From the President Making a Difference Stories of women, their lives, work and achievements are an integral part of the content we bring you every day of the year. As the nation celebrates the extraordinary accomplishments of women during Women s History Month, we highlight some special documentaries and dramas premiering this month on WGBH and on our Channel that bring those stories to life. The acclaimed documentary series Independent Lens brings us the feature film Dolores (page 18). Co-founder of the United Farm Workers union, Dolores Huerta is among the most important but least-known activists in American history. As a teacher who saw the poverty of her students and their families in 1960s California, she chose to work with and for them, in partnership with Cesar Chavez, and became a leader and negotiator in the fight for racial and labor justice for farm workers. She was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 01 and is still active today at the age of 87, training and mentoring new activists. Social justice of another kind is explored in The Invisible Patients (page 1), part of the America ReFramed series on Channel. The documentary follows Jessica MacLeod, a nurse practitioner who cares for homebound patients whose chronic illnesses and poverty limit their access to medical care. Her experiences shed light on some of the most challenging health care issues facing our nation today, from the living conditions of the elderly poor and end-of-life care, to the costs of hospitalization and complexity of insurance. Through MacLeod s work, we gain insight into the plight of some 5 million Americans and consider how care can be offered with dignity and respect. A very different era in health care, seen through fictionalized characters in 1960s London, makes its return this month in Call the Midwife (page 16). The perennial favorite premieres a seventh season of the drama portraying the midwives, nurses and nuns caring for poor expectant mothers in London s East End. Based on the memoirs of midwife Jennifer Worth, the stories take us to a time and place that bring forward a range of issues and acknowledge both the struggles and triumphs of these strong characters. We hope you enjoy the deep calendar of programs we have to offer this month and every month. It s all possible thanks to your generous support. 99.5 WCRB Two Bs or Not Two Bs By Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager One of the odd confluences in classical music is the number of major composers whose names start with either the letter M or the letter B. Among the Ms are some big names in classical music Mozart, Mussorgsky, Massenet, Monteverdi, Mendelssohn, Mahler, Mascagni, Menotti, Messiaen and Milhaud and lesser known composers, such as Mysliveček, Matteis, Molter and Merula. And among the Bs, there are Beethoven, Barber, Bartók, Bellini, Berg, Berlioz, Berwald, Bizet, Bloch, Boccherini, Borodin, Boyce, Brahms, Britten, Bruch, Bruckner, Busoni, Buxtehude and Byrd. I ve left out two very important composers whose names start with B: Johann Sebastian Bach and Leonard Bernstein. That s because, in another interesting confluence, WCRB will feature major concerts in March that include works by both. The Leonard Bernstein Centennial is in full swing, as orchestras and arts groups around the world delve into the compositional brilliance of the Lawrence, Massachusetts native. (Visit Classical.org the official digital partner of the Bernstein Centennial to explore The Bernstein Experience.) This month, the Boston Symphony Orchestra is playing two of Bernstein s symphonies on consecutive weeks: March 17 features the Symphony No. 3, known as Kaddish, and on March 4, you can experience the Symphony No., known as The Age of Anxiety. Both concerts will air live on WCRB, as do all BSO concerts on Saturdays at 8pm. A full schedule for the month appears to the right. And in addition to the BSO, WCRB In Concert (Sundays at 7pm) will feature Bernstein as well, as the Neave Trio performs his Piano Trio No. (March 5). As for Bach, during his 333rd birthday this month, WCRB In Concert includes a performance by the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig, which Bach himself once led, and another by Boston s own Handel and Haydn Society. See the complete schedule on the right: BSO Broadcasts Saturday, March 3 (encore Monday, March 1) Alan Gilbert, conductor Leila Josefowicz, violin Sibelius: En Saga Debussy: Jeux Adams: Scheherazade. WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station And Now for Something Completely Different By Mindy Todd, WCAI Host and Managing Director for Editorial Variety is the spice of life. And on WCAI s Arts & Ideas on Sunday night, you never know what you re going to hear. Since its first broadcast 17 years ago, Arts & Ideas has been hosted by WCAI founder Jay Allison. The show airs every Sunday from 7pm to 11pm. We have always kept this four-hour slot available for improvisation, for something new every week, for stories that don t fit, Allison said. Arts & Ideas is a home for wayward radio the odd and eccentric, the surprising and creative, the edgy and unpredictable. Stories for Arts & Ideas initially came from cassette tapes on Allison s bookshelf from years of accumulated audio art and documentary. After a while, though, he ran out of material and began calling his friends to send him their favorites. Eventually, the need to fill this slot became a motivator for Allison s work in creating the Public Radio Exchange. Known as PRX, it is now a repository for thousands of stories. Arts & Ideas is different from other radio shows because it has the capacity to quickly respond to events that change the landscape in some way, such as the passing of a musician or author or the flare-up of a political controversy, said Viki Merrick, associate director of Atlantic Public Media, who produces the show. We can change the lineup pretty easily to accommodate long form on any given subject. The show has played a role in encouraging new work at the national level. For example, the first national broadcast of The Moth Radio Hour was on Arts & Ideas. Allison and Merrick were also early champions of Radiolab, Snap Judgment, Invisibilia, Freakonomics and many other programs that have gone on to find regular slots in weekly public radio schedules around the country. The two continue to work as a team to keep the stories fresh. I try to keep changing lenses every time I go looking for programming, Merrick said. It s great to get feedback from listeners about what they liked or would like to hear more of it helps vary the mix of content. In the heavily formatted world of broadcasting, it s rare to have a spot like WCAI s Arts & Ideas. I wish more public radio stations would do this, Allison said. Without cracks in the schedule like this, there is no room for new things to grow.
