PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Happy New Year to all of our Manitoba Orff Chapter Members!!! I hope you had a restful and relaxing holiday with family and friends. Let s take a look at MOC events from the past few months and new events coming up. September s Make n Take workshop was very popular and the participants came away with some very creative ideas for keeping our students engaged in the classroom with fun activities. The MOC/WSO listening workshop with Marcelline Moody in October was amazing. Marcelline has decided to retire and will no longer be the creative mind for the WSO Musical Discoveries and Adventures in Music Programs. We wish Marcelline all the best in her retirement. For those who attended TEMPO 2015 and MOC s Fall Fiesta with Artie Almeida, we received wonderful and exciting ideas to use in our classrooms. Artie was very impressed the dedication of the MOC membership and board. We held our AGM during Fall Fiesta and we were very excited to introduce a new Board of Directors for the term of 2015-2017. The new Board of Directors for MOC are: Jewel Casselman, Amanda Ciavarelli, Stephanie Davis, Jen Gillis, Jordanna Dunk, Laura Anderson, Charisse Wurch, Purnakama Rajna, Matt Funk, Brittany Goulet, Angie Tester, Lori Arthur, Kristi Grunsten-Yonda, Dawn Muir & Kelsey Reimer. It is wonderful to have two rural board members, Angie and Brittany, as it is important for MOC to reach out to everyone in Manitoba. These two board members will be a wonderful liaison between the rural and city members. serving with MOC. These board members have been very dedicated to keeping Orff alive and thriving in Manitoba. Thankyou to Sean Fitzmaurice, Kati Lapp, Courtney Dufault, Shannon Moses, Ruth Reimer, and Jenna-lynn Fraser for your dedication to MOC. On February 6, 2016 MOC presented our annual Winter Workshop featuring Sue Harvey from Calgary. She was a wonderful and exciting presenter who inspired all of the participants to have F-U-N with our students presenting many fun and educational activities. The 2016 Children s Day will be held in Winnipeg on April 20 (English), April 21 (French), and in Brandon on April 25 (English). Our excellent clinicians will be presenting sessions in Basic Orff, Movement, Recorder, and Choral. Registrations forms are available on our website. Bridges 2016, the National Orff Conference will be held April 28 May 1, 2016 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Registration is now open and available on our website. Let s see a large number of Manitoba Orff Chapter members representing our province at this conference. I am very excited about being the president for MOC. ADVOCACY WHERE DO I BEGIN? Understanding why we need to advocate is not the hard part, it is the Where do I begin? that can be a little more difficult to figure out. I would like to share the following with you: 1. Advocacy begins with YOU It is important for us to always be advancing ourselves and looking for new ideas. You can get started by taking opportunities to network with fellow music educators, and take part in music workshops and events. Here is a list of MOC and COC events and groups to get you started: - Children s Day Winnipeg o English- April 20 2016. o French- April 21 2016. - April is Music Month. Celebrate music in your schools and communities. - Manitoba Legislature. - Children s Day Brandon o April 25 2016. - Bridges- COC National Conference o April 28- May 1 in Saskatoon. - Music Monday is May 2. Look for lists of events happening around you or celebrate with your own school assembly and musical performances. - Join MOC on Facebook and Instagram. 2. Advocacy occurs daily with your STUDENTS Our students are our biggest audience for advocacy. When children get excited about music they will go home and tell their parents and family members all about it. And most importantly, it will stick with them for the rest of their lives. 3. Advocacy with the PARENTS There are many other ways we can provide information to the parents of our students: - Write articles and post pictures in your school newsletters. 3 - Create a class website or link on your school website for the latest in music. - Put Orff information slips into report cards. - Have students bring their parents through an Orff activity during parent/teacher interview times. - Engage parents with audience participation during concerts. Have them experience Orff first hand! 4. Advocacy with CO-WORKERS and your PRINCIPAL Some ways of reaching the staff at your school: - Have staff learn a piece for a concert or talent show. - Invite teachers, EA s, Principals, secretaries, etc. into your class to see mini performances. - Have EA s or other staff in your classes take part in activities with the students. They ll have tons of fun doing it! - Inform your principal of workshops you want to attend and the importance of them. Explain Orff to them so they understand it. - Wellness day for staff?? Offer to lead them through a fun filled Orff lesson as part of the day. 5. Advocacy in the COMMUNITY Get word out to the community around you: - Have the local newspaper come do an article on a cool musical lesson or performance. - Invite public figures like your Mayor into your school. - Perform at a nearby retirement home. MOC MAKE N TAKE I am a huge Pinterest fan and if you followed me you would see that I have dozens of cool music centre ideas pinned on my wall. Unfortunately, due simply to life and living, very few of these ideas have actually made their way into my classroom. That s why I look forward to MOC s Make n Take each year. It is a fun, two and a half-hour event that features four creative music educators bringing their own student-approved ideas to share. The MOC board brings supplies for everyone to create their own manipulatives during the event and by the end of the evening I have four very diverse activities that I can take directly to my classroom! The evening is made complete through casual conversations where ideas are freely shared and by taking a break to enjoy pizza together. This years Make n Take was held on September 15th at Lakewood Elementary School in St. James. Jordanna Cornish presented Huddle-Up! a sports-themed centre utilizing simple dollar store toys, proven to be a hit with athletic-minded students! Karen Tole-Henderson brought us Nuts n Bolts Rhythms, using actual metal nuts and bolts, making this a fantastic tactile (and indestructible!) rhythmic learning centre. Mary-Lynn Berti demonstrated how a Movement Ball featuring movement words and phrases could have a multiple number of energizing uses in our classrooms, and Kati Lapp brought us Sunk!, a rhythm fishing game featuring differentiated rhythmic patterns, making this a fun centre perfect for all ages and abilities. MOC/WSO LISTENING WORKSHOP WITH MARCELLINE MOODY The Manitoba Orff Chapter, along with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, was pleased to present the annual MOC/WSO Listening Workshop with Marcelline Moody this past October 2015. In the evening on Thursday, October 1, 2105 participants enjoyed engaging in activities that they could take back to their classrooms to help guide their students through the process of learning about the repertoire for this year s Musical Discoveries concerts. This year s repertoire list included March Past of the Kitchen Utensils, a delightful march composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. To help students better understand the form of the piece, Marcelline suggested using large cut-outs of kitchen utensils that moved during their own specific sections. She also orchestrated an accessible Orff arrangement of the music that could be used in the classroom. On Friday, October 2, 2015, participants were inspired by a full day of lessons, Orff arrangements, recorder pieces, movement ideas, and strategies to guide students through the process of learning about the repertoire for this year s Adventures in Music concert series. This year s concert is made up of music from around the world and is based on the theme of Orchestral Games as the 2016 Summer Olympics are taking place in Brazil later this year. The repertoire selection is wonderful and includes music from a range of places, time periods, and styles. The repertoire includes a piece from Brazil by André Filho called Cidade Maravilhosa, which translates as beautiful city. The piece was written for the Rio de Janeiro carnival in 1935 and has since become the anthem for that city. This workshop was repeated in Brandon on Monday, October 5, 2015. As always, it is difficult to express the vast amount of inspiration, excitement, and knowledge that Marcelline shared with us over the two days and one evening of workshops. Marcelline has been the creative genius behind the WSO Education Music Programs for the past 20 seasons. She is a mastermind of creativity and finding the small nuances in the music that help the teachers and students come to a thorough understanding of the music that the WSO presents at these concerts. We have worked through her explanations and completed the activities with our students so they have a solid understanding of the music and can enjoy this music at a more intellectual level during the concerts. Marcelline has made the decision that she is retiring from the WSO s Musical Discoveries and Adventures in Music programs. She has left a legacy of amazing lessons, memories of students playing recorder, doing dances and movements, choirs singing and much more. She will be missed each October as MOC presents the WSO workshop in preparation for the next year s concerts. Scholarship and Award Opportunities Helen Neufeld Scholarship Every year, the Manitoba Orff Chapter presents the Helen Neufeld Scholarship to an MOC member that will be taking his or her Level II course during the Orff Summer Levels Courses. The Helen Neufeld Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994 and named in honour of the late Helen Neufeld, an outstanding and inspirational music educator and pioneer of the Orff approach in Manitoba and across Canada. This award is given to the applicant(s) who best exemplifies Helen's commitment to the philosophies of Carl Orff Canada and her passion for music education. To apply, please click HERE. The application deadline is May 13, 2016. Gunild Keetman Award The Gunild Keetman Scholarship was established in 1976 by Music for Children - Carl Orff Canada - Musique pour enfants, to provide annual grants to selected Canadian students or teachers for study at an approved course at a Canadian university. These scholarships are awarded in the spring of each year and are available for all approved Orff Schulwerk courses offered in Canada, summer and winter. Applicants must be members in good standing of Carl Orff Canada, and have successfully completed a Level I Orff course. Click HERE for the application form, as well as the referee form that accompanies the application. Applications may be completed and submitted online. The application deadline is April 15, 2016. MOC Travel Bursary The cost of travel expenses to attend the MOC s Fall Fiesta workshop in Winnipeg, MB. The bursary recipient will receive up to $400 for transportation, meals, accommodation, and/or sub costs incurred to attend Fall Fiesta. RESOURCE REVIEW In each issue of the Manitoba Modes, I ll review some music resources you may want to check out. In this issue, I ll introduce you to Sue Harvie s new book as well as some great choral warm-up books every music teacher should own. Enjoy! If you are looking for some highly engaging, kid-friendly, game-based activities for your music classroom, be sure to check out Sue Harvie s new book: F-U-N n Games Galore. This resource is jam packed with activities that will have your students singing, speaking, playing, dancing, moving, creating, and most importantly having fun! I ve always been a big proponent of keeping music class fun. In addition to having an energetic attitude and positive approach, it s important to teach music using materials that are exciting, energetic, enticing, and engaging. Sue s ideas help me accomplish this goal and her book would be an invaluable resource for any music teacher. Sue Harvie is an elementary music teacher and Orff specialist in Calgary, Alberta. I have had the privilege of attending several of her workshops over the years, and she never fails to present sessions that keep fun at the centre of music teaching and learning. Her zany creations such as Cola Challenge and Secret Agent are a blast to do with your students, but my all-time favourite Sue Harvie lesson is Funky Chicken. My students can t get enough of it! I love that while they are having fun, they are learning about form, creative movement, speech ostinati, and coordination (that cup-passing game is tricky!). I know your students will love it!!! I know you ll discover some wonderfully fun ideas in Sue Harvie s amazing new resource. Congratulations to all the lucky music teachers who had the opportunity to work with Sue recently at MOC s Winter Workshop on Saturday, February 6. We know you all loved this wonderful day of professional development and music making, and walked away with tons of fun activities to bring back to your music classrooms! There are several great warm-up books on the market, and we all have our favourite go-tos when our choir is in front of us. Below are two of my all-time favourite choral warm-up resources. They are essential resources for all choral directors and music educators. If you don t already have them, be sure to get them! The Choral Warm-Up Collection Sally Albrecht, ed. (Alfred) The Choral Warm-up Collection is an incredible resource that contains warm-ups for every situation and focuses on many different vocal areas. This superb sourcebook features 167 favorite warm-ups contributed by 51 choral directors. The text is organized into several categories, including: Beginning Warmups; Breathing; Vowels; Flexibility; Intervals; Intonation; Blend; Phrasing; and Diction. Clear objectives for each exercise are included with practical and time-saving techniques that will ensure success with singers of any age. TECH TIP: INTERACTIVE NOW! BY DEBBIE ANDERSON This addition of Manitoba Modes Tech Tip features Interactive Now! created by Debbie Anderson and Phyllis Thomas. Interactive Now! is a collection of 10 interactive lessons and activities for K-5 music classes which are compatible with SMART Boards and all IWB S. This is the first year that I have had a SMART Board in my classroom and I am absolutely using the interactive Now! lessons. Before I had the SMART Board, I used the activities with a data projector and computer and they worked very well also. So if you don t have a SMART Board yet, and have a data projector, you won t be disappointed! The activities are EXCITING, FUN and VERY EFFECTIVE with students leaving them wanting more and more.
