There are many factors that affect the relationship between a reader and text, including content, age-appropriateness, reader interests, suitability of the text, and text difficulty. The measure of a book a measure of text difficulty is a good starting point in the book-selection process, with other factors then being considered. The measure should never be the only factor considered when selecting a book. Parents, please help your child choose appropriate reading this summer. Elementary & Middle School Assignments All students will read 3 books. Students should select books that are within their range. Students entering First and Second Grade this fall should read 3 books that are on the Suggested Reading List or other books designated for Beginning Readers. The official website is an amazing resource for finding appropriate summer reading material (for free!). To use this resource go to www.lexile.com and follow these steps. 1. At the top or the web page, click on Find a Book Students entering Third Grade through Eighth Grade this fall should read 3 books that fall within their range, from 100 points below to 50 points above their score. The score is found on the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) report, which was sent home to parents. Students are strongly encouraged to read at least one piece of informational (non-fiction) text over the summer. The Common Core Standards recently adopted by Georgia place a much stronger emphasis on informational text as it is more present in college and career reading. Summer Reading for kindergarten students is recommended, but not required. No grades will be given to kindergarten students. ***Students are encouraged to find books that interest them. ***Parents are encouraged to read aloud to their children. Assignment: All students will keep a Reading Log of time spent reading 3 books and have the log signed by a parent. The reading log will count as two homework grades. Type in your child s score in the appropriate box. The Range will automatically be calculated. Click Submit. 3. Next, you will be able to check various categories about which your child may wish to read. When finished, click Submit. 4. Now you will be presented with a list of books that are in your child s areas of interest and within his or her range. Clicking the WorldCat button next to each book will allow you to see if that book is available in the Live Oak Public Libraries. If the library does carry that book, you can request a hold online.
