ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES JAZZ INSTITUTE The Los Angeles Jazz Institute houses and maintains one of the largest jazz archives in the world. All styles and eras are represented with a special emphasis on the preservation and documentation of jazz in southern California. Many artists personal collections are being preserved at the Institute including the archives of Howard Rumsey, Bud Shank, Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, June Christy, Pete Rugolo, Johnny Richards, Ken Hanna, Dr.Wesley LaViolette, Jimmie Baker, Sleepy Stein and Ray Avery. The Jazz Institute actively uses the materials in the archive by maintaining a busy schedule of outreach activities including concerts, festivals, broadcasts, publications and the release of important recordings on compact disc. The Institute is housed at California State University Long Beach. The Institute is used by teachers, scholars, students, musicians, independent researchers, the media and the industry. For more information go to our web site www.lajazzinstitute.org The concept of the Orchestra was to feature new works by a variety of the most outstanding composers and arrangers in the jazz world. Our program reflects the ideals set forth by the original Neophonic Orchestra by presenting a number of Big Bands led by artists associated with the original Orchestra as well as concerts performing original Neophonic music. Much of this music has not been heard in a live setting since it s premier. In addition to the original composers conducting their own works, we are also featuring works by Shorty Rogers, Marty Paich, Stan Kenton and Johnny Richards. The Los Angeles Neophonic inspired two other significant Orchestras: The Collegiate Junior Neophonic of Southern California and Joel Kaye s New York Neophonic. Joel will present a concert of New York Neophonic music and for this occasion we are putting together a College All-Star Big Band in the spirit of the Junior Neophonic. To top it all off, we will once again feature 3 University Big Bands plus the High School Jazz America Ensemble. This looks to be another outstanding event and I hope to see you there.
