Questions! What should be the role, or function, of good baton technique or conducting technique? An advanced wind ensemble musician who has spent four years in a top high school band program defined this function as providing both the meter and expression against which I play. On the other hand, beginning musicians describe the conductor as keeping the beat. No matter what terms are used to express this function, perhaps differently by each musician, it can only mean that the conductor provides certain signals at a given time to which the musicians respond. A conductor whose signals are clear and uncomplicated will communicate more clearly to middle school and high school student musicians in less time. R. Gerry Long, author of The Conductor s Workshop, states, Certainly with an amateur band, choir or orchestra, a simple conducting style will be most understandable. Perhaps the conductor of the best professional musicians can afford the luxury of an extravagant and theatrical baton technique, but with a lesser band, choir or orchestra, such a technique can only slow the learning process and endanger the overall performance. It is interesting to note that most of the finest orchestral conductors in the United States display clear conducting styles with efficient expressive non-verbal elements. It is important that the conductor learn to conduct even the most elementary patterns with utmost clarity and that he/she not be encouraged to attempt more difficult works involving complicated patterns and other hand gestures until his/her basic meter patterns are clear and secure. Moreover, one must take into account if his/her students can basically understand his/her conductor s patterns. Once this is accomplished, then the conductor can move forward incorporating non-verbal expressive elements into his/her conducting style. Simply stated, if the conductor has a clear concept of what the musicians are looking for in conducting, he/she will be better able to communicate with the band, choir or orchestra. Long, R. Gerry. The Conductor s Workshop. Wm. C. Brown Company Publishers. 1977. Page 68. How many bags of luggage can my child take? Your child should limit their luggage to one suitcase and one carry-on. This will expedite checkin and checkout, as well as allowing more space for storage on charter buses. Each student may be asked to handle his/her own luggage and instruments (per instructions of director) when loading and unloading charter buses, and upon checking in and out of the hotel.
