There was a large iron gate and a smooth road leading to the Squire's house and gardens. Behind this lay the stables. My stable was very roomy. A large window opened into the yard and that made it airy and pleasant. It had a low shelf for hay and corn. My room was called a loose box, because the horse in it could move about freely. The groom, John Manly, put me into this fine box. He gave me some very nice oats, patted me, spoke kindly and went away. When I had eaten my corn, I looked round.
