TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS J.S. Bach: The Six Motets Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, BWV 225 Psalm 149:1-3; Psalm 150:2,6; Johann Gramann: Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren, verse 3 (1548) Sing to the Lord a new song 1. Sing to the Lord a new song! Let the congregation of saints praise him. Let Israel rejoice in the one who made him. Let the children of Zion rejoice in their king, let them praise his name with dancing; let them play for him with drums and harps. 2. 3. Chor Lobet den Herrn in seinen Taten, loben ihn in seiner großen Herrlichkeit. Alles was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn, Alleluja! As a father has mercy God, in the future, take us to you, upon his own young little child, so does the Lord do the same on us all, if we, pure and childlike, approach him with awe. He knows his poor creatures, God is aware that we are but dust, for without you all we do amounts to nothing. like the grass that is cut down, a flower, or a falling leaf. The wind has only to blow over it, and it is there no more. Therefore, be our shield and light, and, our hope not deceiving us, you will do so in the future. So also does humankind pass away, the end is near. Happy are they who steadfastly rely on you and your grace. Praise the Lord in his works, praise him in his great glory! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Allelujah! 4

Fear not, for I am with you Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God! I strengthen you, I help you, I uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. Lord, my Shepherd, fount of all joys! You are mine, I am yours, no one can separate us. I am yours, because you gave your life and your blood, for my sake in death. You are mine, for I have embraced you and will never, O my light, let you out of my heart! Let me, let me arrive, where you by me, and I by you shall be embraced in love. Fear not, you are mine! 5

Jesu, meine Freude, BVW 227 Johann Franck: Jesu, meine Freude, verses 1-6 (1653) Romans 8:1,2,9-11 1. Chorale, verse 1 Jesu, meine Freude, meines Herzens Weide, Jesu, meine Zier! 6 Jesus, my joy Jesus, my joy, the pasture of my heart, Jesus, my treasure! Ah, how long, how long must my heart be anxious and full of longing for you! Lamb of God, my bridegroom, besides you, there is on this earth nothing else that is dearer to me. There is now no condemnation in them who abide in Christ Jesus, who walk not following the flesh, but, rather, according to the spirit. Beneath your shield I am safe from the storms free of all enemies. Let Satan thunder, let the enemy become incensed, Jesus stands by me. Even though lightning and thunder surround, even though sin and Hell terrify, Jesus will protect me. For the law of the spirit, which was made living through Christ Jesus, has made me free from the law of sin and death. I defy the old dragon, I defy the jaws of death, I defy the fear they cause!

Dir sei ganz, du Lasterleben, gute Nacht gegeben! Rage, world, and leap forth; I will stand here and sing, confidently, in peace! God s power holds me firmly; earth and the abyss must fall silent, however much they rumble. But you are not of the flesh, but rather of the spirit if, truly, the spirit of God dwells within you. But whoever does not have the Christ s spirit is not his. Away with all treasures, you are my delight, Jesus, my desire! Away, you vain honors, I shall not listen to you; remain unknown to me! Misery, distress, cross, shame and death will never, regardless of how much I suffer, separate me from Jesus. If Christ is in you, then, though your body is dead because of sin; the spirit is alive because of righteousness. Good night, o [earthly] existence, what the world offers does not please me at all. Good night, you sins, remain far behind, come no more into the light! Good night, you arrogance and splendor! To everything you are, you life of wickedness, I bid goodnight! 7

So now, the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead, dwells in you; that very same spirit that raised Christ from the dead makes your mortal bodies living again, that his spirit may dwell in you. Flee away, you spirits of sadness, for the master of my joy, Jesus, enters in. To those whom God loves, even their troubles must be as pure sugar. Here [on earth] I may endure mockery and shame, but, even in my suffering, you remain Jesus, my joy. The Spirit helps us in our weakness The Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know for what we should pray, or what is proper; but the Spirit itself intercedes for us in the best way with sighs too deep for words. However, he who searches our hearts knows what the Spirit's intention is, since the Spirit pleads for the saints in the way that pleases God. You holy fire, sweet comfort, now help us, joyfully and with confidence, to remain steadfast in your service, let not sorrow drive us away. 8

Halleluja, halleluja! Alleluja! O Lord, with your power prepare us and strengthen our feeble flesh, that we might bravely struggle through life and death to reach you. Hallelujah, hallelujah! Come, Jesus, come Come, Jesus, come, my body is weary, the strength fails me more and more, I long for your peace; [life s] bitter path becomes too difficult for me! Come, come, I will surrender myself to you, you are the right way, the truth and the life. Therefore, I place myself in your hands and say to you: world, goodnight! Though my life s course rushes to its end, my spirit is nevertheless well-prepared. It shall soar upward with its Creator, for Jesus is, and remains, the true way to life. Praise the Lord, all nations Praise the Lord, all nations, and praise Him, all peoples! For his grace and truth rules over us for eternity. Alleluja! Translations by Gerald Sousa Bloomington Chamber Singers, 2016 9

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Thank you for joining us this evening for our concert of music by Johann Sebastian Bach. A performance such as this could not happen without the support of many organizations, businesses, and dedicated people. We thank the Indiana Arts Commission for their continued support. Our appreciation goes to the Unitarian Universalist Church and St. Mark s United Methodist Church for their generous sharing of space for our rehearsals. Special thanks go to First Presbyterian Church for allowing us to perform in their beautiful sanctuary twice this season, and to Sadie Carter for her kind assistance. Our organization is managed by a hard-working board of directors as well as many other volunteer members. Our concert manager, Stephanie Johnson, has worked countless hours preparing for this evening, as have Jan Allen, Ben Johnson, David Rohlfing, Jason Wadsworth, and Bernie Zoss. Great thanks go as well to our crackerjack fundraising team of Kathy Powell, Kathy Allen, and Judy Zimmerman. We appreciate over forty-five years of participation and support from Ted Jones, one of the founding members of the Bloomington Chamber Singers. Ted has retired from the organization, but is leaving us with many gifts to cherish going forward. We invite you to share our love of choral music with us tonight. Through your presence and financial support, we are able to bring Bach to life!
