September 2006 FRIENDS OF HE Baldwin City Library HE EVOLVING BOOKSHELVES A HE LIBRARY n 2005 the Baldwin City Library added 1,566 new books I and 144 audio items to its shelves. his process requires the efforts of the entire staff and help from the visiting public. Librarian Kathy Johnston said many sources are used when selecting new titles. he first, and most heavily used, is the magazine Booklist, published by the American Library Association. his periodical contains reviews for nearly 4,000 new books for adults, 2,500 titles for children, 500 reference books and electronic reference tools, and 1,000 other audiovisual materials. he staff members read it and mark titles they would recommend to purchase. We each have our own areas that we look for, said Johnston, and everyone makes notes on an issue indicating which books they would suggest be purchased. Other sources include a monthly magazine Forecast from publications supply house Baker and aylor and countless publishing house catalogs. Johnston said that there are also sales representatives for children books and large print publications from whom the library staff purchases items. he library staff notes book reviews in newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Plus there are the visitors to the library who have ideas about new books they would like to see. If a library patron wants to suggest a book they think the library should buy, they need to tell someone at the circulation desk, Johnston said. She said some suggestions have proven to be too specific within a certain area. he staff tries to fill that need by ordering the book for the patron to borrow through an interlibrary loan system. But if the book suggested is of general interest to the public, and especially if more than one person suggests the title, the book goes onto the purchase list. Unfortunately, due to limited space, these new purchases result in older volumes being pulled off the bookshelf and out of circulation. Johnston said, We have to weed out almost as many as we buy because we don t have the shelf space. Cynthia Beall BRING HOME AUUMN COLORS FROM HE FRIENDS ANNUAL MUM SALE! he Friends of the Library will hold their annual Mum Sale on Friday, September 22, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, September 23, from 8 a.m. to Noon. he sale will be on the front lawn of the library at Seventh and High Streets (800 Seventh Street). You can purchase these bright, hardy chrysanthemums for $5 each or buy nine and get the 10 th for free. Shop early for the best selection. Put a few pots on your front porch and add some brilliant fall color to your landscaping before Maple Leaf. HISORICAL NOES Richard Wellman, historical volunteer he opportunity for historical research continues at the library, though we miss the 96 years of experience that Miss Katharine brought with her. he wonderful additions of the microfilm printer and map-storage cabinet were purchased in her memory. Kansas census records of Douglas Co. are available at the library, on microfilm for the years 1875, 1885, 1895 and 1905. Federal census records are also available on microfilm, but with a Kansas Library Card, available through the Baldwin library, the Federal census records can also be searched and viewed on line via the Internet. If you'd like some personal assistance with searching census records, use the E-mail address below or just let the librarians know and I will get back to you. he library is more a repository of information than a museum of historical artifacts. However, we do have some original documents, maps, etc. We prefer to have unique items copied so that the information would not be lost if the item was destroyed through usage. One item that often helps with research in determining when a family lived in Baldwin is the phone book collection that resides in the library. We are missing several years that would be wonderful additions if you know of any copies in existence. A copy could be made and the original returned to you if desired. We need: 1955, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1990, anything before 1951 (with exception of 1945 & 1938, which we have), and the recent ones for 2001, 2002, & 2003. (his position was previously vacant.) Recently retired, she brings unique skills as former librarian at Perry-Lecompton high school, and former president of Business and Professional Women in Kansas, where she continues as a board member. Additionally, Barbara is current president of Baldwin City Business and Professional Women. We value her professional library experience and continuing community service, and are grateful she is willing to serve. New Member of the Board John English is a new member of the Friends board. He will focus on long-term development strategies and special projects. Now retired, he was Professor of History at Baker University. John, in period costume, portrayed John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, at an Ives Chapel event at the Midland Railway. We value his sense of history and welcome his interest and involvement. Summer Reading Program he Friends provided silicone rubber gel bracelets to children who completed the program. Smaller bracelets were debossed with the word "Read" in eight different languages. Larger bracelets were debossed with the slogan "Free to Read." A total of 251 children completed the program. Friends' Book Bags Friends' book bags have been popular among our new and renewing members. Generously sized, with zipper closure, they are given in appreciation to all who join or renew their membership at the $25 level. hese bags are on display at the library.
