Bridging the Generations Through Music
WHO ARE WE? We are a fifty-five-member symphony orchestra and a twentyfive-member chamber orchestra based in Boca Raton, serving 22 communities in South Florida, from Jupiter to Miami. We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charitable corporation. All contributions to the orchestra are tax deductible in accordance with the amounts allowable by law. WHAT IS OUR MISSION? The mission of the Florida Intergenerational Orchestra (FLIOA) is to bridge the generation gap with music and musical performances. Our unique environment encourages, nurtures and promotes closer relationships between the generations, with musicians currently spanning the ages from 10 to 94 and constantly changing. The Florida Intergenerational Orchestra is divided into two orchestras, the fifty-five-member symphony orchestra, and the smaller twentyfive-member chamber orchestra, that rehearse separately but on occasion perform together. Now in our ninth year, the Florida Intergenerational Orchestra remains Boca Raton s best-kept secret.
ABOUT OUR FOUNDER AND CONDUCTOR Lorraine Marks-Field has enjoyed a distinguished career as a conductor, performer, and teacher in New Jersey and Florida. In New Jersey she was the founder and conductor of the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra which she conducted at various venues, including Lincoln Center in NYC, and in Madrid, Spain at the request of The United Nations. Ms. Marks-Field has received numerous honors for her work, Bridging the Generations Through Music including citations from the United States Senate, House of Representatives, The New Jersey Senate, Palm Beach County and the City of Boca Raton. Most recently the State of Florida honored her and the orchestra by bestowing its first annual Legacy Award. Lorraine and her orchestras have been featured on television, CBS Evening News, Sunday Mornings with Charles Osgood, Windows on America and NBC s Four Stories. The orchestra has been written about extensively in Family Circle, AARP Journal, and other national and local publications. Lorraine was named Unsung Hero in the SunSentinel and was also the recipient of the prestigious Woman of Distinction Award from the Soroptimist International of Boca Raton/Delray Beach.
How Does the Orchestra Function? The orchestra functions primarily through the miracle of volunteerism. Almost all of the orchestra s members, with the exception of an occasional guest artist, volunteer their services to the orchestra. There is a small registration fee that each member contributes to help pay for some of the orchestra s expenses. The conductor volunteers her time and energy. Musicians need not audition to become members of the orchestra. Everyone is welcome. All that is needed is a willingness to attend rehearsals and a love of music. Lorraine Marks-Field somehow manages to weave the collective abilities of the musicians into a common fabric of classical, semi-classical, popular and jazz music. WHAT IS THE VALUE OF HAVING 10 YEAR OLDS PLAYING WITH 90 YEAR OLDS? Each generation has at one time or another complained about the next generation, whether it be generation X, Y, or Z. Kids just don t understand anything, they think they know it all, is a frequently heard lament of the older generations. My parents don t understand me, is what the kids say. When the generations work together on a common project, such as making beautiful music, they come to understand that they have more in common than they would ever have believed. More importantly, in a State such as Florida, and in the general community of South Florida, there is an unusually large population of retirees. Many of these individuals upon retiring feel they are no longer useful members of society. Taking part in an orchestra, whether it is the full 55 member symphony orchestra, or the smaller 25 member chamber orchestra, and helping to mentor younger players gives new meaning to their lives and elevates their importance as members of the community. The younger players benefit from the wisdom of their elders, as well as improving their musical skills. The orchestra provides a venue where grandparents, children, and grandchildren can all work together. The value of the orchestra to the members of the orchestra and the community as a whole is immeasurable.
WHY DOES THE ORCHESTRA NEED ADDITIONAL FUNDING? While the small registration fee the individual members of the orchestra pay helps to defray some of the expenses of the orchestra, we are in need of additional funding to cover the costs of orchestral scores, advertising, storage, printing, mailings, music stands, sound equipment, transportation, lighting, insurance, venue fees, incorporation expenses, and special guest artists. The orchestra also offers scholarships for those with special needs or who are underserved, or simply haven t the funds to pay dues. The orchestra has received small matching grants from IBM, HOME DEPOT, as well as a grant from the Junior League of Boca Raton, The Behar Law Group, BankUnited, as well as assistance from The Art Institute of Ft Lauderdale. The orchestra also welcomes contributions from individuals and lists their names in the showbill of each performance. Contributions are necessary for the orchestra to continue to grow and improve. THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM The orchestra needs additional funding to expand its Mentorship Program which is intended as an outreach program for professional musicians to contribute their experience, knowledge and guidance to our younger musicians.
