2 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by May 1: Amy Speace and Josh Joffen Irish World Magazine said it best about AMY SPEACE: "This cool little lady... has one of those spellbinding voices that just draws you in... soft and seductive, yet witty and street smart, and a little dangerous... Her voice is to die for but the Americana folkie, twangy country arrangements... and the confrontational songwriting come up to the same level. This album is like the summer we never had... she gets two fullhearted thumbs up. Hell, I'll give her a few digits extra. She's that good." Opening for Amy is another superb songwriter. A veteran of the Greenwich Village "Speakeasy" songwriters' scene of the 80's, JOSH JOFFEN offers highly crafted songs well sung and well played with spirit and emotion. His song most familiar to local listeners is "The Girl From The Great Divide" as recorded by Mike Agranoff May 8: Joel Mabus and Sonas JOEL MABUS is the man with everything: Outstanding chops on guitar, fiddle, and banjo. Wonderful sense of humor. Great skill as a songwriter as well an astute tastefulness in the songs he selects to cover. And a subtle theatricality to his stage presence that captivates and engrosses the listener. Opening this evening is SONAS, the foursome of Margie Waldrum (keyboard), Tina Kirk (fiddle), Jim O'Brien (guitar), and Erin Flanagan Lind (vocals) Together they play a variety of music from the Celtic lands, with special emphasis on the exciting dance music of Cape Breton in Canada. (NOTE: Open Stage is next week.) May 15: Open Stage (not our usual 2nd Friday; preceded by an Open Stage Workshop at 7:15) The Minstrel provides this service to our local musical community and passing traveling professionals to be heard by the public and maybe to be booked for a future show. Those who wish to perform at the OPEN STAGE should visit Those who wish to see and hear a wide variety of performers should attend. May 22: Frank & Hank and Tyler, Spirig & Schmidt An eclectic mix of music from bluegrass to jazz to standards comes from the agile musical minds of Folk Project members FRANK Sole AND HANK (Hen3ry) Nerenberg PLUS BILL (Meyers) on bass. Frank is a skilled guitarist both in lead flatpicking styles and in Djangoinspired jazz. Hen3ry (the 3 is silent) has one of the widest ranging musical minds in the Project, and is a genius at innovative and appropriate arrangement. They wowed the crowd at the Spring 08 FP Festival. Another trio of eclectics, Josh TYLER, Robin SCHMIDT, and Bernhard SPIRIG opens the evening. These are three young musicians who glean their material from sources ranging from Leonard Cohen to Commander Cody to Duke Ellington to traditional folk. They process the music with tasty guitar and bass playing, and it comes out great. May 29: Carla Ulbrich and Gerry Wincklhofer A fan favorite on the long-running, nationally syndicated Dr. Demento show, award-winning songwriter and general smarty-pants CARLA ULBRICH has been compared to the likes of Ray Stevens, Christine Lavin, Jerry Seinfeld, Chet Atkins and Jewel. The guy who said Jewel had been drinking heavily. Recently relocated from her native South Carolina to Somerset, NJ, and a member of the Folk Project, Carla brings a mix of humor, poignancy and nifty guitar playing to the stage. Our opener, GERRY WINCKLHOFER likes to call himself a "monologist." That's a fancy word for storyteller, without the implication that his stories are for kids. He tells of fascinating people and happenings true and fictional, but no one, least of all he himself can say for sure which is which. (Gerry will turn 80 years old two days after this concert!) UPCOMING: 6/5: Powerful singer-songwriter JOHN FLYNN; 6/19: THE FOLK BROTHERS David Massengill & Jack Hardy; 6/26: HICKORY TREE CHORUS; 7/3: Guitarist, wordsmith, funny man, and the Minstrel s Program Chairman, MIKE AGRANOFF; 7/24: The Minstrel s BIRTHDAY SHOW; 7/31: Blues guitarist extraordinaire TOBY WALKER The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. It can be slow and spacy, or fast and rhythmic, and crosses many genres. Why am I [Andy Koenig] telling you this? Because the people who run that website put on an annual festival, and this year it's at Star Lake over Halloween weekend, three weeks after our own Fall Festival. Visit electro-music.com/event2009 for more info. 6 Swingin Tern Moving to a New Home Swingin Tern Dances will be leaving its nest in Chatham and migrating north six miles to East Hanover. After 23 years of dancing at Ogden Memorial Church in Chatham, we will be moving to the First Presbyterian Church of East Hanover. The first dance in the new hall will be on June 6. Escalating costs led us to search for a venue that would allow us to maintain the quality of performers and site while preserving our current admission fee. We are sad to leave our familiar home at Ogden but excited by the advantages of the new space. The Parish House of First Church has a wonderful larger wooden floor and large windows flanking each side of the dance hall to give great ventilation. There is plenty of parking in the lot adjacent to the Parish House. We are fortunate to keep things in the family since Folk Project member Margaret Crowl is the current pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Come bid a fond farewell to our Ogden home with dances on May 2nd and May 16th. Then come celebrate our new First Church home on June 6th. Our first dance in the new nest will be called by Folk Project and Swingin Tern family member Bob Isaacs. Lost on the Turnpike will provide the driving music, the band includes Project members Chris Carpenter and Eve Rantzer. Don t let the band name mislead you, the new hall is easy to get to it s just off Route 10. Full directions are on the web at dance.folkproject.org. Please join us at the May dances to collect the twigs of fond memories and on June 6th entwine them into our cozy new nest at First Presbyterian Church of East Hanover. It was a real nice festival. We re mighty glad we came! With a tip of the hat to Rodgers and Hammerstein, it did seem like everyone was mighty glad that they came to the Folk Project Spring Festival. The performances were excellent, the skit was great, the weather cooperated, and a lot of people were walking around with grins on their faces on Sunday afternoon. We had 188 in attendance and it looks like the festival will make a profit I don t know the exact amount yet, so I ll report it next month. All around, I would say, it was a smashing success. Putting on a festival like this is a huge effort and a large number of people worked very hard to make it happen. It was gratifying to see so many of you volunteering to help out by doing workshops, participating in the skit, sweeping the floors, helping park cars you name it. Whatever needed doing, we had willing helpers to get it done. It is not possible to thank everyone personally here, but I would like to thank the following people who went above and beyond to help out: Barbara Moo, Jim King, Bobbie Rosengarten, Bill Cox, Ruth Wolfish, Pam Robinson, Liz Pagan, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Bob Safranek, Sandie Reilly, George Otto, Mike Agranoff, Chris Jacoby, Lois DeRitter, Sandie Reilly, Scott Sheldon, Sam Edelston, Ken Galipeau, Laurie Tupper, Doug Healy and Connor Dugan. It truly was a real nice festival and we all had a real good time. Folk Project Fall Festival Oct. 9 11: Take out your calendar right now and circle the weekend of October 9-11, because you are not going to want to miss the fall festival. Our performer line-up will include Red Molly, Vance Gilbert, Walt Michael, Martin Swinger and Illegal Contraband (aka A. J. Bodnar, Liza DiSavino, Peter Blue and Tom Wetmore). This is going to be a festival to remember. Yours in folk, Lori Falco, Festival Chair 7

6 Storytellers Corner The 17th annual NJ Storytelling Festival will return to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ, October 18, This year we plan to offer two workshops in the morning before the performances begin. Each workshop will run about two hours. Please for a proposal form. If you have any questions please send us an or call Rivka at Interested in hearing stories or learning the art of telling? A great way to begin is by joining one of the many storytelling groups throughout the state. Meetings are open to listeners and storytellers of all levels of experience. 7 Folk Project Board Meeting April 2009: Board Meeting: The Summary At the home of Ed and Robin Roffman. Called to order at 8:00pm by President Mark Schaffer. ATTENDANCE: TRUSTEES: Lois De Ritter, Scooter Ferguson, Jim Gartner, Jim King, Brad Pryor, Jim West. OFFICERS: (Vice President) Evelyn Maurer, (Treasurer) Ed Roffman, (Secretary) Rick Thomas. OTHERS: (Minstrel)Mike Agranoff, (Newsletter)Carl Croce, (Festival)Lori Falco, (Finance) Andy Koenig, (Community Affairs)Elizabeth Lachowicz, (Publicity & Webmaster) George Otto, (Staffing & HSNOI) Sandie Reilly, (Special Concerts) Pam Robinson, (Membership)Pat Rolston, (Sound) Bob Safranek, (Internal Affairs) Jean Scully. GUESTS: Judy Bubar. ABSENT: Allan Kugel, (S'n'T)Connie Crawford, (Storytelling)Rivka Willick, (Merchandise)Bobbie Rosengarten, Ruth Wolfish. The minutes of February were accepted without correction. Treasurer s Report: Eddie reminds us all that the Festival income is a liability until the Festival actually happens and there s no longer a chance that we will have to refund it. Key Dates: The New Jersey Folk Festival, in New Brunswick, is coming April 25. See Elizabeth if you would like to volunteer to staff the Folk Project desk. Ed reports that the Form 1090 (non-profit tax form) will be filed on time. NEW BUSINESS: Borderline: Mark reports that the Borderline Folk Music Concert Series is out of our area and proposed to write a letter explaining that we can not help them. It was moved and passed to do so. Ad hoc Committee on Compensation Policy: Rick reviewed the committee s report and, after a short discussion, last month s motion was passed with the amendment of changing the words the proposal s claimed benefits to the Folk Project to the proposal s expected costs and benefits to the Folk Project. Scooter was appointed to form the Fellowships Committee. ACMA Grant: Pam reported that it s time again to write the yearly proposal. She has done it for the last several years and would like to pass the task along to someone else. So far she s not found any volunteers to take it on. Mike requests that she continue looking, and offers to provide her with some names. Privacy Policy: There was considerable discussion, but no motions made. In the end we agreed to discuss it some more via , and come back to the question next month. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Sound: Bob reports that moving S n T to their new venue will require spending between $200 and $400 to improve the storage space at the new location. Finance: Andy is waiting til the weekend of Festival to use the market value of the endowment fund on that day for his determination of the amount to apply to Festival s budget. Festival: Lori notes that the Spring Festival will probably make a profit this time around and the endowment transfer may actually not be necessary. If that is the case, she requests that the money be applied to Fall Festival s budget instead. Minstrel: Mike reports that attendance was disappointing, but not out of line. We should be able to continue the $7 door price. We have purchased an inexpensive computer and Rick will be writing a program for it to help make filling out the tally sheet and keeping track of attendance statistics easier. Staffing: Sandie has a few new volunteers. Even so, a couple of nights recently she s come close to not having a full staff at show time. She asks that everyone volunteer to help out when they can. Hartmann has taken over the Head Staff duties and is doing well. Mark reports that November 27th, the Friday after Thanksgiving, will be Folk Project Family Day, to celebrate all the great musicians in our extended family. HSNOI: Ralph reports that the March tapings had to be cancelled due to lousy weather, but the April tapings with Marc Ribler and Danielle Miraglia went well, and lots of great stuff coming up. In response to a letter from our Fargo outlet that VHS tape would no longer be accepted, Sandie moved and it was passed that up to $600 be allocated for the purchase of pro-grade DVD copying equipment. Andy will be looking into making HSNOI shows available on Netflix. Swingin Tern: Connie reports by that we have a signed agreement with First Hanover Church of East Hanover to relocate the dance there starting in June (thanks to Margaret Crowl and many others for their support in this effort). Ogden has been notified that we will be moving in June. We have agreed to pay them half the cost to refinish the floor when we leave, $700. At Hanover, we will also do a major campaign to win new dancers, including providing free passes to the church congregation and the Jazzercise classes that take place there during the day. Special Concerts: The Tommy Sands Family concert on March 11 was a wonderful event. Attendance was not as high as we had hoped, so we lost about $600 on the show. The Spring Workshop series got underway with the Randall Williams guitar workshop. The series looks to break even, more-or-less. Thanks to Rick & Cathy for hosting the next one with Siobhan Quinn on April 11. The last workshop will be at Bobbie s house on May 9, with Andy Goessling instructing on how to be a better accompanist. We are moving ahead to get John McCutcheon for November 7. Newsletter: Carl says that they have found a way to use staples at the fold to hold the pages together while still keeping the Post Office happy. Membership: We send out about 115 electronic newsletters and about 400 of the print version. A few people (about 50) have expressed a clear preference for print. Web&Publicity: George will be passing the publicity baton off to Mark Schaffer soon. George has done it for 15 years and it s time for someone else to step up. Joe D Andrea will be taking over the technical post of web guru as part of the Publicity Committee. It was moved and passed unanimously that the Board thanks and appreciates George Otto for his 15 years of service and dedication. Merchandise: The new T-shirts will be here for Festival. We will be selling them at cost. We have ordered a case of the large-print edition of Rise up Singing songbooks, and they will also be available at Festival. They will also be sold at cost. Internal Affairs: Jean reports that the April Evening of Music will be at Rick & Cathy Thomas house following the Quinn workshop. The May EoM will be at Bobbie s following the Andy Goessling workshop. Community Affairs: Elizabeth report that Mark Wolkoff had a heart attack, but is feeling better. He appreciates calls. Good of the Order is elsewhere in the newsletter. Talk to Eddie if you ve had or know about someone who s had a significant event in their lives recently. Adjournment: 10:35 PM. Next meeting: May5 at Bobbie Rosengarten s. GOOD OF THE ORDER/COMMUNITY NEWS This is a place to share news about memorable events and challenges you have faced in the past month with your Folk Project Community. Please send items to Eddie Roffman, eroffman@optonline.net. Longtime NJ folk musician and FP friend Mark Wolkoff recently had a heart attack. He had a stent inserted and is currently feeling much better. Lori Falco strongly recommends that everyone should attend the upcoming Minstrel performance of Amy Speace on May 1. Lori saw Amy perform last year at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and at NERFA, saying I thought she was terrific! Rick Thomas just celebrated his 63rd birthday. He enjoyed sharing his birthday celebration with the April FP Evening of Music at his (and wife Cathy s) home. Rick reports that the tuxedo cat they adopted when their neighbor died last December has finally come out from behind the couch. In another interesting incident, after the wife of Rick s father s best friend looked up Rick s dad s phone number, the friend thought that Rick s dad seemed to be unable to remember important things that he should be able to know. She called Rick, in fear that Rick s dad s memory wasn t functioning well. It turned out that she had gotten the wrong number from information! Rick s father is fine and his memory is (still) fine. This has Rick feeling grateful for his father s continued good health. Jim King has been working out. As part of a conditioning program he has been participating in at a techno gym he goes to, he recently won a prize for burning over 600 calories in a workout! Brad Pryor went to Toledo for a recent remote control model show. He met someone there who is planning to launch a 1,700lb, 36-foot-long rocket in a few weeks. Brad also had a chance, in Toledo, to practice his skill at flirting with attractive young women. Ask him to show you a picture that he had taken to prove this. Way to go, Brad! Elizabeth Lachowicz enjoyed spending time with her son, Thomas, when he was home for spring break. Thomas had a great time at the FP evening of music. Carl Croce performed recently, along with Ken Galipeau, on the Heartlands Hayride radio show. Andy has been beta testing music production software called Ableton Live 8. He gives it a thumbs up. On April 26, the Early Music Players (with FP members John Lamb, Kris Lamb, Ilizabeth Cabrera and Andy) will be performing in Essex Fells to celebrate Shakespeare s birthday. Sandie Reilly s bike broke and the manufacturer was only able to replace it with an upgraded carbon fiber frame from a super duper more expensive model. She loves this new bike. She recently competed in a bicycle time trial competition and was satisfied with the results. Jim Gartner took a trip to visit his brother in North Carolina. They played golf together and Jim reported that he was able to hit the ball surprisingly well. Siobhan Scully got a varsity letter in fencing. She will be spending Passover with Pam Robinson and Pam s sister in Massachusetts. Eddie Roffman started a new Cantorial job at Congregation Knesseth Israel in Bound Brook. He is loving it. Scooter reports that his upcoming festival set has morphed into a return of Scooter, Sherman and Hickey. George Otto celebrated his one-year anniversary of working at Mercedes Benz. He has just been promoted to become the head of his group. Judy Bubar entered the Philadelphia Flower Show this year and earned 3 second places, 6 third places, and 4 honorable mentions
