Technical Data Sheet 3 Scotchlite Reflective Material Series 6100 High Gloss Trim Series 6200 High Gloss Film Technical Data Sheet August 1999 Description 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - High Gloss is designed to enhance the visibility of the wearer, in daytime, nighttime, or low-light conditions. 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - Series 6200 High Gloss Film consists of highly retroreflective microprisms formed on flexible, glossy, and UV-stabilized polymeric film. A white flexible film sealed on the backside of the 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - Series 6100 High Gloss Trim encapsulates the microprisms and protects the reflective product from dirt and moisture penetration. Fluorescent red-orange and fluorescent lime-yellow high gloss colors are conspicuous under daytime conditions, particularly at dawn or dusk. Color Product Number Daytime Color Reflected Color 6160 or 6260 White White 6183 or 6283 Orange Orange 6184 or 6284 Green Green 6185 or 6285 Blue Blue 6186 or 6286 Fluorescent Red red-orange 6187 or 6287 Fluorescent Yellow lime-yellow 6188 or 6288 Yellow Yellow 6189 or 6289 Red Red Retroreflective Performance The coefficient of retroreflection (R A, in cd/lux/m 2 ) is measured by methods traceable to either of the following retroreflective intensity testing procedures: ASTM E809 and E810 (R A ) CIE 54: 1982 (R ) The R A values were measured at the listed specific entrance and observation angles. The R A values are averages of readings taken from orientation angles that are 90 degrees apart unless stated differently. The 0 orientation angle is to be taken as downweb of 3M supplied rolls. Please contact your 3M representative for the proposed specifications. Color Specifications The initial chromaticity coordinates for 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - Series 6100 High Gloss Trim and 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - Series 6200 High Gloss Film with a white backing, as measured in accordance with ASTM E1164-94, are within the color boxes defined below: 6160 & 6260 White x 0.303 0.368 0.340 0.274 y 0.287 0.353 0.380 0.316 6183 & 6283 Orange x 0.550 0.630 0.581 0.516 y 0.360 0.370 0.418 0.394 6184 & 6284 Green x 0.007 0.248 0.177 0.026 y 0.703 0.409 0.362 0.399 6185 & 6285 Blue x 0.144 0.244 0.190 0.066 y 0.030 0.202 0.247 0.208 6186 & 6286 Fluorescent red-orange x 0.610 0.535 0.570 0.655 y 0.390 0.375 0.340 0.344 6187 & 6287 Fluorescent lime-yellow x 0.387 0.356 0.398 0.460 y 0.610 0.494 0.452 0.540 6188 & 6288 Yellow x 0.498 0.557 0.479 0.438 y 0.412 0.442 0.520 0.472 6189 & 6289 Red x 0.655 0.569 0.595 0.690 y 0.345 0.341 0.315 0.310 Performance While use of 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material enhances visibility, no reflective material can guarantee absolute visibility, particularly in adverse weather conditions. Performance will vary depending upon actual use, exposure condition and maintenance. Users should test reflective material to satisfy conformance to their own requirements. Application Instructions Whenever two or more pieces of Scotchlite reflective material - series 6100 high gloss trim and Scotchlite reflective material - series 6200 high gloss film are used together on a single surface or as a set, they should be matched to ensure uniform color and reflectivity. Sewing to Fabrics: Sew in place with no more than 8 stitches per inch (2.54 cm), and not less than 1/8 (3mm) from the edge of the material. Thread recommendation: 100% polyester. To reduce sticking, apply a non-stick material (e.g., silicone or nylon) to the bottom of the presser foot. Welding to Fabrics: Scotchlite reflective material - series 6100 high gloss trim and Scotchlite reflective material - series 6200 high gloss film are composed primarily of vinyl materials and will weld suitably to most PVC films with any of the following methods: radio frequency (RF), high frequency (HF), dielectric, or ultrasonic. Adhesion to specific films will vary with the lubricants, pigments, plasticizers, and fillers used to make the PVC film. It is important for the user to test adhesion with each new lot and new vendor. RF Sealing: The most widely used method of sealing is RF. It has the advantage of being able to handle patches and trims using a step-and-repeat

process. This allows for the equipment to be used for a wide range of uses at a very economical price. Typically the price for this equipment will range from $20,000 to $50,000. For more information, please refer to our 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material High Gloss Film Application Guide for Welding. Screen Printing: Below are several inks that can be used for printing on top of the vinyl surface of 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - Series 6100 High Gloss Trim and 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - Series 6200 High Gloss Film. All inks should be continuously tested to ensure acceptable adhesion in the event of changes occurring in the manufacturing process or composition of the ink. Prior to printing, wiping the surface with a soft cloth lightly dampened with alcohol may help ink adhesion. This polyester liner can be removed either before or after the RF sealing process, but before sewing or screen printing. NOTE: Scotchlite reflective material - series 6200 high gloss film does not require a sealing film to be retroreflective. However, we do recommend the application of a sealing film to keep out dirt and water that could result in decreased reflectivity. NOTE: Dyes may migrate when placed in direct contact with vinyl and some fabrics. Prior to application, Scotchlite reflective material - series 6100 high gloss trim and Scotchlite reflective material - series 6200 high gloss film must be kept separate and should be tested for dye migration. Care and Maintenance Instructions Important: Test each application according to appropriate care instructions required for the finished product. Actual life of Scotchlite reflective material - series 6100 high gloss trim and Scotchlite reflective material - series 6200 high gloss film depends on cleaning method and wear conditions.
