Dear students, I am so excited to work with you very soon. I love our music, and I hope you are enjoying working on it. I hope the detailed notes below are helpful in your preparation. Having the right notes, rhythms, cut offs, pronunciations, etc are only the basic things you should have prepared. For us to make magic and for the music to come alive, please come ready to learn and to have fun! Cheers to you! Dr. Yu ****** General Notes: Basses: Any time your note goes below C3, you can count on the dynamic being at least mf even if the marking is otherwise. If we have a very naturally low sounding bass section we will adjust, but I want you to feel like you can sing these notes fully as I prefer a full bass/alto sound. For solo auditions, students should come prepared (please don t decide to audition on site). There are too many students to consider so students should not audition unless they can demonstrate vocal and dramatic expertise on the selections. Students may only get to sing 2-4 measures of a solo for the final audition - so they are encouraged to make the most out of the short amount they have to present. It Takes a Village Imagination/Inspiration words: joyous, bright, dance inspired, community We will use a variety of timbres on this song. Fuller dynamic sections will be much brighter. Non-text sections such as hé hé hé yah hé and mm ah mm ah will have both dark and light vowels. Students are encouraged to play with vocal colors and vowel shapes in preparation. Szymko is very specific with cutoffs and no-breath carry throughs. If there is a rest in the middle of a phrase, the singer should carry the energy through the silence (not let the momentum drop). On long phrases such as the mm ah mm ah sections, please stagger breathe until the rests. The best challenge of this song is the gradual expansion and building of excitement in the steady rise of measures 45-76. Students should practice individually to build anticipation so when the village comes together it is very organic and thrilling. Soloists chosen will show great charisma visually as well as vocally
