Dear students, I am so excited to work with you very soon. I love our music, and I hope you are enjoying working on it. I hope the detailed notes below are helpful in your preparation. Having the right notes, rhythms, cut offs, pronunciations, etc are only the basic things you should have prepared. For us to make magic and for the music to come alive, please come ready to learn and to have fun! Cheers to you! Dr. Yu ****** General Notes: Basses: Any time your note goes below C3, you can count on the dynamic being at least mf even if the marking is otherwise. If we have a very naturally low sounding bass section we will adjust, but I want you to feel like you can sing these notes fully as I prefer a full bass/alto sound. For solo auditions, students should come prepared (please don t decide to audition on site). There are too many students to consider so students should not audition unless they can demonstrate vocal and dramatic expertise on the selections. Students may only get to sing 2-4 measures of a solo for the final audition - so they are encouraged to make the most out of the short amount they have to present. It Takes a Village Imagination/Inspiration words: joyous, bright, dance inspired, community We will use a variety of timbres on this song. Fuller dynamic sections will be much brighter. Non-text sections such as hé hé hé yah hé and mm ah mm ah will have both dark and light vowels. Students are encouraged to play with vocal colors and vowel shapes in preparation. Szymko is very specific with cutoffs and no-breath carry throughs. If there is a rest in the middle of a phrase, the singer should carry the energy through the silence (not let the momentum drop). On long phrases such as the mm ah mm ah sections, please stagger breathe until the rests. The best challenge of this song is the gradual expansion and building of excitement in the steady rise of measures 45-76. Students should practice individually to build anticipation so when the village comes together it is very organic and thrilling. Soloists chosen will show great charisma visually as well as vocally

Praise Ye the Lord of Hosts (sing in Latin - Tollite Hostias) Imagination/Inspiration words: regal, elegant, dignified Please flip all r s and use dental t s We will honor most commas and all periods as lift points. Measures referenced below are numbered straight through as if there were no repeats. For the honor choir we will take all repeats though. o Here are the measure numbers for the first measure of each staff on the page: Page 1 1, 5 Page 2 10, 14 Page 3 18, 23 Page 4 28, 32 o Breath/lift instructions: M. 2 - quarter note rest on beat 4 (place s lightly) M. 4-5 - no group breath M. 6-7 - no group breath M. 10 - no group breath M. 12 - quarter note rest on beat 4 M. 14 - no group breath M. 15 - beat 1 should be changed to an 8th note for all parts M. 17 (2nd ending) - SAB should carry over as written to beat 4. Tenors should change beat 1 to an 8th note M. 18-27 - the final ya of alleluia should be handled delicately with a softer dynamic and changed to an 8th note (if a quarter note) M. 20 (tenors) and M. 25 (soprano alto) - release on the tied over quarter note M. 29 - beat 3 should be changed to an 8th note for all parts M. 31 - quarter note rest on beat 4 M. 33 - beat 1 should be changed to an 8th note for all parts M. 34 - beat 1 should be changed to an 8th note for all parts M. 33 to end - watch the conductor (ritardando) Stars I Shall Find Imagination/Inspiration words: flexible, poetic, pliant, delicate Rubato will be used throughout this piece. Breath/lift instructions: o M. 6 (and every successive time after the word rest ) no group breath - please carry across o M. 30 - no group breath - please carry across Tell My Father Imagination/Inspiration words: devoted, vulnerable, respect

Rubato will be used throughout this piece. If there is a rest in the middle of a sentence/phrase, the singer should carry the energy through the silence (not let the momentum drop). Arirang Imagination/Inspiration words: longing, pining Pronunciation o Please flip all r s o M. 14 - please pronounce as goh geh rll (the last syllable doesn t have a stressed vowel - it is an unaccented schwa) o M. 17-24 - please pronounce as nah rll (see note directly above) buh ri goh gah shi n-n ni mn. shim ri doh mot ga suh bahl byung nahn dah. o If students would prefer to prepare the Korean on a neutral vowel, I would LOVE to teach the Korean correctly on site. It s very easy to learn. I would prefer this to having to break incorrect habits. Breath/lift instructions: o M. 12 - beat 3 should be changed to an 8th note o M. 16 - beat 3 should be changed to a quarter note o M. 20-21 - no group breath o M. 38 - beat 3 should be changed to an 8th note o M. 42 - beat 3 should be changed to a quarter note o M. 46 - beat 3 should be changed to an 8th note o M. 55 - beat 3 should be changed to an 8th note The Pasture Imagination/Inspiration words: stillness, peace, simplicity, nature, honest Rubato will be used throughout this piece. If there is a rest in the middle of a sentence/phrase, the singer should carry the energy through the silence (not let the momentum drop). Worthy to be Praised Imagination/Inspiration words: joyous, praise, exuberance always checked There are 2 distinct styles in this song: o M. 1-10; M. 50-53 - A still, full chorus o All the other sections - Full gospel chorus The gospel sections will be much more detached than the more chorale style sections. The soloists on p. 8-10 may be male or female. Students should use their best gospel style on the solo. Rhythms and pitches may be altered stylistically (but need to stay in the groove and in time). Breath/lift instructions: o M. 2 - beat 3 should be changed to a quarter note o M. 4 - beat 3 should be changed to a quarter note o M. 6 - no group breath - please carry across o M. 13 - beat 2 should be changed to a half note (place st on beat 4) o M. 21 - breathe on beat 4
