BREAKOUT SESSIONS [SESSION 1] Lighting Basics & Lighting for Worship - Frank Shabell In this session, Frank will cover some of the fundamentals on lighting during a worship experience and will speak on the heart of lighting for worship. Frank Schabell is a Lighting Designer and Technical Director from Rockford, Illinois. His years of on-the-job experience, positive attitude, and strong work ethic make him highly efficient and in-demand for many types of productions. He is proficient in the Jands Vista and ETC lighting systems, as well as multiple types of portable lighting systems. His work has been featured on The Brightness Blog and The Anderson List and has designed shows for major conferences, weekly megachurch services, local theater productions, and countless weddings and other special events. Acoustic Guitar David Flemming How does an acoustic guitar fit into a worship band? Can people even hear my acoustic guitar? Are acoustic guitars on the way out in this age of electronically influenced worship music? If you play the acoustic guitar and have found yourself asking these questions this class may be for you. David Fleming is the worship pastor at The Chapel s Barrington campus. He graduated from the International House of Prayer University s Forerunner Music Academy and has been leading worship for 15 years. He loves people, food, music, and games (most times in that order). He and his wife, Taryn, live in Gages Lake, IL with their son, Henry. Worship Vocalists* Holly Watson (*this breakout also available during Session 3) This session will focus on contemporary vocal technique, including exercises to help strengthen vocal range and promote vocal health. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Holly's passion for singing started at a young age in her home church, Hillsong. She began leading worship at 16 years of age. She has been a lead vocalist on many Hillsong United albums, and toured with them around the world. Wanting to further expand her musicianship and vocal performance skills, Holly studied contemporary voice performance for two years at the Contemporary Music Centre in Sydney. Holly is a voice coach,
teaching singers of all ages and experience. With extensive live recording and touring experience, Holly understands the importance of vocal health. She loves to work with worship vocalists, to help them develop their gifts and see them grow in confidence. Holly and her husband Aaron moved to Texas in They have been married more than 10 years and are having a blast raising little Beau Daniel, who is 2 years old. Leading The Band - Aaron Watson We will cover what it means to be a great band member as well as how to lead a team of musicians in service and rehearsal. We'll also look at some tools to improve the sound of your team. How to use Ableton, pad loops & apps in a worship setting. ProPresenter - Brandon Downs ProPresenter is a great tool to use during worship services. In this session, we will start from the basics of ProPresenter 6, and work our way all the way up to the more complicated features. Brandon grew up in church wanting our experience to be better than anywhere else you go. Now, it s his job to try to make that happen every weekend at The Chapel! He loves using audio, video, and lighting to create a space to impact peoples lives!
BREAKOUT SESSIONS [SESSION 2] Bridging the Gap Between the Sound Booth & the Stage - Caleb Loeppky There s not only a physical distance between the booth and the stage, but there can be an emotional and spiritual distance between band members and production crew. This session will help give some constructive ideas on how to close the gap by purposefully building relationships with people on both teams. Caleb Loeppky is the Production Director at The Chapel. He oversees all audio, and lighting across all of The Chapel s campuses, and has been working in a live production environment for 8 years. Electric Guitar - Nate Bjorge The electric guitar session will explore the differences between lead and rhythm electric, techniques and skills that can enhance a worship set. We'll also discuss equipment that is commonly used and how it doesn't need to be overcomplicated. Lastly, the role of electric guitar and how to better practice and prepare. Nate is the worship director at the Wheaton campus of The Compass Church. In addition to leading and music directing in various church settings over the year, he has developed advance level skills in electric guitar and how it fits into a worship arts setting. Using Clicks and MultiTracks in Worship - Loop Community guys Come join us as we show you the ins and outs of using stems and loops in worship. We'll cover the introduction to music software such as Ableton Live and PRIME for ipad and iphone, as well as using hardware such as keyboards and foot controllers in worship. If you've ever wanted to enhance the overall sound and presence of your worship team and band, this is the place to start!
Excellence in the Art of Rhythm - Sam Miranda What is excellence in the worship setting? God calls us all to worship, so why does the quality matter? Can excellence be executed at all skill levels and should it be expected accordingly? Colossians 3:23-24 ESV Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. When Sam was 8 he would sit in his parents kitchen hitting pots and pans or even couch cushions and 5 gallon buckets. His parents bought him a drum set a couple years later and a couple years after that he was up playing with the worship team in the Big House, as his youth pastor used to call it. 18 Years, 1 patient wife and 3 kids later, he has been blessed to continue worshiping through the art of music. Planning A Worship Experience - Trent Cowart Planning a worship experience requires attention to the spiritual, logistical, and practical. We will take some time to explore these areas and ways to keep them in tension, and balanced. Trent Cowart spends most of his spare time trying to figure how his Tivo works. He is a worship leader, pastor, husband and father. He has been on staff with the Chapel for over 12 years and has led worship, worship teams, and creative planning for services, conferences, and many other events. Intro to Planning Center - Thad Burkhalter Come join us as we go over the ins and outs of Planning Center Online! Planning Center Online is a great tool and resource for worship teams. In this session we will cover the basics of using Planning Center to plan services, schedule volunteers, add songs, edit arrangements, and much more. Thad is the worship pastor at The Chapel Mundelein. He enjoys helping people discover and develop their God-given talents. He is married to his amazing wife, Christin, and has a dog named Memphis.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS [SESSION 3] The Role of the Keys Player - Aaron Watson We will cover the responsibility of the keyboard player and how to complement the worship team. We will also look at some software and sound design main stage and instrument plugins. There will something for every skill level! Aaron taught himself how to play piano and sing and joined his youth group worship team as a teen. After High School, Aaron moved to Sydney Australia and studied Worship at Hillsong College for 3 years. He then studied at the International Conservatorium of Music in Sydney to receive his degree in Music. After college, Aaron taught at Hillsong College for 5 years, teaching classes on worship, music theory and church leadership. Aaron now resides in Texas and is passionate about developing people, leveraging technology in music and helping worship teams lead people into the presence of God. Worship Vocalists* Holly Watson (*this breakout also available during Session 1) This session will focus on contemporary vocal technique, including exercises to help strengthen vocal range and promote vocal health. We will workshop a song or two so come ready to sing! You learn how to be a better singer but also, and most importantly, how to be a worshipper and serve in your team. Holly and her husband Aaron moved to Texas in They have been married more than 10 years and are having a blast raising little Beau Daniel, who is 2 years old.
Audio and Music Recording James Derse Recording is an incredibly useful skill where one never stops learning the infinite intricacies and methods of capturing and editing audio! In this session we will go over the physics of sound, tools of the trade, methods for recording music, and the basics of EQ and compression with lots of room for Q&A! James Derse is a worship leader, guitar player, song writer, and self taught audio engineer. James worked briefly in a professional recording studio before being called to ministry and pursued a Bachelors degree in Biblical studies with an emphasis on worship. Since then, he has seen how his passions and gifts in music and recording can be used within a ministry context to progress the Kingdom of God. He continues to invest in his home studio and developing his musical skills while pursuing a career in worship ministry. Following the Lord s Lead in Worship - David Flemming & Aaron Herman If you re interested in hearing more about learning to listen for and follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in the midst of times of worship, you ll enjoy this class. We ll talk about the balance of structure and spontaneity, the value of singing old songs and a new song, and learning to catch the wind of the Spirit. Bass Foundations for Worship - Rich Pattison Bassists are the foundation of any worship band. Teaming with the drummer, they provide the groundwork for the rest of the band to build on. Using rhythm, tone, touch, space and melodic elements, the bassist can weave a musical fabric that allows worshippers to soar. Spend time with your fellow bassists and learn more about getting prepped, strapping on and creating bass lines that any worship band can build on. BYOB (Bring-your-own-bass) to explore, practice and share ideas. Rich Pattison has played bass in worship bands for over 30 years. Coming from a musical family (Dad played piano and tenor sax, Mom played cello), he started on clarinet but gravitated to the lower registers with bass clarinet, tuba, upright and electric bass. He gave his life to Jesus Christ when he was 19 and dedicated his music to God. His bass influences are James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorious, Charles Mingus, Jack Casady, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, Chris Squire and Abraham Laboriel.
