Jane Cain, AAGO, Charlotte Chapter Dean E-mail: jcain@dcpc.org Office: (704) 892-5641 A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Ta-da! Your board is proud to announce that for the first time, we have a new logo, distinctive for the Charlotte Chapter. It is inaugurated with this issue of the newsletter, and will be the heading of our website, and appear on all chapter programs. You will notice immediately what ties it to Charlotte; that is, the Queen City s distinctive crown. This project has been in the works for many months, as the board looked at different design options and made suggestions to the designer. Michael Lehtinen served as the liaison with designer Ceil Tart. The logo will help make us easily identifiable and raise the profile of the chapter. The Peek weekend was a big success. Three students played in the masterclass and responded so well to Jonathan Ryan s insightful teaching. He had a way of engaging the students to really think about why and how they would shape a phrase or create rhythmic momentum. Students were asked to try a new concept several times, each time with Jonathan saying, Do it more, until you think it is too much. it was surprising how hard it was for them to go too far, which shows that we really need to listen to ourselves and to try things many different ways. Of course, his concert was magnificent. Thanks to Rob Dicks of Covenant Presbyterian for coordinating and hosting this annual highlight of our program year. Be sure and return your ballot for chapter officers as soon as you receive it in the mail, and don t forget to put our May installation dinner and service on your calendar for May 13. Have a blessed Lent and a joyous Easter, Jane

Member Recommendation: Music for Holy Week and Easter Miserere mei Deus By John Wall Calcott This selection hails from Calcott s First Collection of Catches, Glees, Canons, Etc. that is currently housed in the British Library. A pupil of Haydn, John Wall Calcott was known throughout England in the early 19 th Century as a composers of canons and other catchy melodies. Miserere mei Deus is a double mirror canon. It is sung a cappella, but its brevity makes it accessible for inexperienced choirs. The music is appropriate for Holy Week and especially for Good Friday. Available free on cpdl. Difficulty Level: Easy Alleluia! Christ is Risen By Bruce Neswick As a setting of Psalm 118:14-16 and Psalm 150:3-6, this choral anthem is scored for organ, four-part choir, brass and timpani. It begins with a long crescendo of instruments to a festive Alleluia that appropriately celebrates Easter Sunday. A central 7/8 section portrays a buoyant dance feel in a wonderful swing rhythm. The piece is typical of Neswick s gift for energy and harmonic ingenuity. Published by Paraclete Press. Costs: $3.60/copy Difficulty Level: Medium/Difficult A Recreation of a Traditional Latin Mass at Saint- Sulpice Sunday of the Resurrection Performed by Daniel Roth, Eric Lebrun, Choeur Gregorien De Paris & Choeur D'oratorio De Paris Improvisations by Daniel Roth on traditional chants for Easter Sunday alternate with performances of Vierne s Messe Solennelle, Op. 16. The listener feels transported to the wonderful acoustics of Saint Sulpice and surrounded by the beautiful sound of the choir and the Cavaille-Coll organ. Highly Recommended. Available on Amazon Music. Costs: $18.98 or $.99/track
