RAYMOND J LOCKHART ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WELCOMES YOU TO PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) Raymond J. Lockhart PTA is proud to introduce this year s PARP program TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK PARP is a statewide reading program with a goal of encouraging parents and/or other adults to read with children. Since its beginning in 1978, the PARP program has helped thousands of children discover the joy of reading while improving and expanding their vocabulary, comprehension and imagination. By participating in this year s program you will be encouraging your child to become a life-long reader and learner. It is proven that the children who read regularly at home do better in school. During the program, the children will have an opportunity to participate in games, contests and events, making them eligible to win prizes and recognition. In most cases, there will be one winner per class, plus a surprise will be awarded to each student who participates in the program, BATTER UP!!! Read sign and return the enclosed reading contract, agreeing to read together for at least 15-20 minutes a day. Complete the enclosed reading record with an adult every night you read and return it each Wednesday morning so it may be tallied to your class total minutes read. The class with the most minutes read at the end of the program gets a special surprise! Be sure to return your sheet, surprises will be awarded throughout the program and you have to be in it to win it! Put the PARP calendar on your refrigerator to see what s coming next. Join us tonight, Wed January 23, 2013 at the book fair from 6:30-8:00pm for snacks, face painting, estimation jars, and make your very own bookmark. Come join the fun and get some great books to start scoring with! HELPFUL HINTS: Read different materials such as novels, poems, magazines, newspapers and articles together. Research common interests. Gather facts and information on upcoming events and have a family discussion. Play educational games such as scrabble or trivia.
