Soloist what clarity? Cocerto or Percussio Dave Hollide
Istrumetatio or Soloist: Sare Drum Tom Toms (see below or tuig) High-hat Tambourie with head Almglocke 2 Cowbells (large ad medium) 2 Temle Blocks (low ad high) 2 Wood Blocks (medium ad high) Bell Plates (arox. 10", 8", 4") 2 Brake Drums (large ad small) Metal Pie Tibeta Prayer Bowl Tibeta Prayer Cymbal (atique cymbal) Tuig: Tom Toms 1 2 4 5 Almglocke Sare Drum: Care should be take with the sare drum so that it does ot overower the orchestra, articularly the strig sectio at letters D ad E. For the remiere, the sare was tued to a A, ad calski heads ad cable sares were used or a darker soud. Bell Plates: The bell lates that I used i soudig out the iece were 10, 8 ad 4 iches square. Your istrumets should be close to these sizes so that the itches are i the correct rage. The smallest late should be itched sigiicatly higher tha the other two, more i the rage o the metal ie (a larger metal ie may be substituted or the smallest bell late). While soudig out the iece, I laid the bell lates lat o bubble wra. This resulted i a good toe with a slight amout o sustai. I additio, I oud that the itch droed a mior third whe the late was struck ear the edge as oosed to the ceter. This is take advatage o at letter H, where gradual movemets rom ceter to edge o the largest bell late are otated ad a chage i itch is exected. I you choose to sused the bell lates, dam them lightly ad take care that your method or susedig them does ot iterere with achievig a chage i itch whe they are struck ear the edge. Brake Drums: The brake drums I used or exerimetig were 10 ad 8 iches i diameter, measured across the to. The relative itches were a mior third aart, which is desirable i geeral but does ot have to be recise. Metal Pie: Ay heavy iece o ie or solid metal will do as log as it is resoat with a ice rig ad is itched higher tha the highest bell late. Almglocke: The almglocke should be damed airly heavily. The sustai should be short eough so that whe the almglocke is layed i articulate assages alog with istrumets with short sustai, such as at letter M, its sustai does ot cloud the assage work ad seems to it with the sustai o the other istrumets. Relative itches: The cowbells, temle blocks ad wood blocks should be chose so that there is a ascedig itch lie rom shar to b atural i the istrumet setu show below. Soloist Istrumet Setu ad Timbre Sta Notatio: 1 2 4 5 Physically arrage the istrumets as show above. The setu should resemble the black ad white keys o a iao. The music is the otated as or a keyboard istrumet. This otatio is reerred to as timbresta otatio. It is sigiied i the score by a treble cle with slashes through it. There is o corresodece betwee otated itch ad soudig itch, but betwee otated itch ad istrumet locatio. (For more details, see Michael Udow s Visual Corresodece Betwee Notatioal Systems ad Istrumet Coiguratios, Percussioist, vol. 18, o. 2 (Witer 1981) ublished by the Percussive Arts Society) Note: eharmoic equivalets aly. For examle, G shar ad A lat both reer to the higher o the two cowbells.
Soloist Stage Setu: The multiercussio setu may be curved i a arc to acilitate reachig wide itervals. The sare drum should be setu aart rom the rest o the istrumets. There should be a clear distictio, both visually ad dramatically, betwee erormig o solo sare drum ad erormig o the multiercussio setu. Perormace Notes or Soloist: 1. Mallet idicatios are suggestios. Please choose the best mallets to suit your istrumets ad the erormace coditios. 2. It may be desirable to create a air o sticks that ca be used iterchageably as wood sare sticks ad as rubber tied sticks, ossibly by diig the butt ed o the sare sticks i liquid rubber.. All lams are oed (tight); all roughs are as ast as ossible. 4. A vertical lie betwee two dyamic markigs (i. e., ) sigiies a abrut (subito) chage. 5. I geeral, meas to strike a istrumet i the ceter or ordiary layig sot, meas to lay ear the edge o the istrumet, ad meas a gradual chage rom oe layig area to the other. For the almglocke, reers to the ode o the istrumet.. The ollowig otatio is used or the Sare Drum: ordiary lay o rim strike sticks together 7. The ollowig otatio is used or the High-Hat: lay ear edge gradual chages i lay ig sot ordiary to edge edge to ordiary oe hal oe closed strike cymbals with stick gradual chage close cymbals with oot (o stick) I would like to thak Adrew Secer or techical ad musical hel. I give secial thaks to Audra Wezlow or moral ad creative suort.
