READING Groundhog Day Groundhog Day is a national holiday celebrated every year on February 2. Each year, people all over the country wait to see if the groundhog sees his shadow. The tradition started hundreds of years ago when people did not have television or computers to predict the weather. People relied on hibernating animals, such as groundhogs, to predict whether or not spring was on the way. These people believed that if hibernating animals were coming out of their hideaways, spring must be coming soon. The most famous groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil. He lives in Pennsylvania. On February 2, Phil comes out of his burrow. If he sees his shadow, it is believed that winter will last for six more weeks. If he does not see his shadow, many think that winter is coming to an end, and it s time for spring. The groundhog is not always right, but people still wait to see what he will predict. There are celebrations all over the country, and many other states have their own groundhog to predict the weather. Are you ready for spring? 1

READING Presidents Day Are you out of school for Presidents Day? Many children in the United States get the day off in celebration of this important holiday. Each year, Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February. This holiday started in the 1800, a year after George Washington s death. Originally, the holiday was celebrated in honor of George Washington. The month of February was chosen because Washington was born on February 22. He was our nation s first president, and is remembered as a very courageous man who helped found our country. In the 1970 s, people decided that the holiday should include a celebration of Abraham Lincoln s birthday, as well. Lincoln was born on February 12, and was our 16 th president. He was also known to be very brave, and is remembered as the president who helped make our country a better place to live. Because both of these men are so important to our country s history, Presidents Day celebrates both of them. On this day, many children go to parades and learn more about these important people.
