It is held in remembrance of Isang Yun (1917~1995), the renowned Korean composer, by promoting cultural exchanges among nations through music, and by supporting talented young musicians from all over the world. The Competition is held annually in November, alternating between the disciplines Piano, Violin and Violoncello. 2017 will see the next Violin Competition, while Cello will be held again in 2018. The First prize winner of the last Piano Competition in 2013 was Hong-Gi Kim (Rep. of Korea).

APPLICATION PACKAGE The Competition is open to pianists of any nationality, born between November 1, 1986 and October 31, 2001. Application is only possible online and will be open in June of 2016 at www.isangyuncompetition.org. The complete application including application form and supplemental materials must be uploaded by August 12, 2016(Korea Standard Time). Each application must contain: a. A high-quality video recording containing the works listed under Official Repertoire. All works must be recorded with no audio or visual editing. Tutti cuts are acceptable in all works. Each required piece should be on a single track. Date and place of recording must be indicated, and recordings may not be more than one year old. b. Two letters of recommendation by musical authorities familiar with the applicant s achievement, including one from a recent or current teacher of the applicant. Letters should be in English or Korean, or should include English or Korean translations. c. Biography of the applicant (in English or Korean) d. A scan of the applicant s passport e. A photograph of the applicant in JPG or TIFF format (no less than 1MB) Please note that Applications arriving after 12 August, 2016 cannot be accepted.

ENTRY FEE Applicants who have been selected to participate in the first round of the Competition are required to submit a non-refundable entry fee of KRW 150,000 by September 23, 2016. Music Foundation regarding his/her participation in the competition under the rules and conditions of the Isang Yun Competition. D. TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION Travel expenses within Korea are the responsibility of the participants. International participants will receive free travel to Tongyeong upon passing the preliminary round. Participants passing the preliminary round will be provided with free room and board during their active participation in the competition. All participants must register in person on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Participant Meeting. Foreign nationals requiring a visa in order to enter the Republic of Korea will be provided with the necessary documents upon passing the preliminary round. E. REHEARSALS The competition will provide a number of practice pianos at Tongyeong Concert Hall. Each applicant will have ample practice time during the competition. Prior to the final round, each finalist will have an opportunity to rehearse with the orchestra.

F. PERFORMANCE Lots will be drawn to decide the order in which the participants will perform. The order of performance will remain unchanged until the final round. Only then, the order may be changed for programming reasons. Each participant must be present when the lots are drawn at the Participant Meeting on 29 October 2016. Except for the preliminary round, all rounds of the competition are open to the public. G. PERFORMANCE RIGHTS By submitting an application form, participants give the Isangyun Competition unrestricted rights to broadcast, record, televise, and film their performances during the competition. Any such recordings or broadcasts may be made without compensation to the participant. H. JUDGMENT a. Preliminary round The preliminary jury will make a selection of candidates from the applications received. All applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection by September 12, 2016. b. Public rounds The jury consists of nine internationally recognized jurors. A point system will be used by the Jury for judgment and evaluation. Any juror having taught a participant for more than three months during the past two years must declare such teaching relationship and will abstain from voting on the participant s performances. The decisions of the Jury are final. I. PRIZES Over KRW 60.000.000 in cash prizes will be awarded. First Prize: KRW 30,000,000 Second Prize: KRW 20,000,000 Third Prize: KRW 10,000,000 Seong-Yawng Park Prize: KRW 2.000.000 Isang Yun Price: KRW 2.000.000 The Isang Yun Prize is awarded for the best interpretation of the work Interludium A (1982). The Jury will award all prizes and there will be no ties. Taxes will be deducted from prize money in accordance to Korean tax laws. All prize winners agree to perform at the Winners Concert on November 6. When requested within the next three years, prize winners shall perform at Tongyeong Concert Hall, or at other concerts managed by the Tongyeong International Music Foundation. For such performances, round-trip airfare as well as room and board for a maximum of 7 days will be provided by the competition, but no additional fees will be paid.

J. INTERPRETATION OF THE RULES AND CONDITIONS Should any dispute arise regarding the interpretation of any part of the Rules and Conditions of ISANGYUN Competition 2016, the Rules and Conditions in Korean as well as related laws and codes of the Republic of Korea will be the only legal basis. All decisions made by the competition office and the jury are final.

Official Repertoire All repertoire must be performed from memory, except for works composed after 1950. PRELIMINARY ROUND (25-30 minutes) Digital recording: All applicants recordings must include two works: a) Fréderic Chopin: One Etude b) One solo work of the applicant s choice This work (or several works within the time limit above) may be freely chosen. Work(s) may be performed again at the first round of the competition. FIRST ROUND (35-40 minutes) During the first round, each competitor will be required to perform a), b), and c): a) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ㅣ Joseph Haydn ㅣ Ludwig van Beethoven: one complete Sonata b) Work(s) of the applicant s choice Works performed in the preliminary round may be repeated in this round c) Isang Yun: Fünf Stücke für Klavier (1958) SECOND ROUND (45-50 minutes) During the second round, each participant must perform a) and b): a) Isang Yun: Interludium A für Klavier (1982) OR any work written after 1950 with a minimum duration of 10 minutes b) Work(s) of the applicant s choice music performed in the previous rounds cannot be repeated
