2 The Composer Mike Kamu, holds Bachelor o Music degrees in oth azz erormance and Music Education rom the Dana School o Music at Youngston State niversity (Youngston, Ohio) and a Master o Arts degree in Instrumental Conducting rom George Mason niversity (airax, VA) Mike has studied ith Tony Leonardi, Sam D Angelo, Esotto elligrini, Susan Sexton, Anthony Maiello He presently has compositions pulished y the niversity o Northern Colorado azz ress, Alred ulications, the H Music Company and the Neil A Kos Music Company Mike s compositions and arrangements have een perormed y numerous azz artists and ensemles including the Woody Herman and Glenn Miller Orchestras, ames Moody, Eddie Daniels, Terell Staord, Bill Watrous and Nick Brignola to name a e Mike has perormed ith the Woody Herman and Tommy Dorsey Orchestras and has recorded as a memer o the Alan Baylock azz Orchestra He served as assistant principal trumpet o the Youngston Symphony Orchestra under Maestro David Eron rom 199092 Currently, Mike reelances as a commercial trumpet player in the Baltimore and Washington DC areas Mike has taught instrumental music or Montgomery County ulic Schools (MCS) since the all o 1992 He has een in his current teaching position since 1995 as the Director o Bands and Orchestras and Music Department Chairperson at ohn T Baker Middle School (Damascus, MD) nder his direction, the groups consistently receive high ratings at music estivals and have commissioned our orks or young concert ands In 2007, Mike received the Superintendent s Aove and Beyond the Call o Duty (ABCD) Aard or his eorts in involving students in the commissioning process He directed the MCS Senior Honors azz Band or six seasons and has served as a azz aculty memer at oth Youngston State niversity and Montgomery College (Rockville, MD) Mike has served as Treasurer and Secretary o the Maryland nit o the International Association o azz Educators (IAE) lease visit Mike s esite at: mikekamucom The Composition Too Soon To Go as commissioned y the Richard Montgomery High School azz Band, Rockville, Maryland, eter erry director, in memory o Charya, a guitarist in the RMHS azz Band I anted to honor this young man s lie and love or music ith a celeratory piece rather than an elegy The tune itsel ollos an ABAC ormat ith the chorale sections at the eginning and close o the piece utilizing the melodic and harmonic material o the C section The opening chorale section should e played as legato as possile ith care taken to alance the melody (trumpets), counter melody (alto and tenor saxes) and accompaniment (aritone sax and tromones) Here, the accompaniment instruments should e equal volume to create a lush oundation At measure 9, the drums set the tempo and change the mood o the piece A small group o Alto Sax1, and Vies (optional) present the A theme eginning in measure 1 The drums egin a crossstick groove reminiscent o Birdland at measure 1 The eel changes to a ossa nova ith a 2 clave pattern in the drums at measure 22 The eel changes ack to utilize the crossstick pattern in the drums again at measure 0 ith the ull ensemle oining in The groove changes ack to the ossa nova eel at measure 8 The open solo section at measure 50 has room or, guitar andor piano This solo section could also eature other horn players i you ish The previously mentioned changes in style rom the rhythm section should occur during the orm o this solo section Measure 87 egins a development section ith a piano igure hich ecomes the oundation or this section When the alto and tenor saxophones enter the second time at measure 95, these players should e careul to play the A concert as legato as possile and ith as little space as possile or the desired eect The development section leads to a rie saxophone unison soli hich leads into the peak point o the piece, the inal A section at measure 118 The ending choral at measure 11 egins ith ust Alto Sax 1 and piano and adds more inds as it progresses This chorale should e played in a similar style as the eginning o the piece You may note that, hile the piece ants to resolve to maor, the only maor chord is the inal chord I hope you enoy this piece, Mike Kamu Instrumentation List 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Trumpet 1 1 1 1 Tromone 1 1 1 1 1 1 Vies
