About the Los Angeles Jazz Institute The Los Angeles Jazz Institute houses and maintains one of the largest jazz archives in the world. All styles and eras are represented with a special emphasis on the preservation and documentation of jazz in southern California. Many artists personal collections are being preserved at the Institute including the archives of Howard Rumsey, Bud Shank, Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Bob Cooper, June Christy, Pete Rugolo, Johnny Richards, Ken Hanna, Dr.Wesley LaViolette, Jimmie Baker and Sleepy Stein. Featured Artists The Jazz Institute actively uses the materials in the archive by maintaining a busy schedule of outreach activities including concerts, festivals, broadcasts, publications and the release of important recordings on compact disc. The Institute is housed at California State University Long Beach on the third floor of the University Library. The Institute is used by teachers, scholars, students, musicians, independent researchers, the media and the industry. The Los Angeles Jazz Institute is pleased to announce Springsville Celebrating the Birth of the Cool and Beyond taking place May 27-30, 2004 at The Four Points Sheraton-LAX in Los Angeles. Beginning in the mid 1930 s Lester Young introduced a unique approach to jazz improvisation which would later influence a whole new generation of writers and instrumentalists. The effects of this influence started coming to the forefront by the late 1940 s in the bands of Claude Thornhill, Lennie Tristano and Woody Herman. Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and Lee Konitz all were major contributors to the unique sound of the Thornhill Orchestra which in turn led to the classic Miles Davis recordings that we now think of as The Birth of the Cool. Lennie Tristano along with his students and associates including Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh and Billy Bauer were also beginning to be noticed for their innovative new approach. Through the years, Tristano, Konitz, Bauer and Marsh have influenced countless musicians who have continued the Tristano legacy. At the end of 1947 Woody Herman debuted his new band which featured an entire saxophone section heavily influenced by the sound of Lester Young. Shorty Rogers was one of Herman s primary arrangers at that time and he successfully combined the cool Lestorian Four Brothers sound with harmonic innovations of Charlie Parker. By 1952 both Gerry Mulligan and Shorty Rogers had settled in Los Angeles and their musical explorations launched the West Coast Jazz explosion. Springsville brings together many of the jazz legends that were directly associated with these exciting developments. In addition to 15 concerts, there will also be film showings, panel discussions and special presentations where the story of the Birth of the Cool and Beyond will be told by the artists who created it. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to see and hear this amazing gathering of musicians and I hope you will be able to join us. Sincerely, Ken Poston Director Los Angeles Jazz Institute
