GENERAL CONDITIONS 1. Competitors must be current (paid up) students of the Conservatory during the term in which they enter for competitions. 2. The attention of competitors is drawn to the specific entry requirements for each individual competition. There are minimum entry requirements for the following competitions: Piano - Lorcan Sherlock Gold Medal, Senior Recital and Junior Repertoire competitions. Organ - Senior Recital and Actors Church Union competitions. 3. Programmes must be submitted on the appropriate competition entry form. There may not be any overlapping of programmes i.e. no part of any programme presented may be used in another competition in the same session. NOTE: This last rule does not apply to the Moulton Mayer Trophy which is controlled by conditions agreed with the Royal Irish Academy of Music or to the Briscoe Cup, where a performance of a concerto movement may be repeated in the Heneghan Cup, or vice versa. 4. Competition prizes may not be won more than once by the same soloist or group. 5. Age limits apply to the student s age on 1st January 2017. It is the applicant s responsibility to ensure that s/he is entered into the correct age-group. 6. The acceptance of an entry fee may not be taken as proof of the validity of the entry. Entries must comply with above general conditions and with current Conservatory regulations. 7. Students may not enter into both Junior and Senior Competitions in any given year 8. Competitors should note that many of the competitions may be held before an audience. 9. Teachers reserve the right to withdraw a candidate from a competition at any stage. In this case, a refund of fee is not possible 10. The adjudicator s decision is final. 2

LORCAN SHERLOCK GOLD MEDAL 1 st Prize: Gold Medal Minimum entry standard for part-time students: Advanced level 2- merit DIT Whole-time music students are automatically eligible. A recital programme of own choice of 35-45 minutes duration equivalent in standard to diploma programmes (performance) such as LTCL, LRSM, LRIAM, LGSM, FTCL, ARCM. A concert standard of performance is required. NOTE: The programme chosen should reflect a balance of period, style and mood. At least one piece must be played from memory to qualify for the award. SENIOR SONATA PRIZE 1st prize: Gold Medal 2nd prize: Silver Medal A Sonata of own choice (excluding Baroque one-movement sonatas). Depending on the number of entries, candidates may be required to play only one movement and the adjudicator will recall a small number to perform the entire work at another session. I n the case of a one-movement sonata or a movement which exceeds 10 minutes, the performance may be limited to 10 minutes. THE FRANK HENEGHAN TROPHY 1 st prize: Trophy and Silver medal 2 nd prize: Bronze medal For piano concerto playing. A movement of any piano concerto. PETROF CUP 1 st prize: Cup and Silver medal 2 nd prize: Bronze medal Any one of the following by J.S. BACH: Any one of the English or French Suites Any one of the Partitas Any one of the Toccatas Any two Preludes and Fugues (one of which must include a Fugue with at least four parts) The Italian Concerto (complete) The Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue The French Overture and Suite in B minor 4

SENIOR REPERTOIRE COMPETITION 1st Prize: Gold Medal 2nd Prize: Silver Medal Minimum entry standard: Grade VIII pass DIT Wholetime students are automatically eligible. A balanced programme of 20-30 minutes duration equivalent in standard to associate diplomas in performance (ATCL, ALCM), representing at least three different musical styles. KATHERINE DUNPHY MEMORIAL MEDALS FOR PERFORMANCE OF CONCERT STUDIES 1st prize: Gold Medal 2nd prize: Silver Medal Two contrasting concert studies. NOTE A romantic/modern toccata may be substituted for one of the above studies. Performance at a high technical and artistic level is expected. Suitability of choice will be taken into account in the examiner's judgement. GERMAN GOVERNMENT CUP 1 st Prize: Cup and silver medal for the best performance of a work by Brahms in a senior piano competition No separate entry required for this award CZECH GOVERNMENT PERPETUAL CRYSTAL TROPHY 1 st prize: Trophy and silver medal for the best performance of a work by Czech composer in a senior piano competition. No separate entry required for this award CONTEMPORARY IRISH MUSIC PRIZE (SENIOR) 1 st prize: Silver medal: for the best performance of a work by a living Irish composer (or written after 1950) in a senior piano competition No separate entry required for this award LISZT PRIZES (GERARD SHANAHAN MEMORIAL AWARDS) SENIOR AWARD: For the best performance of a piece by Liszt in a senior solo competition. JUNIOR AWARD: For the best performance of a piece by Liszt in a junior solo competition. DOROTHY MOULTON MAYER This competition is held in the RIAM in accordance with the agreed conditions. BRISCOE CUP FOR CONCERTO/SENIOR RECITAL 1 st prize : Cup and Silver medal 2 nd prize: Bronze medal ELIGIBILITY All students of the Conservatory who are in their second year and who hold a merit (minimum) Grade 8 (DIT or Associated Board) certificate or equivalent in their instrument/voice (e.g. recognised diploma; 2nd year WT students with honours in the performing section of 1st year examinations) are eligible. TEST A 30-minute recital which must include at least one movement of a concerto or a concert aria. The remainder of the recital must be chosen to give a balance of period, style and technical demand. THE TOMÁS Ó SÚILLEABHÁIN AWARD 1 st Prize: Trophy and Silver medal 2 nd Prize: Bronze medal For Quick Study Accompaniment (over 18 yrs). The test pieces will be announced 7 days before the competition The MARIE JONES AWARD 1 st Prize: Gold medal 2 nd Prize: Silver medal ELIGIBILITY: all students over 18 2 contrasting pieces of own choice not to exceed 15 minutes duration Senior DUET (one or two pianos). 1st Prize: Gold Medals 2nd Prize: Silver Medals A performance (may be a single work) of not less then 10 minutes and not more than 25 minutes. GERTRUDE MORRIS GRANT PERPETUAL CUP (for duo - piano and voice) Note: This is part of the Vocal Competitions FIRST PRIZES: Silver Medals Second Prizes: Bronze Medals The competition will be judged as an equal partnership of singer and pianist. A programme of (a) one Lied, selected from the works of Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Wolf, Mahler, Schoenberg, Berg or Hindemith and (b) one French Art song. 6

JUNIOR PIANO SOLO Under 8 yrs Two contrasting pieces, not to exceed five minutes in total. JUNIOR PIANO SOLO Under 10 yrs Two contrasting pieces, not to exceed five minutes in total. JUNIOR PIANO SOLO Under 12 yrs Two contrasting pieces not to exceed 6 minutes duration. JUNIOR PIANO SOLO Under 14 yrs Two contrasting pieces not to exceed 8 minutes duration. JUNIOR PIANO SOLO Under 16 yrs Two contrasting pieces not to exceed 10 minutes duration. JUNIOR PIANO SOLO Under 18 yrs Programme of own choice not to exceed 12 minutes duration. JUNIOR REPERTOIRE UNDER 14 FIRST PRIZE: GOLD MEDAL 2 ND PRIZE: SILVER MEDAL Test: A programme of 3 own choice works not to exceed 12 minutes in total (Please note that works cannot be performed in other competitions ) JUNIOR REPERTOIRE UNDER 18 FIRST PRIZE: GOLD MEDAL 2 ND PRIZE: SILVER MEDAL Test: A programme of 3 own choice works not to exceed 15 minutes in total (Please note that works cannot be used for other competitions) Note: While the use of one examination piece would be acceptable in the Junior Repertoire competitions, it is not envisaged that complete grade examination programmes would be presented. Students are encouraged to explore as extensive a repertoire as possible. 7

CONTEMPORARY IRISH MUSIC (JUNIOR) Under 18 yrs Silver medal: for the best performance of a piece by a living Irish composer (or written after 1950) in a junior piano competition LUCY DONNELLY CUP Ist Prize: Cup and Siver medal 2 nd Prize: Bronze medal For Quick Study Accompaniment (under 18 yrs). The test pieces will be announced approximately 10 days before the competition. JUNIOR CHAMBER MUSIC to include pianist (piano/instrument(s), piano/voice). Under 18 yrs 1 st Prize: Gold medals 2 nd prize: Silver medals A programme of own choice up to 8 minutes in length. THE ITA BEAUSANG TROPHY Ist Prize : Trophy and silver medal 2 nd prize: Bronze medal For junior concerto performance; open to keyboard and orchestral studies. Piano (under 18): One movement of a piano concerto. Organ (under 19): One movement of an organ concerto. (The Orchestral part to be played on a second piano) THE MAI BYRNE RAYMOND TROPHY 1 st Prize Cup and Silver Medal 2 nd Prize: Bronze medal For Junior (under 18) Sonata performance. One movement of any piano sonata PIANO DUETS For under 14, and under 18 years. 1 st prize; Silver medals 2 nd prize: Bronze medals Two contrasting pieces or movements of own choice 8

ORGAN SENIOR RECITAL COMPETITION 1 st prize: Gold medal 2 nd prize: Silver medal (Grade VIII pass minimum qualification for entry. Wholetime students automatically eligible) This examination is intended as a preparatory stage leading up to the Actors Church Union Award standard. A balanced programme of our choice (25-30 mins) to contain no less than three works of post Grade VIII standard. ACTORS CHURCH UNION AWARD 1 st prize: Trophy and silver medal: 2 nd prize: Bronze medal A recital programme of own choice 30-40 minutes duration equivalent in standard to diploma programmes (performing) such as LCTL, FTCL, LRSM, LRIAM, ARCM A concert standard of performance is required. SIDNEY GRIEG MEMORIAL TROPHY 1 st prize; Trophy and silver medal 2 nd prize: bronze medal This competition is aimed at students of intermediate standard ( e.g. grade 5-8 or equivalent) who are not yet ready for the Senior Recital or Actors Church Union competitions. To perform two contrasting pieces (not more than 10 minutes duration) SENIOR RECITAL COMPETITION 1 st prize: Gold medal HARPSICHORD A 25 minute programme including works from at least four of the following categories: 1. One piece of Virginal Music. 2. One toccata by Frescobaldi or Froberger 3. One unmeasured prelude by Louis Couperin or d'anglebert. 4. Two pieces by Rameau, F. Couperin, Forqueray, Duphly or Balbastre. (Repeats optional). 5. One prelude and Fugue, Fantasy and Fugue or Toccata by J.S. Bach 9
