By the time you read this, the Testival will be history, and planning for our first full Festival at Star Lake will have begun. In the early history of the Festival, we created a new FP t-shirt for every Festival. The design was always the same the FP Logo but the color changed. Festival-goers wore history on their backs and had a unique souvenir. We re doing it again (but different). For our first full festival at Star Lake April 17-19, 2009 we plan to have a brand-new T shirt with a specially designed Festival logo, the names of all Spring Festival performers, and the dates. Suggestions for the new Festival Logo and volunteers to work on the project are welcome. The new design, prices, and other details, will be announced in the FP Newsletter sometime in the coming months. I m (Jim King) heading up the T Shirt initiative. The Minstrel Coffeehouse October 2008 presented by Oct. 3: Siobhan Quinn & Michael Bowers and Hub Hollow SIOBHAN (Shih-vahn) QUINN & MICHAEL BOWERS get another try after having been snowed out in February. You may remember them from their opening act for Vance Gilbert last May. Siobhan has an outstanding voice: expressive, rich, and powerful. The songs are good, the harmonies are good, the guitar work is good, and they are just a lot of fun on stage. And Siobhan might just sneak a traditional Irish song in the set when no one's expecting it. HUB HOLLOW, a local bluegrass band, showed up at our August Open Stage, and just charmed the pants off everyone there. Guitar, bass, mandolin, dobro and 4-part vocal harmonies, all done with class and musicality. These guys are well worth a longer listen. Oct. 10: Open Stage Our almost-monthly opportunity for you to take to our stage. We provide this service to the local acoustic music community, Folk Project members and non-members to perform a 15-minute set of music. The music is diverse and often surprising. Oct. 17: Straight Drive and Dave Sherman & the Funraisers Anyone who saw this band at the Spring 08 Folk Project Festival will have this show in ink on their calendars. STRAIGHT DRIVE delivers straight-up bluegrass. The components are all there: fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass, multiple-part harmony singing, and songs new and old steeped in the tradition of Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, and the other masters. It's hard-driving high energy music played with gusto and verve. DAVE SHERMAN has long been a Folk Project favorite at picking parties and other musical gatherings. His high-energy up-tempo delivery can encompass anything from country blues to folk rock to obscure pop tunes from the 70's and 80's. He and his guitar will be joined by THE FUNRAISERS, Dave Kleiner on guitar and the ubiquitous Bill Meyer on bass. Oct. 24: Saints & Strangers Shows at 8:00pm An unusual and certain to be memorable night at the Minstrel. SAINTS AND STRANGERS is a musical collaboration involving Bill Neely, Bill Bly and Liz Emmert (whom long-timers may remember from the band known as Left Field) as well as Ken and Pat Rolston (perennial Folk Project favorites) and Doug Miles. Their eclectic mix of material, tasty arrangements and powerful vocal harmonies make them a listening treat. Add to that a great deal of wit, wisdom and insight, and you have an evening that's a treat for the brain as well as the ears. Joining them on a number of songs will be the 12-member AD HOC CHORALE. The evening will also include a performance of "Headlong Retreat," an original song cycle that serves as a musical meditation on pilgrimage. Oct. 31: Crowfoot and the Laura Birdsong Project From the borderlands of Canada and New England comes CROWFOOT. Nicholas Williams (flutes & whistles), Jaige Trudel (fiddle, cello), and English born Adam Broome (guitar, cittern) take the driving dance music and songs of their homelands and kick it into overdrive with their own unique and subtle touch. All three sing as well, and they provide wonderful harmonies to the songs. Longtime Folk Project member Laura Bernstein has been playing guitar and singing for as long as she remembers. But recently she has begun to write and perform some very nice songs in the classic country and blues traditions, and has put together THE LAURA BIRDSONG PROJECT. This band features lead guitar, bass, percussion and harmony vocals. PRESENTS Tales for a Waning Moon Storyteller Buck P. This second-annual Folk Project Halloween event features master storyteller Buck P. Creacy from Georgetown, KY. Buck s stories, geared to adult audiences, will light the night with wit and humor. He s razor-sharp, but never malicious. Buck P. Creacy has performed from Maine to California, Canada to Texas, and across the Atlantic. He is president of the Kentucky Storytelling Association, a member of the National Storytelling Network, an honest to God toolmaker with 30 years of shop experience, and a guitar and harmonica player. He has performed on XM 171 Satellite Radio The Trucker s Channel telling stories for three million truck drivers and listeners. He s been compared to Roy Clark, Jerry Clower, and Will Rogers. Come celebrate Halloween with a room full of friends and a houseful of stories and music. Bring your instruments open jam after the storytelling. Storytellers Corner Interested in hearing stories or learning the art of telling? A great way to begin is by joining one of the many storytelling groups throughout the state. Meetings are open to listeners and storytellers of all levels of experience. Some groups conduct workshops that address aspects of storytelling or hone telling skills. Many meetings have swaps, where individuals share stories with other members. All groups have storytellers who are available for paid engagements. 10 A Blending of the Brands Long-time Folk Project members will recall the days when two very popular bands regularly graced our Minstrel and Festival stages. They were Left Field, a thinking person s quartet, and WSAGNBSCALRME, an unclassifiable trio. Bill Nemo Neely was Left Field s primary songwriter, and in April 2007, he recruited a whole passel of folks for a new creative project: assembling a song cycle based on the notion of pilgrimage. These recruits included Left Field veterans Emmert and Bly, long-time collaborator Doug Miles, and Ken and Pat Rolston of WSAG. I was there, too Over a number of months, these Saints and Strangers traded ideas, worked out tunes, wrote new material, developed arrangements, refined those arrangements and gradually hammered the piece into shape. Along the way, we came to call it Headlong Retreat, both for its own thematic content and for the weekend retreats through which it was brought to life. Headlong was first performed in October 2007, in a workshop setting at Little Pond Arts Retreat. Afterward, more hammering ensued. There was a second performance at Saint John s Windish Church, and it was tweaked and tuned some more. Now we re ready to unleash it on a new audience, before it gets a two-night run at the Touchstone Theater of Bethlehem, PA, in January. It s something you ll remember, so we hope you can come out for a listen. SUMMARY: Acceptance of the Minutes: The August minutes were accepted as corrected to show that Scooter is a Trustee expiring in 09, and by Mike to note that the date of the Minstrel brainstorming meeting had not yet been decided upon at the time of the meeting. Treasurer s Report: Chris reminded us that it s easy to get reports from QuickBooks Online with the extras (e.g. memberships taken at Minstrel) not included in the totals. He defended the default way (e.g. including memberships taken at Minstrel as Minstrel income) because it captures information that would not otherwise be available (e.g. We can answer the question How many memberships were taken at Minstrel between January and June? ) It s also a convenience for the Treasurer to be able to enter the tally sheet for each event as a single transaction. Nominating Committee: Scooter, Mike, and Brad volunteered to serve on the committee, with Evelyn as Chair subject to agreement by Evelyn who was absent. December meeting site: George was absent. Mark will discuss it with him and they will report at next meeting. Testival: Lori is testing a new approach that she hopes will reduce our expenses for scholarships. The idea is to make most jobs small enough as not to need a scholarship. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Newsletter: Elizabeth volunteered to handle the labeling, mailing, stamping, through December. We still need a permanent volunteer or group of volunteers to handle this for future Newsletters. If you are interested, talk to Mark. Storytelling: Rivka distributed flyers for the Storytelling Festival at Grounds for Sculpture. Volunteers are welcome. Talk to Rivka. Special Concerts: Pam reports that the Howard Emerson concert went well and we didn t lose too much money. Upcoming is a houseconcert jam with Barbara Lamb at Mark and Robin s, a Halloween story concert with Buck P Creacy, and a swing dance/concert jointly with S n T. Membership: They sent out about a dozen electronic newsletters. Publicity: The web pages to sign up for the electronic newsletter are almost ready. Internal Affairs: Jean reports that September EoM will be at Leslie Brown s. October is still TBD. Sound: Bob will pick up Jim West s equipment for Testival. Somebody from Festival Ops will have to inventory the stuff in Rick s garage. Minstrel Staffing: Rick is stepping aside as Head Staff. Volunteers are solicited for the job of Minstrel Head Staff no experience necessary mentoring is available for beginners. The muchfeared Tally Sheet (aka Minstrel Form 1040) will be revised and greatly simplified. Minstrel: The creel will be undergoing repair and show up with new leather hinges and strap. Horses Sing None of It: Ralph reports that we have a signed release from the estate of John Jackson. The FP will get credits on whatever Stephen Grossman eventually produces. Comedy Workshops at Teen Center Kate Lyn Reiter, veteran comedienne and dramatist, brings her popular comedy workshop to the Teen Center in the Roxbury Township Recreation Department in Succasunna for 8 Monday nights, beginning October 6 and running through November 24. Ms. Reiter is offering 2 introductory comedy workshops for those 8 weeks. Sessions for Beginners are Monday evenings 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Jim King is celebrating a new generational right of passage, as his granddaughter got her driver s license and had her first minor accident. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Sandie Reilly is doing the MS Bike tour for her third time this year, after completing other fundraising rides over the past few months including a 270 mile Tri-State Trek from Boston to New York to raise money to fight ALS. Wow! Jean Scully s daughter, Siobhan, had a great time at summer Band Camp and is starting her sophomore year of High School. Pelvis Burlapp is recovering from a bad case of attenuated uvula, which he developed at the Lower Missouri Warbler Festival in early September. He appreciates all the cards and rotten tomatoes hurled his way during his convalescence Elizabeth Lachowicz s son, Thomas, is attending boarding school in Mexico, MO for the year. He is both excited and apprehensive about the challenges of this opportunity. He would LOVE to receive cards and letters of support from his FP family. Please contact Elizabeth for Thomas address. Mike Agranoff enjoyed his performance at the naked folk festival last month. He is proud to say that he put photos up on his website. Perhaps someone will volunteer to write an article for next month s newsletter describing these photos! Ruth Wolfish took a treetop walk through Britain s Kew Gardens. She said, It was amazing! The 220 yard circular walkway, 60 feet above the ground allowed her a unique and inspirational view of the forest. Rick Thomas and his family will be celebrating his father s 98th Birthday at an upcoming party in Ithaca. Rick was heard to say, If the secret to longevity is good living and good genes, then I must be halfway there. Mark and Robin Schaffer spent a week at the Grand Canyon and a day in Las Vegas with all 6 of their children. Mark injured his knee on the trip, but it is healing. In addition to the wonderful memories of good times and family fun, Mark tells us that all should ask him about an amazing souvenir he brought back.
