Summer Reading List Rising 4th Grade Studies suggest that children who read as few as six books over the summer maintain the level of reading skills they achieved during the preceding school year. Reading more books leads to even greater success. When children are provided with 10 to 20 self-selected children's books at the end of the regular school year, as many as 50 percent not only maintain their skills, but actually make reading gains. Choose books from the following list. Children should read for at least 20 minutes each day. Allow them to choose books that are of interest to them to encourage reading for pleasure. Read at least 3 of the following books this summer (in addition to lots of self-selected reading) & pass an Accelerated Reader test on those 3 books by August 24, 2018. Use the accompanied reading log to track your reading. After reading the books complete the one page book report on 2 books. On the Third book complete the Hanger Book Report. All Summer Reading Materials are required on the first day of school. Required Reading Choose at least 2 of the following books: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing Judy Blume Sideways Stories from Wayside School Louis Sachar The Homework Machine The Boys Start the War The One and Only Ivan Katherine Applegate Choose at least 1 more from the following: The Tale of Despereaux The Wild Robot Dragon Rider The Invention of Hugo Cabret Pip Bartlett s Guide to Magical Creatures Kate DiCamillo Peter Brown Cornelia Funke Brian Selznick Maggie Stiefvater and Jackson Pearson
