EDUCATION IS AT THE HEART OF OUR MISSION SBIFF s mission is to engage, enrich and inspire people through the power of film. We celebrate the art of cinema and provide impactful educational experiences for our local, national, and global communities. Your participation in the gala helps provide underserved communities the opportunity to experience the power of film. 10-10-10 Filmmaking & Screenwriting Mentorship Program 10-10-10 brings together student screenwriters, student filmmakers and industry professionals to encourage the next generation of filmmakers. Students are mentored through the various stages of production over a period of five months as they create 10 films that are shown at the annual Film Festival. Since its inception in 2004, 10-10-10 has given a public forum to hundreds of student emerging screenwriters and filmmakers, and generated a wealth of original creative work. AppleBox Family Films Screening on the weekend mornings of the Festival, AppleBox provides FREE family oriented programming for film lovers of all ages. Audiences are treated to a film as well as popcorn and refreshments completely free of charge. Launched in 2007 with only 200 attendees, AppleBox has since grown to nearly 6,000. Open to anyone on a first come first served basis, this program provides a fun, supportive environment to families whose income level may not otherwise allow them access to the movies. Mike s Field Trip to the Movies Mike s Field Trip to the Movies educates 4,000 elementary school students of Santa Barbara County. Founded by the late acclaimed nature cinematographer Mike degruy and SBIFF s Executive Director Roger Durling, Mike s Field Trip to the Movies explores how to use the art of filmmaking to stimulate creative, confident and culturally aware thinkers and empower students and teachers with a creative approach to education. To guarantee that underserved populations experience this opportunity, SBIFF provides FREE transportation to students from Title I schools. Film Camp Film Camp is held over a course of 5-days (overnight) at Camp Whittier, a 55-acre site nestled among the hills of the Los Padres National Forest. Film Camp, in partnership with the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County, is offered at no expense to 30 young people from all of Santa Barbara County. Participants spend a week learning about film analysis and film making, including making their very own short film shown to friends and family on the final day and during the annual Festival. Film Studies Program The Film Studies Program (FSP) is a three-day symposium designed for undergraduate students pursuing a film degree. The main goal of FSP is to provide participants real world experience, while developing their analytical skills. 30 students from top schools around the country and 30 students from local colleges participate in this immersive learning experience. Rosebud Rosebud provides local college students a truly unique learning experience not available anywhere else in Santa Barbara. Ten students receive access to SBIFF s Cinema Society screenings and Q&As, attend a film analysis class taught by Roger Durling, and receive study guides prior to each screening. They also have the option to include a research component and receive units through Roger Durling s Independent Study Course at SBCC. Silver Screenings Created in partnership with Easy Lift Transportation, SBIFF has developed a program that offers FREE transportation, socialization and a fun, inspiring movie experience to groups of ambulatory, transit-dependent seniors.
