Coundon Court Music Department Years 9, 10 & 11

Learning to play an instrument can bring rewards that last a lifetime, and with devoted study, the skills learnt during instrumental lessons can provide a pastime that will give pleasure for many years. At Coundon Court we have a team of specialist Peripatetic Instrumental Teachers, who offer tuition in the following areas: Violin Clarinet Bass Guitar Viola Oboe Classical/Electric Guitar Cello Bassoon Horn Double Bass Trumpet Tuba Flute Euphonium Drum Kit Saxophone Trombone Flugle Horn Baritone French Horn Lessons take place in the Music Department, every week for 34 weeks during the academic year. They usually last for 20 minutes each, and where possible for KS4 are arranged before/after school, at break and at lunch times so that GCSE lessons are not affected. Please note some Year 9 lessons may still need to be on a rota as there may be too many lessons for break and lunch times.

Please return to the PAC office at Coundon Court Request for Instrumental Tuition Name of student: Tutor Group (Sept 2015): Year Group (Sept 2015): Instrument: I wish my son/daughter to have musical tuition and am prepared to pay: 40 parental contribution (school subsidises the balance)per term for group tuition 80 parental contribution (school subsidises the balance) per term for paired tuition I qualify for free school meals (or have done in the last 6 years) and would like the school to consider covering this cost from Pupil Premium. I would like to borrow a school instrument (subject to availability) My son/daughter is studying music at GCSE Signature: Please print name: Mr/Mrs/Miss Address: (parent/guardian) Daytime Tel No: Mobile: (in case of queries) (or alternative contact No.) Email: (BLOCK CAPITALS PLEASE)

WHAT DO I DO NOW? Please detach the request form and return it to the PAC office as soon as possible, so that we can arrange the correct number of teaching hours. At the start of the academic year a formal contract will be issued to each student. Please read it carefully, sign and return it immediately so that tuition can be arranged. Please also make sure that you include a current email address at the bottom of the request form as we will use this to contact you with information about your child s instrumental lessons during the academic year. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR CHILD S TUITION CANNOT COMMENCE UNTIL THE FORMAL CONTRACT IS SIGNED AND RETURNED. You will then be sent an invoice, which should be paid within seven days (to Coundon Court) and taken to the Finance Office in the Old House. If it has been agreed that Pupil Premium will cover the cost, then this will be done automatically by the school. Should you wish to terminate the contract, half a term s written notice must be given to Mr Larkin in the PAC and preferably to the e-mail address instrumental.tuition@coundoncourt.org TO SECURE A PLACE FOR YOUR CHILD BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER, THE REQUEST FORM SHOULD BE RETURNED TO THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE OFFICE NO LATER THAN JUNE 27 st 2015. Please contact Mrs G Larkin (Head of Performing Arts) if you have any queries: instrumental.tuition@coundoncourt.org 02476 335121 **Please retain this booklet for your future reference**

WHAT ARE THE CHARGES? The school subsidises a proportion of the tuition costs and parental contribution make up the remainder. The current charges to parents per term are: 80 for tuition in pairs 40 for group tuition GCSE Music students receive a reduction of 10. Please do not hesitate to contact the department if you have any queries regarding your child s suitability for a particular instrument. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE For those children who are eligible there are some assisted places available e.g. for those eligible for Free School Meals. These lessons will be provided on a group basis. Please tick the relevant box on the request form if you wish to be considered for an assisted place. The finance office will then contact you to confirm if you child is eligible for an assisted place and if they require any paper work from you. Only one application per child can be accepted. Second instruments are subject to the normal termly charge.

WHAT INSTRUMENTS CAN BE BORROWED FROM THE SCHOOL? Students who have had instrumental lessons at their Primary school have priority regarding borrowing an instrument from Coundon Court as long as the request form is sent to the department before the summer holiday. Any remaining instruments will be allocated in September. The school currently has one or more of the following instruments in stock: Violin (¾, full size) Guitar Viola Flute Cello (½, ¾, full size) Oboe Double Bass Clarinet Trumpet Bassoon Cornet Euphonium Flugel Horn Trombone Baritone Horn Tuba Alto Saxophone French Horn Tenor Saxophone In addition, pianos, drum kits and electric/bass guitars can be used at school to practice at break, lunchtime or after school.

WHERE CAN INSTRUMENTS BE STORED? There are instrumental storage areas available in the PAC. Students are asked not to leave instruments in the department overnight though. Please ensure that the instrument is included on your home contents insurance (including instruments borrowed from school) and that your son/daughter s name and form is clearly marked on or inside the case. Unfortunately, the school cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to instruments owned or borrowed by students. WHAT EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE ON OFFER? The Music Department offers the opportunity for students to participate in ensembles and perform in concerts in and around the community. Students who receive instrumental tuition are required to join one of these ensembles and take part in Music Concerts at Christmas and in the Summer Term (rehearsals will usually be held at lunchtime). This is an excellent way of developing their music and social skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Activities currently on offer include: Lower School Orchestra Brass Group Percussion Ensemble Flute Ensemble Soul Band Guitar Group Senior Orchestra String Ensemble Steel Band Clarinet & Saxophone Ensemble
