LIONS CLUB CATANIA BELLINI International Prize for Composers Vincenzo Bellini 2016-17 The LIONS CLUB CATANIA BELLINI, in the 30th year from its foundation, announces the International Prize for Composers Vincenzo Bellini 2016-17; only music composers may sit the exam. The Club, named after Bellini, intends in this way to honour this great musician, and to favour the affirmation of art talents in the sphere of Music Creation. The prize will be assigned through a public competition. REGULATIONS Art. 1 Participation in the International Prize for Composers Vincenzo Bellini 2016-17 is open to music composers of all nationalities. There is no age limit. Art. 2 The application, duly completed according to the scheme shown in the forms at the end of this document, should be sent within January 20, 2017 (see the next art. 3). Participants, within this date, should pay the participation fee of Euro 60 (sixty) for each piece of music submitted, by means of bank transfer, addressed to LIONS CLUB CATANIA BELLINI IBAN: IT 07 B 02008 16932 000102838757. Reason for payment: Participation fee for the prize for composers. In the case of failed participation, or if the application is not after this regulations, the participation fee will not be refunded.
Art. 3 First Phase Together with the application, the participants should send, in an anonymous form, two copies of the score on paper (dimension: A4) and the corresponding file in pdf format (on CD or pen drive) by registered mail within January 20, 2017 (date as postmark) to the following address: Prof.ssa Giuseppa Attaguile Via Barletta, 5 95125 Catania (ITALY) The score, and the corresponding file, should be marked by a motto and should be accompanied by a closed envelope (marked by the same motto ) containing the following: Application Statement specifying that the piece of music submitted is original and has never been played before. Permission to play, public, record, and spread the work. A copy of an identity document or passport. Curriculum Vitae (updated). Copy of the receipt of the bank transfer concerning the payment of the participation fee. Each participant can submit more than one piece of music; in this instance, the participant must pay a participation fee of Euro 60 for each of the submitted pieces. Characteristics of the piece of music to be submitted: The piece of music submitted must be referable to Vincenzo Bellini (his life, his music), and should be suited for being played by an symphonic orchestra formed (at maximum) by two flutes (one may be a small flute or piccolo ), two oboes, two clarinets (one may be bass clarinet), two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, a piano, timpani, percussion instruments, strings, harp. The duration of the pieces of music submitted should be about ten minutes. Second Phase (final) After the first selection, the jury will elect a maximum of three finalists, whose names will be communicated within February 20, 2017. Within fifteen days from this communication (made via e- mail or phone), the finalists should make sure that the materials needed for the first playing of the submitted works is delivered at the address of the President of the Lions Club Catania Bellini, Prof.ssa Giuseppa Attaguile, Via Barletta, 5 95125 Catania (Italy). The above material should be easily readable and appropriately made. Failure to provide this material within the above deadline entails the exclusion from the competition. The scores will not be returned. The compositions selected through a final decision of the board will be played during a Gala Concert, which will be held in a place and date to be arranged. During this event, the board will declare the winner.
Art. 4 The judging committee, chaired by the composer Sonia Bo, will consist of teachers at academies of music, or at prestigious music institutions, and musicians of great renown, as well as by Prof.ssa Maria Schillaci e Prof. Daniele Petralia, members of the Club. During the work of the judging Committee, the following member of the Club will be present, but without having the right to vote: The President of the Lions Club Catania Bellini, Prof. Giuseppa Attaguile; The President of the Committee on Bellini of the Club, Dr. Anna Riggio. Art. 5 Participation in the competition entails that the participant accepts unconditionally the present Regulations. The Lions Club Catania Bellini reserves the right to modify these Regulations in the case this is necessary; in this instance, the modifications introduced will be communicated to the participants, in order to achieve transparency and quick communication. Art. 6 The winner of the prize will receive the amount of Euro 1,000.00 (a thousand) and a certificate of honour. To this amount, a further amount of Euro 500.00 (five hundreds) will be added (thus reaching the amount of Euro 1,500.00 a thousand and five hundred) in the case that the participant has submitted a composition with the characteristics of a hymn dedicated and devoted to Bellini, together with an original text, created by the participant alone or with the collaboration of others (lyricist), and included into the score. The composition, named after Vincenzo Bellini, should be structured to be suitable for a symphonic orchestra and a mixed chorus made of four voices. Art. 7 It rests on the discretion of the judging committee to assign a certificate of honour to those participants who are judged as praiseworthy by the committee, whose decision is final. Art. 8 The judging committee reserves the right not to assign the prize provided in the present Regulations in the case that the compositions submitted do not reach the required artistic level, or are not clearly referable to the person and the works of Vincenzo Bellini, as judged by the committee through a decision that is final.
Art. 9 The organizers of this prize reserve the right to annul the competition if reasons outside their reach impede its execution; in this instance, participants will be promptly informed and the paid participation fees will be refunded to them. Art. 10 As to any matter which is not provided in these Regulations, it will be left to the discretion of the judging committee. Art. 11 The winner composer has the duty to assign the copyright in his piece of music to the Lions Club Catania Bellini by completing and signing the form (named Liberatoria ) provided at the end of this document.
