A Special Animal 15 What does the picture show about dugongs? A very interesting animal lives in the waters of the Arabian Gulf and other tropical waters. This animal is called the dugong. The dugong is gentle and eats seagrass at the bottom of the sea in areas along the coast. Some people call the dugong a sea cow. These large animals are grey or brown in colour and live in the ocean, although they do come up to the surface to breathe air. Baby dugongs swim near their mothers. Many people enjoy watching these beautiful animals swim in the ocean. The Arabian Gulf is home to a large group of dugongs. However, because the animals move slowly and swim in waters near the coast, they are in danger from human activities. Due to this danger and to their special place in the history of the Arabian Gulf, the UAE is working to protect these interesting animals. 13 What is another name for a dugong?
