Think Like A Leader LEADERSHIP LESSON 11

This VBS, kids are going to be taking God s love on tour! They will be learning how to be true stars and shine God s light! But most importantly, they will be learning about the biggest star of all time: Jesus! He shined God s light and totally changed how we see the world, how we love others, and how we interact with God. He was the first Rock Star! Now, ignoring some less worldly aspects of rock stars, Jesus fits the mold pretty well. He had his roadies (his loyal followers and disciples). He had crowds follow Him everywhere he went. He had people wait hours to hear Him. He stood up against the most powerful religious rulers of the day and said they were faking their devotion to God. He broke the mold, changed peoples lives with his message and miracles, and even ate with tax collectors and prostitutes. And then, he broke the rules with one final act of daring: he died to win. He died for a chance to save us, sinners without a chance. The veil tore between God and humans forever. Some of the Pharisees had finally got their wish; even Jesus, the rock star, had to obey the law of gravity...but only for a little while. His last big reunion concert had an audience of 500 of his most devoted fans! So yes, Jesus was a star! But he also knew that every one of His children could shine that same light: that once connected to God through Him, they could choose to shine or hide. And the main way we as Christians shine is through worship and service. At the Main Stage, children will experience dynamic, active worship songs and encounter the Daily Bible Point with engaging object lessons. They will also watch and learn from the Wired180 worship band as they discover that being on tour as a band isn t just about making music: it s about making a difference! Main stage Opens and Closes the VBS day as the ultimate pep rally for children to continue to Shine On in their communities and the world!

So what does the Main Stage experience feel like? In one word: BIG. We worship a big God, who can change the world through us if we trust Him. That is worth our energy and our songs: that is worth our worship. It is so much bigger than VBS; something bigger than ourselves. They can feel the scope of Jesus love changing the world if you give it that perspective. Never downplay the power of children s worship. Evil trembles when God s children sing truth. With every word and every song, give it all you have. This is the biggest concert some of them will ever experience! has two awesome options for drama: Live Skits or 1 actor to intro DVD skits. The Live Skits are modified because there are flashbacks and montage sequences in the DVD skits. You can take a video camera and actually film your own sequences with your actors using the instructions provided. This will make your VBS drama experience incredible; live drama with a bit of video thrown in! With the DVD skits, Rick the Rocker will be your Rock Star wannabe who learns how to be a better Star by watching the Wired180 band s video-blog. Each day, you will see a list of the songs you will be singing at Main Stage: There will be 2 lists: 1 for Main Stage Opening, and 1 for Main Stage Closing. The Songs are listed in your script, but this will be helpful if you just need to remember with a quick glance! Every day, you will have a prep list: supplies that you need and also any preparation steps that you may need to take before your children enter. You don t want to be scrambling to get supplies as kids enter. Some of these supplies, like the Daily Bible Point poster, are just suggestions. You will need other supplies for Shine On lessons! Every time you say the Daily Bible point, your kids will shout out Shine On! You will intro the Bible Point and Bible story every day, and you will encourage their excitement about the Bible Point. You will also introduce the Bible Verse! You have two options. One, a weeklong verse: Matt 5:16. Two, daily verses from 1 John! The 1 John verses can also be challenge verses if choosing Matt 5:16. This is a group activity during closing worship at Main Stage. This will be a great object lesson to help children remember what they learned in a creative, relevant way. It will include some volunteers or the entire group of all the bands.

Every Day you will have a script. This is to help you communicate the Daily Bible Point and Intro to worship songs with clarity, excitement, and relevance to your kids! We want to make sure that you have the right words to help children experience worship. We also want to help you show them how they can live every day for God by changing the world with His love! Try to stick to the script, but don t stare at it while communicating with children. Memorize what you can, and then make notes on the script, or write an outline of the things you really want to emphasize. As a part of your costume, you can have a head set or a walkie-talkie, a clipboard, and a pencil. You are introducing yourself as the Main Stage Manager- because they are the Stars! You can check your clipboard every once in a while, so you can have your script or an outline right at your finger-tips as a part of the atmosphere! The suggested music that comes with is on the Hillsong Kids Tell the World Album. This music was produced completely by Hillsong Kids, but it fits in perfectly with the Daily Bible Points and lessons you will be sharing! These great resources can be used all year round and for long after VBS is over! There are two resources you may have ordered; one, the CD and two, the CD and DVD. The CD contains all the songs while the DVD includes some lyric videos, live worship with subtitles and motions, and motion tutorials. If you would like to, you can use the Live Worship with subtitles as a music video to lead worship, but we recommend you use the DVD for training and getting your team excited about learning the motions. If you don t have the DVD, don t worry! There are a lot of motions videos on youtube. And you will love our great Power Point Slides. Check with your praise team leader or music director to make sure you have CCLI license to show lyrics of worship songs!

The suggested 10 songs: Tell the World My Number One Light of the World My Redeemer Lives You re the Answer I Want the World to Know Lean on You I m Not Ashamed Power in Your Name Yours Alone Ask yourself a question; would a concert be more exciting if there was one person up on stage doing motions, or 5 people? Get as many youth as you can to learn the motions to the songs and lead in worship! Especially if you are using Power Points, it helps children connect with people instead of a screen! It will help visiting kids feel less self-conscious. After all, if the cool teens are doing it, it must be cool! And don t be worried about your youth being able to learn the motions. Be their supportive, but not overbearing coach. Lend them the DVD or direct them to the member page, and set up group practices! Here are some quick tips about recruiting and training youth for dance and drama. #1, respect their gifts. Their gifts are just as powerful, because they were given by God to help lead kids in worship. #2, challenge their devotion and effort. If you have had a bad experience working with youth, the root problem was not their abilities. Youth find it hard to persevere and get the job done if the goals and ideals aren t blatantly obvious. When they can, youth can really shine! And it s refreshing to remind yourself why you are doing all this preparation too! Between practicing songs, remind them visiting kids will connect with Jesus during this song if the youth are confident and know their motions. If practicing drama, remind them how that line is relevant to the big picture. Help them realize what they will inspire children to do! You can always partner with a youth leader to help you keep them motivated during practices!

If using the DVD skits, your skits will be introduced by Rick the Rocker. Rick (or if you cannot find a male actor, Rachel) is a Rock Star wannabe! (You can always modify to have Rick and Rachel; just split up some lines! Rachel and/or Rick can have crazy clothes and a guitar (even a rocker wig)! They start the day off with a misunderstanding about being a Rock Star, and then learn how we can be like Jesus and truly Rock the World by watching the Wired180 worship band s video blog! All you have to do is recruit one or two adults or youth and follow the script as written in the guide! If you are going to use Live Drama, the first thing you need to do is recruit. The best way to do this is by asking youth you know, talking to your youth director or volunteers, and directing your potential recruits to watch the Day 1 preview skit on our youtube channel. This will also help them get an idea of the different characters. The next thing you will need to do is try to recruit a videographer for the montage sequences that your actors and actresses will film weeks before the VBS. This person will also edit these sequences and have them ready for each day of VBS. If this sounds just way too complicated, FIRST: try to find one. The truth is what might sound complicated to you might be extraordinarily easy for someone who likes to take and edit video. If you cannot find someone, and it seems like it s not going to work, edit the sequences out of the script or even consider the DVD skits. You can edit any part of the script. Also, know that this Guide is written for use of DVD skits, but you will see a large Star where the Live Skit should begin! The Band The Newest Recruit: The Video Artist: Bass: Richard The Camera Shy Manager: Laura Emily Kaleb Along with Laura, he Guitarist: Mike She knows that Emily, the new lead This is Emily s bro, is enthusiastic about This is another great living out worship is singer for the band, kind of along for the helping people and role with not a lot of essential! 7 You ll need: Two Flashlights (medium or large) Batteries for said flashlights (just in case!) 2 Cans of Food 2 clean new shirts (adult size) A Microphone (or fake one) An Air guitar The Bible Point for today is Love Like You Mean It. Every time children hear you say this, they should shout Shine On! Since this is the first day, make sure you have fun with it, and try to say it as much as possible! Opening: Tell the World My Number One I m Not Ashamed Light of the World (Tell the World when kids dismiss) Closing: Light of the World I Want the World to Know You re the Answer Yours Alone Tell the World (Welcome each child as they enter with high fives; go up to bands as they start to filter in. If using the pre-show Power Point slides, make sure you are encouraging children to answer questions and to try to get to know each other and start to think of their bands name.) Get ready to pump up the volume to drive the Daily Bible Point home! It s an exciting new game show What Has Love Got to do with It. You will have questions to ask the children, like situations where they can choose to shine or hide God s light. You are going to ask 2 kids to come on up front. They will each have a flashlight (love is how we shine God s light!) and when it s their turn, they will turn it on and answer the question. You will also host a lighting fast round where whoever flashes the light on the fastest gets to answer! You can also modify this to make it be two bands with one person holding the flashlight! The audience can join in by shouting the answer they think is correct!

Hey, rockers, and welcome to the Main Stage for the Vacation Bible School Rock the World Tour! And the best part about this Tour is that we aren t the Logo stars: you are! Because this week, we are going to Slide learn that a true Rock Star shines God s light all the time, everywhere they go! We get to shine, and rock out, while we change the world! Now, you might be thinking, There s no way I can change the World- I m just a kid, and I m not sure if I m ready to go on stage. But we are going to help you on your first tour, and you are going to do more than make music this VBS; you are going to make a difference! Because we are going to learn about the greatest Star of all time: Jesus! And we are going to tell the World that He loves us by changing the world! So, let s Shine on and sing, Tell the World! (Intro Chorus motions!) Sing Tell the World Song Slide I LOVE that song! It s all about how we can Tell the Logo World who Jesus is and that He died to save us, so Slide we could be free and we could choose to change the world like He did! You see, 2,000 years ago, Jesus came down from heaven. God s son was actually born (we ll get to that later). Then, Jesus started an own little band of special followers called Disciples. These 12 guys were with Jesus all of the time, eating with Him, hanging with Him, listening to His way to live 24/7- they were kind of like His band! They got to change the world, too! Jesus rose people from the dead, healed people, fed people- and He had a lot of fans that followed him all around! He was the most important thing to them, just like Jesus being an awesome Rock star should make Him #1!
