WELCOME TO THE NEXT CHAPTER THE 2016 17 SARASOTA OPERA SEASON The 2016 Fall Opera Season From winter getaway to year-round destination for the arts lover, Sarasota Opera s world-class performances have a lot to do with the vibrancy and growth of our community. We are proud to be Verdi s American Home, but we are also ready to achieve new heights in our artistic endeavors. The next chapter in our company s history brings an exciting venture Sarasota Firsts. Each season, we will produce at least one opera never before seen at the Sarasota Opera House. This season, we ll produce three! This Fall, join us for the inaugural Sarasota First production Donizetti s fun-filled opera Don Pasquale. Also, enjoy our Fall Opera Showcase, featuring our best artists singing arias, duets and scenes from your most beloved operas. Round out your Fall experience with the Curtain Raiser Dinner, our Understanding Opera talks, and more. Donizetti s OCTOBER 28, 30 M NOVEMBER 2, 7, 10, 13 M Sarasota First To teach his nephew, Ernesto, a lesson, Don Pasquale wants to marry a young woman and produce an heir. But losing the inheritance would prevent Ernesto and his beloved Norina from being happy together. Dean Burry s A Sarasota Youth Opera Production NOVEMBER 12, 1:30 pm & American Premiere Sarasota Youth Opera will perform this operatic adaptation of the well-known children's book by Canadian icon Pierre Berton. The 2017 Winter Opera Festival Escape the cold of winter to experience the warmth of Puccini s music with Sarasota Opera. By popular demand, our Opera Festival will open with Madama Butterfly a favorite that has captivated audiences for more than a century. You ll also enjoy a Rossini classic, and Sarasota First, Algiers a comedic showcase for mezzo-sopranos from Giulietta Simionato to Cecilia Bartoli and beyond. The winter also brings you two rare gems of the operatic repertoire first, an adaptation of a true story from the French Revolution Carmelites. As a group of Carmelite sisters pay the ultimate price for their unwavering faith, you ll hear some of the most glorious harmonies by French composer Francis Poulenc in this Sarasota First production. Then, opera s most sensual thriller Kings will keep you on the edge of your seat as you follow a blind king s resolve to catch his son s wife in an extra-marital affair. Puccini s FEBRUARY 11, 16, 19 M, 22, 25, 28 MARCH 5 M, 10, 17, 21, 25 From her little house on a hill overlooking the Nagasaki port, with a little boy at her side, Butterfly awaits the return of her beloved. Three years earlier, at the tender age of fifteen, she married Pinkerton, a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, and now he s back to break her heart. Filled with Puccini s most expansive melodies, Madama Butterfly is at the top of a very short list of most performed and best loved operas of all times. Rossini s FEBRUARY 18, 21, 23, 26 M MARCH 3, 8, 18, 25 M Sarasota First Lindoro s attempts to escape Mustafà, the Bey of Algiers, have all been in vain. To top it off, he is now faced with a hand-me-down bride instead of his missing beloved, Isabella. But a unique turn of events brings Isabella right where she needs to be to save her lost fiancé. And she knows exactly how to get them out of this bind. Poulenc s MARCH 4, 7, 12 M, 15, 18 M, 24 Sarasota First During the French Revolution s infamous Reign of Terror, follow the story of Blanche de la Force as she dedicates her life to God s service by joining a Carmelite order. As the story unfolds, the revolution threatens to destroy all that s most sacred to the nuns. Blanche s journey will lead her to learn the true meaning of faith. Montemezzi s MARCH 11, 14, 16, 19 M, 22, 26 M One of opera s most passionate stories has music to match in this early 20th century masterpiece. Forced to marry Manfredo, the son of the man who conquered her country, Princess Fiora s heart belongs to Avito. The two lovers have been meeting in secret, but they are playing a dangerous game, as the blind King Archibaldo grows suspicious. All opera performances take place at The William E. Schmidt Opera Theatre, Sarasota Opera House. Opera matinee performances start at 1:30 pm, and are marked with a superscript M.
