A Musicia i Josephiia Viea by Ady Kight I 1781, composer Wolfgag Amadeus Mozart (1756-91), the 25 years old, settled i Austria s capital, Viea. Fially free of his positio i the court of the Archbishop of Salzburg with whom he had a fraught relatioship Mozart yeared to fid success i Austria s most musical city. Italia composer Atoio Salieri (1750-1825), six years Mozart s seior, certaily had doe so. Salieri, who first arrived i Viea i 1766, held the illustrious positio of chamber composer i the court of Joseph II, Holy Roma Emperor ad ruler of the Habsburg moarchy. Ideed, Salieri was the epitome of all that Viea had to offer musicias: imperial ad private patroage, a measure of creative freedom ad fame ad fortue. Joseph II: The Elighteed Despot Whe the Empress Maria Theresa died i 1780, Joseph II (1741-90), her eldest so, became sole ruler of the Habsburg dyasty, whose domai icluded Austria, Hugary, Bohemia ad parts of Italy ad Belgium. At that time, Joseph already was Holy Roma Emperor ad had bee sice his father Fracis I died i 1765. The Holy Roma Empire overlapped with some (though ot all) of the Habsburg lads, ad so the positio of emperor, while techically a elected official, remaied i the hads of the powerful Habsburg family for ceturies. Although Joseph shared the resposibility of rulig with his mother, begiig i 1765, the Empress maitaied the ultimate authority over both domiios durig her life. Oce the sole ruler, Joseph seized the opportuity to eact policies based i the ideals of the Elightemet the movemet that emphasized, amog other thigs, reaso ad persoal liberty. His Josephiia reforms addressed a variety of issues icludig religious tolerace, the abolitio of serfdom, the freedom of the press ad the use of Germa laguage i govermet ad educatio. Although Joseph hoped his policies would liberate his subjects, may were upopular ad his decade-log reig was turbulet. The Theatres of Viea As the Habsburg capital, Viea was home to the imperial Hofburg palace, which housed the court s Burgtheater. Much like the Kärtertor Theater, located outside the palace but still cotrolled by the court, the Burgtheater preseted performaces o a regular schedule ulike the old court theatre, where performaces were reserved for royal celebratios. What s more, the Burgtheater, like the Kärtertor, was ope to the payig public. I the 1780s, some of Mozart s most famous operas, icludig The Marriage of Figaro ad Così fa tutte, premiered at the Burgtheater. However, ot all of Viea s theatres were withi the city itself. After Joseph brought the court theatres uder his direct cotrol i 1776, he lifted a umber of restrictios placed o performaces outside of the royal theatres. Over the followig decade, suburba theatres like the Theater auf der Wiede, where Mozart s The Magic Flute premiered i 1791 bega to ope their doors. Vieese Opera Whe Joseph assumed cotrol of the court theatres i 1776, he attempted to improve Viea s etertaimet ad promote his Josephiia ideals. He promptly fired the theatrical maagemet, as well as the lackluster opera buffa (Italia comic opera) ad ballet troupes of the Burgtheater. He did, however, rehire the performers of Germa plays. By presetig oly these works, Joseph hoped to save moey, promote Germaizatio ad perhaps udermie the aristocracy, who preferred Italia opera. Joseph s attempt to quell the performace of opera buffa i Viea, however, was more a symbol tha a strict edict. Although the court theatres o loger produced Italia opera, Joseph allowed other compaies to use the theatre spaces whe court performaces were ot scheduled. Usig that rule, the same opera buffa troupe that Joseph fired reassembled ad performed at the Burgtheater withi a year. By 1778, Joseph ameded his drastic restrictios ad permitted the performaces of sigspiels, Germa operas with dialogue, at the court theatres. Ad by 1783, Joseph releted completely ad reistated Italia opera. Cocerts ad Commissios i Viea Vieese custom discouraged the performace of opera durig Advet ad Let, so musicias used those periods to give cocerts, both i theatres ad i private homes. But, while the Catholic Church s caledar imposed restrictios o musical performaces outside of the church, Joseph s reforms greatly limited the use of music withi the church; ad by the early 1780s, simple Germa hyms had replaced the ostetatious fully orchestrated masses of the previous decade. While the simplificatio of church music left may musicias without a job, it also freed composers to write more secular music. Durig the secod half of the 18th cetury, methods of patroage also bega to shift. At that time, may obles, who might have offered fulltime employmet i the past, egaged composers o a piece-by-piece basis. For the composers, this type of agreemet was less stable, but also less restrictive; it allowed them to compose a variety of work, ot oly the type that iterested their fulltime patro. For Mozart, a prolific ad creative composer, this ew form of patroage was attractive, ad he hoped to fid much of it i Josephiia Viea. It was, after all, a city that loved music ad supported its creatio. Ad so, i 1781, whe Mozart moved to Viea to search for success, he was ot ulike may other musicias of his day. Mozart, Salieri ad the Theatre of History by Ady Kight A dramatic depictio of Mozart s burial, 1860 lithograph. From Rumors to Legeds O December 12, 1791, oly a week after the composer died from a feverish prickly heat, a Berli ewspaper prited a obituary for Wolfgag Amadeus Mozart that eded with: Because his body swelled up after death, some people believe that he was poisoed. This was the first that is, the first prited metio of murder, but it would t be the last. After all, Mozart s death had the trappigs of a teacious mystery: he was a youg ma (oly 35 years old); he was stricke with a sudde, iexplicable illess; ad he had a celebrated musical oeuvre to keep his memory alive. Details withi Fraz Niemetschek s Mozart: The First Biography, origially published i 1798, icreased suspicios of foul play. The book describes a coversatio shared betwee Mozart ad his wife, durig which Mozart cofessed, I am oly too coscious my ed will ot be log i comig; for sure, someoe has poisoed me! Over the ceturies, may have speculated who that someoe was. Theories have poited to a umber of culprits, icludig Fraz Hofdemel, the husbad of a studet with whom Mozart allegedly had a affair; Baro Gottfried va Swiete, oe of the composer s logtime patros; ad members of Mozart s Freemaso Lodge. Those who subscribed to the Freemasos cospiracy that the famously secretive fraterity assassiated Mozart after he revealed their symbols i his opera The Magic Flute used the composer s death as a meas to write polemics agaist the Masos. Later, i 1930s Berli, the story of Mozart s death at the hads of the Freemasos evolved ito somethig eve more far-fetched: his death at the hads of a secret Jewish cospiracy. A New Role for Atoio Salieri The most famous amog the may murder theories, however, implicates Mozart s fellow composer, Atoio Salieri. I 1823, rumors circulated that Salieri, who had become seile i his old age, cofessed to poisoig Mozart. Salieri s doctor ad former studets tried to dispel the reports as mere slader, but the damage was already doe. The story boasted itrigue, jealousy ad, most importatly, a celebrity rivalry ad so it edured. I 1830, five years after Salieri s death, Russia poet Alexader Pushki wrote a short play, Mozart ad Salieri, i which the evious Italia composer poisos Mozart. I 1898, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov adapted the play ito a oe-act opera of the same ame. Salieri was i the spotlight agai, but, this time, ot for his musical cotributios. Although most historias ad musicologists agree that Mozart died of a illess perhaps a ifectio that caused his already weak kideys to fail ad that the theories of Salieri ad poiso are more titillatig tha true, the rumors of murder raise iterestig questios. What was the ature of Salieri ad Mozart s relatioship? Ad did Salieri view Mozart as a threat? P6 South Coast Repertory Amadeus

Settig the Stage Today, music lovers cosider Mozart s work superior to Salieri s. I 1781, however, whe Mozart arrived i Viea, Salieri had bee i the Habsburg capital for 15 years ad was a revered composer i the court of Emperor Joseph II. The Italia Salieri boasted may successful opera productios, a log roster of studets ad Joseph s persoal admiratio. Mozart loged for the same ad quickly became jealous: i a letter to his father, dated December 15, 1781, Mozart lameted that the emperor cares for o oe but Salieri. By 1783 the year that Joseph reistated the court theatre s opera buffa compay, which supplated the Germa sigspiel Mozart s evy had become paraoia. He feared that the Italia opera troupe, uder Salieri, their music director, was cospirig agaist him. There is little cocrete evidece that Mozart s fears about Salieri were legitimate ad ot merely hadwrigig due to professioal frustratio. (After all, suspicios regardig acts of orgaized sabotage, or cabals, were commo withi the opera the.) Of Mozart, the diplomatic Salieri said very little. Late i life, he expressed admiratio for the composer s music he called The Marriage of Figaro his favorite Mozart opera although he amed Christoph Gluck the greatest opera composer. But if Salieri recogized Mozart s talet whe they both lived i Viea, he might have felt threateed, eve if he did t articulate it. While Joseph was a great supporter of Salieri s, he admired Mozart, too; ideed, Salieri received the most imperial patroage durig Joseph s reig, but Mozart received the secod most. As composers, Salieri ad Mozart o doubt iflueced each other s work a importat aspect of the cotemporaries relatioship that is perhaps overshadowed by their suspected rivalry. I the late 1780s, for example, whe Mozart s Italia operas were fidig much success, Salieri bega to experimet with musical techiques that evoke Mozart s style. It s likely that Mozart beefitted from seeig Salieri s work, as well. The darker momets i Do Giovai, a opera buffa, show that by the mid-1780s Mozart o loger felt tethered to the strict covetios of comic opera that had limited him i the past. Salieri s opera, Trofoio s Cave, also vacillates betwee the dark ad the light, ad it was ejoyig much popularity whe Mozart was writig Do Giovai. At the very least, seeig Trofoio s Cave (ad its success) must have hearteed Mozart. Truth ad Fictio Gossip ad speculatio surroudig Mozart s death quickly muddied history, ad so the truth behid Salieri ad Mozart s relatioship will forever remai a mystery. Time has brought oe importat truth to light, though: while both composers made a great cotributio to classical music, Salieri s work will forever live i the shadow of the great Mozart s. Eve durig his lifetime, Salieri s celebrity bega to fade. I Amadeus, playwright Peter Shaffer depicts a presciet Salieri who coteds with that truth. Ad by writig such a celebrated play, Shaffer might have positioed Mozart ad Salieri s relatioship as oe that s more sigificat i the history of moder drama tha i the history of classical music. Mozart s Operas i Amadeus The Abductio from the Seraglio The story is really amusig, Majesty. The whole plot is set i a Well it s actually set i a seraglio A pasha s harem. Mozart, Amadeus The Abductio from the Seraglio (Die Etführug aus dem Serail), a sigspiel, premiered at Viea s Burgtheater o July 16, 1782. It tells the story of a youg woma trapped i a Turkish harem ad her lover s attempt to rescue her. After its successful premiere, it was performed across Germa-speakig Europe to much acclaim. But the complex score challeged some audieces perhaps eve Emperor Joseph II, who purportedly said, Too beautiful for our ears, ad far too may otes, My Dear Mozart. A boudoir! because that to me is the most excitig place o earth! Mozart, Amadeus The Marriage of Figaro (Le ozze di Figaro) was Mozart s first opera buffa with librettist Lorezo Da Pote, a artistic partership that would later yield Do Giovai ad Così fa tutte.
