1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In this chapter the writer would like to present the background of the study, the statement of the problem, the purpose of the study, scope and limitation, significance of the study and also the definition of the key terms. It is important to discuss, to make clear what actually the writer s background in conducting this research. 1.1 Background of the Study People use language as a medium to study literature, as we know literature is part of human creation, expression in experience, thought, feeling and idea. Literature has been our need when people study it, people acquire a pleasure and a resource that never lose, but some people believe that it is something abstract to learn and understand. According to Kennedy (1983:5) Literature is a kind of art, usually written, that offers pleasure and illumination. It means that literature can be connected with our life, because it describes the events and the things that can happen in our life, what human being has experienced in his life or it describes the reality. The point of literature can not be separated from social environment which relates literature itself and society as the appreciation of the literary problems. Since people have considered that literature never ends in topics of discussion, people have many aspects to discuss. Therefore, by studying literature and always to understand it, people will get or enrich new vision and new experience indirectly from the author s think. The result of in

2 this case, people will be more precious become a readers, in addition, in analyzing literature people are invited to think deeper and also be challenging the intelligence. In developing of main set of electronic, film and literature becomes a part of literary works and it is proved by the fact that study of film is suddenly an expended to become screen education, which includes the study of film itself, television and other variation that projected by mixed media. The film is chosen as the subject of the thesis for some reasons. First, film gives people real entertainment whether from the act, voice and includes a lot of talented artists or from the background of the story that is supported by audio visual effects that make the story looks amazing. Second, mysteries and dramatic conflict that stated in it usually lead viewers to think what should happen in the last. Third, film gives us interesting scenarios, such as life style, crime, state, beach, building and so on. The last, ever creative film writer will give them a different story that is always excited to see. Moreover, film is one of literary works. In relation to study the film with title My Name Is Khan is the greatest England and India work that has obtained the academy in 2010 hailed as landmark film that exceptional acting and story. Shah Rukh Khan started in this film as a man who got Asperger syndrome but had high IQ and smart although sometimes being emotional. In this case, he survived as a Muslim in San Francisco City, it is also a great literary work which describes a real life that ma happen in human s life. Considering the above background, a literary study with title A Study On Rizwan Khan s Survival as A Muslim In San Francisco City in Kahar Johar s film My Name is Khan has some lessons for the reader, especially about the survival,

3 because as we know the dominant of America religion are Christian or non Muslim. It means that this film offers the viewers to imagine the survival of one of the main characters to overcome his handicaps. This film is not only interested, but also useful to analyze, the writer only focuses on investigating the survival of a Muslim that has handicaps and solving of problems itself. 1.2 Statements of the Problem Concerning with the background of the study above, the statements of problem are formulated as follows: 1. What are Khan s survival as a Moslem in San Francisco City in Kahar Johar s film My Name is Khan? 2. What are Khan s handicaps to survive as a Moslem in San Francisco City in Kahar Johar s film My Name is Khan? 3. How does Khan overcome his handicaps to survive as a Moslem in San Francisco City in Kahar Johar s film My Name is Khan? 1.3 The Purposes of the Study Related to what has been stated in the problem of study, the main purposes of the study are: 1. To know Khan s survival as a Muslim in San Francisco City in Kahar Johar s film My Name Is Khan 2. To describe the handicaps of Khan to survive as a Moslem in San Francisco City in Kahar Johar s film My Name Is Khan

To dig out Khan s way in overcoming his handicaps to survive as a Moslem in San Francisco City in Kahar Johar s film My Name Is Khan 1.4 Scope and Limitation The scope of this study is on Khan s survival. While the limitation of this thesis only on the handicaps and the overcome of Khan as one of main characters in the film My Name Is Khan. 1.5 Significance of the Study From this study, firstly, it is hoped that the readers can take advantages in applying what have been learned about literature, knowing further about the element of film especially about the survival of Khan as a Muslim in San Francisco City on the story. Therefore, it shares to the readers that everyone may have a survival. It is hoped that this study can enrich the knowledge for the students or others who are interested in literature. Secondly, this research is hoped that it will be useful for the viewer in opening better awareness in watching film. It is also expected that the result of the study will be used of the consideration toward the film makers in placing a film as one of mass media power. Thirdly, it is hoped that this study will give great contribution to the moral lesson among people to make a good relationship towards others, especially to survival that we have to do to get our goal. The last, it is expected to make readers realize that by learning literature can help human to solve their problem in their daily life. For English Department students

5 who are interested in analyzing the literary works, especially in film, the result of this study can be used as a reference in doing the similar research. 1.6 The Definition of Key Terms The definition of key terms given in this study aims to avoid misconception used. The terms, which are necessary to be defined, are as follows: 1. Study is the activity of learning or gaining knowledge, especially from books (http://www.wordiq.com/definition/study) 2. Rizwan Khan is one of the main characters in My Name Is Khan film 3. Survival is living or continuing longer than, or beyond the existence of, another person, thing, or event; an outliving (Brainyquote,2001) 4. Muslim is a believer in or follower of Islam. My Name Is Khan is one of greatest films which is directed by Kahar Johar 6. Film is a form of entertainment that a story by a sequence of images that giving the illusion of continues movement.
