Building Bridges and Transforming Lives through the Power of Music International Festival of Bands Pamplona, Spain :: June 12-16, 2019

THE SETTING THE HISTORY OF WIND MUSIC IN THE PROVINCE OF NAVARRA In geographical terms, Navarra is the most diverse province in Spain as it encompasses three different bio-geographical areas and two official languages, Spanish and Basque. The band tradition is a fundamental part of cultural heritage in this region, in a large part due to the regions love for fiesta s and also to give locals access to rich and diverse music activities. Major investment has been made in the past several years to improve and enrich cultural infrastructures with the opening of El Baluarte auditorium and congress center. The region is filled with excellent conservatories such as Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra founded in 1956 as the Municipal Academy of Music of Pamplona. THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF BANDS This International Festival of bands is a week long non-competitive event established to celebrate the centenary of La Pamplonesa, Pamplona s municipal music band. The event will include concerts in top-notch venues, such as the Teatro Gayarre and the El Baluarte auditorium as well as outdoor stages at Town Hall Square and Plaza del Castillo. There will be ample opportunity to meet with bands from Europe and South America, attend workshops with prominent international conductors and composers and enjoy the hospitality of the Navarra region. THE ORGANIZERS :: Perform International Building Bridges and Transforming Lives through the Power of Music Boldly informed by the belief that music inherently speaks as an expression of the human spirit beyond borders and in all cultures, Perform International seeks to empower music directors and ensembles to realize meaningful and life-changing immersion experiences and performances around the world. We empower music directors, music ensembles and individual musicians to share and grow in their artistic expression and understanding of people and cultures. We design and create rewarding performances as well as educational and cultural immersion opportunities by building and maintaining relationships with domestic and international musicians and music education organizations. We partner with concert venues, publicity teams, airlines, hotels, and tour guides to plan and implement operational methods that enhance rather than distract from the artistic experience. We provide meaningful and life-changing performance tour experiences that are personal, thoughtful, and efficient in the processes of conceptual artistic and educational development.

FACULTY JERRY JUNKIN :: Artistic Advisor Jerry F. Junkin serves as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Dallas Wind Symphony, as well as Director of Bands and the Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also holds the title of University Distinguished Teaching Professor. In 2003 he was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia. The New York Times named the recent release on the Reference Recordings label with Jerry Junkin and The University of Texas Wind Ensemble, Bells for Stokowski, one of the best classical CDs of 2004. Professor Junkin became conductor of The University of Texas Wind Ensemble in the fall of 1988, following an appointment as Director of Bands at the University of South Florida. In addition to his responsibilities as Professor of Music and Conductor and Music Director of the UT Wind Ensemble, he serves as Head of the Conducting Division and teaches courses in conducting and wind band literature. He is a recipient of the Texas Excellence in Teaching awards, presented annually by the Ex-Student s Association. Jerry Junkin became the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Dallas Wind Symphony in the fall of 1993. Performances under the direction of Mr. Junkin have won the praise of such notable musicians as John Corigliano, David Del Tredici, Gunther Schuller, Karel Husa, William Kraft, Jacob Druckman and Michael Colgrass, among many others. In February of 2005 he led The University of Texas Wind Ensemble in the world premiere performance of Corigliano s Circus Maximus: Symphony No. 3, in both Austin and New York s Carnegie Hall. Maintaining an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician and lecturer, Mr. Junkin has appeared in those capacities in forty-eight states and on five continents. In 2005 he was presented the Grainger Medallion by the International Percy Grainger Society. KERRY TAYLOR :: Artistic Advisor Kerry Taylor currently serves as Director of Bands for Westlake High School and Fine Arts Director of Eanes ISD. Under Mr. Taylor s direction, the Westlake High School Band has been named Best in Class or Runner-up at the Buccaneer Music Festival, South Coast Music Festival, MusicFest (Orlando, Fl.) and the DC Festival in San Antonio and made concert tours to the Pacific Northwest, Canada and the British Isles. Under Mr. Taylor s baton, the Westlake Wind Ensemble has performed twice (2002 and 2015) at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the American Bandmasters Association on March 4, 2006 and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles on July 8, 2009. INVITATION FROM THE MAYOR OF PAMPLONA,-,,., : 1), untamiento de.. Pamplona Irmi.eko Udala. Area de Gobierno Transparente. Direcci6n de Gabinete de Alcaldfa y Protocolo Gobe, 1111 Gardeneko /\lorra Alkatetza l<abineteko eta Protokoloko Zuzendaritza June 30, 2017 Joseba Asiron Saez To whom it may concern, On behalf of the city of Pamplona, I would like to extend a warm welcome to invited bands from the USA, coming to partake in IFOBand (International Festival of Bands) PAMPLONA, celebrating the centenary of the Pamplona Band, "La Pamplonesa ", from the 12 th to 16 th of June 2019. Founded in 1919, La Pamplonesa is Pamplona's municipal music band and plays a major role in all the city's official festivals, as well as an active schedule of concerts throughout the year. Annually, they help welcome the Three Wise Men in the parade on January 5th, set the mood for Holy Week and, of course, keeps things lively and festive during Los San Fermines. This International Festival of bands is a non-competitive event and will include concerts in topnotch venues, such as the Teatro Gayarre and the El Baluarte auditorium as well as outdoor stages at Town Hall Square and Plaza del Castillo. There will be ample opportunity to meet with bands from Europe, attend workshops with prominent international conductors and composers and enjoy the hospitality of the Navarra region. While Pamplona has achieved international notoriety thanks to Ernest Hemingway's fascination with and descriptions of the thrilling Running of the Bulls in his novels, this otherwise tranquil city is without a doubt much more than the edge-of-your-seat, bull dashing frenzy that often seems to define it. The winding streets of the compact city center not only host the clamoring bulls for one week each July, but are also home to plenty of history, architectural treasures, pretty plazas, quaint shops and delightful cafes. I sincerely hope that you will consider this opportunity to join us for IFOB PAMPLONA and would like to extend my personal welcome to you and your ensemble.
