Introduction The Martin-Gropius-Bau is an international exhibition hall which attracts more than 500.000 visitors every year. With its temporary exhibitions, its central location and its special ambiance reminding Italian palazzi, the Martin-Gropius-Bau is one of Berlin s most beautiful buildings. Besides exhibitions the house offers exclusively rooms for rental. It can be rented for events, gala dinners, stand-up receptions, meetings, conferences, series of lectures, movie screenings, readings or discussions. The brochure gives you an overview of the available event areas. 2
History The architects Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden originally built the house in the Renaissance style as an arts and crafts museum. It was ceremoniously opened in 1881. The Museum of Prehistory and Early History and the East Asian Art Collection moved into the building after the First World War, while the arts and crafts collection was transferred to the City Palace (Stadtschloss). The building was severely damaged in 1945 during the last weeks of World War II. Only in the year 1966 it was classified as a historical monument. The reconstruction began in 1978 under the direction of the architects Winnetou Kampmann and Ute Weström. State Parliament of Berlin, Martin-Gropius-Bau The house was named after Martin Gropius, a great uncle of Walter Gropius, who strongly urged that the museum should be rebuilt. Since its meticulous restoration in the 1980s the Martin- Gropius-Bau has become one of the most famous and most beautiful exhibition halls in Germany. The house was further restored in 1999/2000 with funding from the federal government. Airconditioning was installed and the north entrance was redesigned as the main entrance. The architectural office of Hillmer & Sattler & Albrecht was in charge of the reconstruction. Today, more than 500.000 visitors are enjoyed by the exhibitions in the Martin-Gropius- Bau year after year. Sensational exhibitions such as Hokusai - Retrospective (2011), Dennis Hopper The Lost Album. Vintage Photographs of the 1960s (2012), Kapoor in Berlin (2013, Ai Weiwei Evidence or David Bowie (2014) have made the Martin- Gropius-Bau one of the world s leading exhibition venues. Extraordinary theme exhibitions on cultural history and spectacular archaeological exhibitions featuring the latest research results along with art and photography are the main pillars of the program of the Martin-Gropius- Bau. In the centre of attention are outstanding artist biographies as well as current positions. Museums all over the world, national institutions and private lenders open up their treasuries mostly for the first and only time and send their most important works to Berlin. Andreas Nachama 3
