The UK Book Publishing Industry in Statistics 2014 1 UK publishers total sales of digital and physical books The invoiced value of UK publisher sales of physical and digital books fell 2% in 2014 to 3.3bn with a 2% decrease in physical book sales and despite a 11% growth in digital sales. 3 Home (UK) physical book market The value of the UK physical book market in 2014, at end purchaser prices, is estimated to have been 3.0bn. Purchases of physical books fell by 3% by value and 4% by volume. Ebook sales share increased to 30% of all book sales. 3.3 Library expenditure on books The following table provides expenditure on physical books by the British Library, public libraries, university and higher education college libraries and the school library service (although the there is no update for the latter). Unfortunately there are no statistics for specialist libraries (i.e. libraries in commercial/industrial or non-commercial organisations) and no up to date figures on school library service. 4.3 Number of VAT-based book publishers by Government Office Regions The largest number of book publishers are located in London (585) in 2013/14 followed by the South East (445), East (250) and South West (240). 1.5.1 Sales of Top Five Translated Authors in UK In 2014, according to Nielsen, the author Jo Nesbo, claimed the top spot for translated authors for the fourth consecutive year.
