We have had record numbers in attendance this year and the recitalists have been superb! We have a large group of non-members who attend our summer recitals regularly. If you are sitting near some folks you don t know, speak to them and ask what their interest in the organ is. You may meet an architect who has designed buildings to house organs, an organ builder, or a church choir member who simply loves organ music. The money we collect during these recitals directly funds the Stigall Scholarship program for young people who wish to study the organ. Many thanks to everyone who has performed on the 2010 Summer Series. Now is the time to consider playing on the 2011 series. The deadline is November 1, 2010 and details will be included in the October newsletter. Our annual progressive dinner will be in Belmont and Gastonia this year. First Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, is providing free bus transportation from the circle driveway at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte for your convenience. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. as the bus departs from Covenant and heads to Gaston County for an evening of delightful conversation, delicious food, and a dazzling smorgasbord of organ music. The cost for dinner this year will be $12. Watch for reservation information in the September newsletter. Gay Pappin Have you visited any AGO websites lately? AGO 2010 Convention Review Submitted by Jane Cain Attending a national convention of the AGO is an amazing experience, a collage of sensations, and a potential for sensory overload. Imagine over 2000 organists in one place. Imagine trying to bus all those organists around a busy city. (Imagine walking between churches when it s 100 degrees.but I digress). Each morning we chose two out of four offerings of either recitals or worship services, at different churches. You could experience Jewish worship with a cantor and a small ensemble singing music by the Renaissance composer Salamone Rossi, followed by African-American Baptist worship with orchestra, large choir, soloist, dancer, and a complete variety of musical styles within the one service. Simultaneously offered were Catholic Morning Prayer and a children s worship service with a children s choir. The opening worship and opening evening concert were both at the National Cathedral, and the closing concert was at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Both are enormous spaces with excellent acoustics and organs, and included choirs as well as organ music. Many of the concerts and services included commissioned works; you hear an amazing amount of new music at a convention, and if it s not something you can use back home, who cares? On Tuesday night, the entire convention was bussed to the Naval Academy Chapel to hear David Higgs. For an encore, he played a theater organ setting of In a Persian Market which used all the fun percussion stops. He registered the Bach Passacaglia and Fugue with a different combination for each variation, which was just the right thing to do on that instrument. Two of the most memorable performers for me were Isabelle Demers, a young virtuoso from Montreal, and James David Christie, who played a program of early music on the small Schudi tracker in the crypt of the National Shrine. In the afternoons there are multitudes of workshops to choose from, everything from hymn playing to planning a concert series to performance practices in degrigny. I haven t even touched on the competitions for young organists and for improvisation, or the hymn festival, the carillon concert, the jazz and organ ensemble, the organ/harp recital, and the handbell prelude. And of course, there is the informal meeting of organists on bus rides or at the exhibit hall, sharing your stories and comparing notes. You run into old friends and make new ones. I came home glad that I m an organist.

Concert and Event Calendar July 30, 2010 7:30 PM Dorothy Papadakos, Edenton Street UMC, Raleigh, NC jdumbleton@esumc.org August 15, 2010 3:00 PM Monteverdi Vespers of 1610, St. Peter s Catholic Church, Columbia, SC ColumbiaConcerts@aol.com The deadline for submissions to the calendar is the 10th of each month. Send all calendar submissions to: newsletterinfo@charlotteago.org. Please check our chapter website for the most recent calendar additions and updates. www.charlotteago.org Composition Competition The steering committee of the 2011 Region V Convention invites composers to submit new, unpublished organ compositions suitable for use in church and synagogue services. Biblical Sketches is the theme, with 20 passages from the Bible from which to choose. These passages as well as detailed instructions may be found at www.2011lexingtonago.com. Winning compositions will be published in a collection based on the theme Biblical Sketches (subtitled The Lexington Organ Book) published by MorningStar Music. This competition is open to anyone of any age or nationality with a first prize of $1000. You may hear organ music at the movies this summer! Approximately 10 seconds of audio from Pro Organo CD 7084 - entitled The Symphonic Organ featuring William K. Trafka playing the concluding portion of César Franck s Grande Pièce Symphonique at St. Bartholomew s Church in New York City is used as background music in what promises to be one of 2010 s biggest Hollywood blockbusters. SALT, a contemporary action thriller starring Angelina Jolie, will be in theaters on July 23. Listen for Franck! Wouldn t you love to visit some beautiful French cathedrals? Experienced tour leaders Marylyn and Luther Wade are leading a trip to France entitled The Saga of Joan of Arc from October 12-21, 2010. In addition to visiting sites connected to the amazing story of Joan of Arc, the group will visit such places as Chartres Cathedral, Monet s Garden at Giverny, the final home of Leonardo da Vinci, and great châteaux such as Chenonceau. There are still a few slots available for anyone who would like to go but the deadline is quickly approaching. If you are interested, please contact the Wades as soon as possible at Lwade@carolina.rr.com or 704-567-1004. Exciting programs are being planned for 2010-2011. Stay tuned for further details September Progressive Dinner Friday, September 17 Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse, Cardinal Gibbons Chapel, Belmont, NC First Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, NC FREE shuttle service will leave Covenant Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC at 5:30 PM.
