English Department-Grade 9 Ninth-Grade English Highlights, you will read works of fiction, non-fiction and drama such as Romeo and Juliet, Night, and Twelve Angry Men. complete projects such as your memoir expressed through poetry. build research and writing skills through the Career Research Project. 3
English Department-Grade 9 9 th -grade Learning Goals learn and apply the Active Reading Strategies to improve my reading comprehension. employ effective note-taking skills. cite, paraphrase and quote information from a range of researched sources. identify and write about a range of literary techniques and elements (i.e. Plot, Characterization, Conflict and Theme) in literature. write a detailed analysis establishing connections between two literary passages. critically analyze works of literature. write grammatically correct complex sentences, with attention to mechanics, such as punctuation and capitalization, and verb tense agreement. 4

English Department-Grade 10 10 th -grade Learning Goals read and understand increasingly complex literary and informational texts. read and write about the development and impact of literary elements and techniques, such as characterization, setting, theme, and figurative language from a wide variety of genres (myths, poems, epic poems, novels, plays, documents, movies). use effective note-taking strategies in connection with listening passages, research and classwork. locate reliable informational sources to write a research project a historical time period in connection with a literary work. make connections between other cultures and time periods and my own through reading, writing and visual art. improve my written grammar by identifying and correcting run-on sentences, comma splices and sentence fragments commonly misused words, verb tense, and prepositions.. 6
English Department-Grade 11 In Eleventh -Grade English Highlights, you will read works of American Literature like The Crucible and British Literature like Macbeth. complete projects like a study of life in Elizabethan England and literary criticism. take your English Regents and prepare for your SATs. 7
English Department-Grade 11 11 th -grade Learning Goals read, analyze, and understand American and British literature and informational texts. make connections between literature from various time periods and contemporary society. Take notes and comprehend information based on extended listening passages. establish a controlling idea, and write an analysis on the use of a variety of literary elements/techniques based on two literary reading passages. write essays that analyzes two works of literature based on a critical lens. begin preparation for applying to college. read and apply literary criticism (i.e. psychological, political, historical ) to poetry. gain familiarity with and practice for the Verbal/Writing SAT. 8
English Department-Grade 12 Twelfth -Grade English Highlights, you will chose an Elective of interest like a course on Playwriting and Acting, Film Studies or Shakespeare. Through these electives you may attend Broadway shows, write a memoir or play, produce your senior yearbook prepare a college essay and work on your applications Produce extended writing such as essays and research projects 9
English Department-Grade 12 12 th -grade Learning Goals will vary by elective, but may include review written grammar concepts to write error-free Standard Written English practice for the Verbal/Writing components of the SAT. complete multiple drafts to complete a carefully edited college essay. analyze and write about literature through critical analysis analyze and write about a work of literature, making connections between the literature and myself. identify a variety of literary elements and evaluate their effectiveness. complete a comprehensive research paper using MLA documentation format devise and present a creative project in response to literature or other media that connects to my personal experience. 10
