Artistic Director Matthew White speaking at EMV s CultureDays event, September 2015 (photo credit Jan Gates) Notes from the Artistic Director Though the music we present at Early Music Vancouver comes from many different historical periods and cultures, the common thread of human expression and creativity can make music written from even our most distant past seem like it was written yesterday. All of the music on our 2016-17 season is designed to disarm and inspire you; if you open your ears, intellect, and spirit, it can be as powerful now as when it was first written. While I am fascinated by facts and history, I believe that live performance is the best tool we have for demonstrating that, though modes of artistic expression change, human nature remains the same. This season sees a number of exciting collaborations, including our first exploration of contemporary music for period instruments as part of the Vancouver Symphony s New Music Festival, two collaborations with Coastal Jazz, and the continuation of our close relationship with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra and Alexander Weimann for a number of large-scale Baroque Masterworks programmes featuring many of our region s best artists. We are thrilled to be returning to Christ Church Cathedral for our first summer Festival centred downtown, as well as for much of our Main Series. The warm acoustics and stunning architectural beauty of the space are a perfect fit for much of the repertoire we present. Seeing our attendance grow so dramatically over the last year has been extremely encouraging. It suggests that there will always be an audience for great music of any era performed by gifted and committed artists. Thanks to José Verstappen for his help in gathering the charming images included in this calendar, and warmest thanks to you, our audience, volunteers, and closest supporters, for transforming EMV into one of the jewels of our region s performing arts scene. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon, Matthew White Executive and Artistic Director Calendar cover image: Melchior de Hondecoeter (1636-1693), The Concert of Birds

Two starkly different genres. In this remarkable project, a baroque ensemble led by JUNO Award-winning harpsichordist/organist Alexander Weimann and a brilliant jazz septet led by trumpeter/composer Alan Matheson explore threads running from the 1600s through today s creative jazz scene. Bringing together disparate musical communities, the two groups will perform works from their respective fields as well as pieces written for the common ground of both. In this timeless Alan Matheson Alexander Weimann meeting place, the long melodic lines of Ellington and Strayhorn echo Handel and Bach, while the endlessly creative practice of theme and variation is a keystone of jazz improvisation, of the Baroque and, one could argue, of life. Known as Le Mozart Noir, he was one of the earliest musicians of the European classical tradition to have African ancestry. Incredibly, this son of a slave overcame adversities of class, race and prejudice to become a major musical star all over Europe and inspired both Mozart and Haydn. Today, he is almost entirely forgotten. This programme includes several of his violin concertos, orchestral works by Mozart and one of Haydn s Paris Symphonies. This concert will be preceded with a screening of a Canadian-made documentary on St. George s life featuring Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. Torn between obedience and conscience, several of England s most talented musicians (Philips, Dering and Dowland) chose a life of exile abroad. Those Catholic composers who remained in England chief amongst them William Byrd and Robert White expressed their spiritual exile in music of astonishing intensity and emotional impact. Anything but antique their sound has the urgency and freshness you get from young voices, and an amazing rhythmic vitality. - The Daily Telegraph The Choir of King s College Cambridge Stephen Cleobury Director of Music Supported by the Alvin S. Nemetz Foundation and by Birgit Westergaard and Norman Gladstone Sunday March 26, 2017 at 2:00 pm Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road, UBC campus) The Choir of King s College, Cambridge is undoubtedly one of the world s best known choral groups; every Christmas Eve millions of people worldwide tune into A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a service that has been broadcast by the BBC since 19. While the Choir exists primarily to sing the daily services in King s College Chapel, its international fame and reputation, enhanced by an extensive recording catalogue, has led to invitations to perform around the world. Moments of iridescence creating vividness in restraint through the unadorned splendour of this superbly polished vocal sound. Sydney Morning Herald
