill easier to absorb than the cost of a hardware solution purchased at retail. They may prefer to have the solution installed by their TV service provider instead of doing it themselves. Or, they may prefer a single, integrated solution (inside the set-top box or DVR) that is more elegant than the addition of yet another box under the TV. 1 Ops Seek Rights to 'Place-Shift'. Top Cable Firms Want Option to 'Sling' TV Via Web by Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 1/18/2009 Sling Media 6

Mobile service providers Mobile network service providers view placeshifting as complementary to their own mobile TV service offerings. Placeshifting services are simply a broader value-added service that can be sold in conjunction with unlimited or tiered data plans. It is yet another source of revenue that doesn t require new deals with content providers. For consumers, the personal nature of mobile phones and the ability to customize them to meet individual needs drives the desire to access favorite channels and shows not just those that are included in most mobile TV plans. The benefit to the mobile service provider is increased customer stickiness or retention. Current users of placeshifting solutions for the mobile phone access their content using a mix of Wi-Fi (two-thirds) and 3G (one-third). Wi-Fi can provide a better video quality and is less expensive, but is not as readily available. A 3G network is generally always available, but charges can be high (particularly if roaming) and video quality can be slightly lower. 3G user sessions tend to be brief snippets, while Wi-Fi sessions tend to be longer. 2 Hardware manufacturers For hardware manufacturers, integrating placeshifting functionality creates product differentiation and new market opportunities that can positively impact the bottom line. To date, those exploring placeshifting solutions include manufacturers of set-top boxes, routers, game consoles, personal media players, and television sets. Those are just the ones that we are aware of. Sounds good but what are the challenges? Like any groundbreaking technology there are always challenges to overcome, but security is the one challenge that Sling Media is most often asked about. Security Sling Media is often asked about the legal implications of intellectual property and the rebroadcast of copyrighted material. The practice of placeshifting is not too unlike that of timeshifting, which has been upheld in courts across the world due to the personal nature of a timeshifted rebroadcast, which has been deemed non-infringing fair use. Sling Media secure technology limits access to a single authorized user (preventing unauthorized or multi-user access), thereby maintaining the personal nature of the placeshifted content. 2 Sling Media survey conducted in June 2009 among UK customers. Sling Media 7

Why look at placeshifting now? Consumers are ready to embrace placeshifting. Awareness is becoming mainstream 25% of those who could placeshift have heard of it, and 3% are doing it using a Sling Media solution. 3 Penetration is likely higher, given the number of placeshifting solutions currently available. A recent study from The Diffusion Group found that consumers are not only ready to embrace placeshifting functionality, but are also willing to pay for it. 16% of Pay TV subscribers who spend more than $100/month for TV service would spend $20/month to get this same TV programming on their PCs. 4 40% 30% 20% 10% 0% Percentage of TV Households50% DVR and Placeshifting Penetration Rates by Year Year DVR Penetration Several key industry trends facilitate and drive category growth. Consumers worldwide pay for and use broadband Internet services to access content. Twenty-nine percent of adult Americans with broadband pay for (faster) premium services and 57% of online adults watch or download video. 5 More than 50% of broadband customers have a home network and many of them are distributing content around the home and across platforms. 6 What's more, on-the-go Internet access has become widely accepted and widely used. And, it s not just on the computer. Over one-third of US mobile phone subscribers pay for mobile Internet as part of their data plan and a similar proportion has a video-capable phone. 7 Consider also the explosive growth in IP-enabled consumer electronics products for the home, including DVRs, TVs, game consoles, Blu-ray players, and others. More and more products are able to distribute content inside and outside the home. 3 4 5 6 7 Sling Media survey conducted in January 2009 among US adults with broadband Internet services, 1+ computers, 1+ TVs, and pay TV services at home that spend an average of 5+ hours watching TV per week. Placeshifting is poised to take off as consumers increasingly demand the functionality, hardware manufacturers integrate the technology into their products, and television service providers offer it as a value-added service. DVRs were originally offered as hardware solutions sold at retail, but after the timeshifting functionality was integrated into the solutions offered by pay TV operators, the market took off. The explosive growth of placeshifting is likely to mirror that of timeshifting and the market for DVRs. 8 20% 18% 16% 14% 12% 10% 8% 6% 4% 2% 0% 1999 / 2005 DVR and Placeshifting Growth Rate Comparison 2000 / 2006 2001 / 2002 / 2003 / 2004 / 2005 / 2006 / 2007 / 2007DVR 2008Year 2009 / Placeshifting 2010e2011e2012e Year 2013e DVR Penetration The Sling Media placeshifting experience How it works The Slingbox is connected to the video source (such as a set-top box, DVR, DVD player, or security camera) and home network router. The video signal comes from the source (via S- Video, component or composite cable) and is directed to the Slingbox where it is transcoded into MPEG4 and transmitted over the network and out over the Internet. 8 CTAM, Nielsen s 3 Screen Report, ABI Research, IBM s Online Viewing Habits study, Internet World Stats, ComScore, and Solutions Research Group Sling Media 9

A set-top box, DVR or other IP-enabled device that is SlingLoaded eliminates the need for the separate piece of hardware (or Slingbox). Consumers either use the web-based SlingPlayer software or install the SlingPlayer client software on the platforms from which they want to remotely access their content. The software works in conjunction with streaming technology to connect to the video source so that consumers can view their video content as well as control the video source, including changing channels and managing a recording queue for a DVR. What distinguishes Sling Media placeshifting technology? Superior technology and scalable services allow Sling Media to deliver the most compelling experience across the three screens. Whether consumers are watching from a computer within their home network or watching from a laptop halfway around the world, the experience looks and feels the same. Some of the technology and services that distinguish the Sling Media placeshifting experience include: SPARCS means that we always know the location of any SlingLoaded device; each has a unique ID and is in regular communication with the SPARCS server, providing consumers with an instant and guaranteed connection to their SlingLoaded devices. (SPARCS: Sling Products Authentication and Registration Control System.) SlingStream technology ensures the highest quality video under all network bandwidth conditions and screen resolutions. o Encoding quality that adapts to client device and screen capabilities o Reliable UDP-based streaming with network-adaptive bit-rate control to ensure smooth video streaming under a wide range of network conditions o Audio-only mode for low bandwidth conditions Sling Media 10

SlingSecure means placeshifted content is secured and limited to only one authorized user at a time o Studio-approved content protection system o User and device authentication so that only authorized viewers have access to paid content SlingPlayers provide consistency and compatibility across a range of devices. o Sling Media continuously expanding SlingPlayer support across a range of platforms and devices o SlingPlayer clients for the Mac, Windows, and mobile platforms o A convenient web-based SlingPlayer The SlingNet infrastructure and technology ensures a reliable and automatic connection regardless of user location and network restrictions. o Self-triggering multi-layer connectivity algorithms to eliminate the complexity of home and external networks for 100% reliable and automatic connection, with three methods of connection: TCP, UDP, TCP via web proxy o SlingNet technology integrated in both hardware and client player software o Streaming guaranteed even under the most restrictive firewall environments Sling Accounts maintains the customer s profile and preferences such as favorites, for a consistent experience across all screens regardless of client being used. EPG Services provide an up-to-date and easy-to-use electronic programming guide based on the TV services to which the customer subscribes and the location of the SlingLoaded set-top box.
