3 From the President Our Own March Madness Education is at the core of everything we do at WGBH. Every day we celebrate learning in many ways: from our programs and apps for preschoolers, to our classroom resources on PBS LearningMedia, to our historical documentaries for adults. But our award-winning academic competition, High School Quiz Show, puts the spotlight on the scholastic rigor of Massachusetts high school students. Now entering its 10th season, High School Quiz Show is our version of March Madness, substituting academic excellence for athletic prowess. Using the brackets on page 11, you can follow the 16 schools that qualified for the competition as they advance in each single-elimination round in hopes of claiming the honor of state champion. I find it hard to contain my enthusiasm for High School Quiz Show when I see the excitement of high school students from communities across our Commonwealth come through the WGBH studios. Over the last decade, we ve been able to give thousands of Massachusetts young people this special experience to demonstrate their knowledge. High School Quiz Show has found its way into the homes and hearts of communities across the state, says Executive Producer and Director of Youth Media Hillary Wells. We look forward to 10 more years of this series as well as to finding additional opportunities to serve the needs of this important demographic. Each season the show evolves to engage and challenge our contestants in new ways. We ve expanded our subjects to include current events and regularly feature video questions from famous Bay Staters that have included Mindy Kaling and Steve Carell as well as local and national government leaders. As in any contest, teamwork is important. We are proud to be endorsed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and have had its support in developing questions that align with the state curriculum standards in literature, history, civics, science and math. And High School Quiz Show also has received the endorsement of the Massachusetts PTA whose dedicated teachers, parents and administrators support learning in our schools every day. March also brings the national celebration of Women s History Month, and we have a number of special programs that feature women in the arts, at the center of global movements and in the forefront of important moments of our time. Join us for Women, War & Peace II (page 15), a four-part series from a slate of all-female directors who present never-before-told stories about women around the world risking their lives for peace. And in Great Performances/Julius Caesar (page 18), Shakespeare s famous discourse on power, loyalty and tragic idealism is heightened against the backdrop of female incarceration with an all-women cast. Education touches every part of our lives. That s why we work hard to create meaningful content and experiences that cultivate the joy of learning. Thank you for making it possible through your support. 28 Boston s Local NPR WGBH News Hits the Road for Political Coverage As part of WGBH s commitment to bring 89.7 listeners where the news happens, WGBH Host and Executive Editor Joe Mathieu anchored Morning Edition in January from Washington, DC, at the start of the legislative session. The Morning Edition team covered the shift of congressional power from the nation s capital as the country was embroiled in a partial shutdown of the federal government. Mathieu caught up with US Rep. Ayanna Pressley, the first African American woman to represent Massachusetts, in the halls of the Capitol building. He also interviewed Massachusetts legislators Seth Moulton, Jim McGovern and Lori Trahan to learn about their legislative priorities. At the same time, WGBH News political reporter Adam Reilly traveled to Iowa to join US Sen. Elizabeth Warren s first trip since forming her exploratory presidential committee. During five campaign stops, Reilly reported what Warren presented as her national platform to the Midwestern audiences who packed bars, theatres and community centers to hear the Massachusetts senator speak. In addition to filing stories for WGBH News, he shared his observations on Boston Public Radio and Greater Boston and appeared nationally on MSNBC s The Last Word with Lawrence O Donnell. Reilly also accompanied Warren and her team to Puerto Rico and WGBH reporter Saraya Wintersmith traveled with the senator to South Carolina. Both reporters have taken trips to New Hampshire to cover Warren s growing campaign activities in the state. Eric in the Evening Women in Jazz Celebrate the growing presence of women in jazz with a special show dedicated to fabulous female artists and their contributions to the field of music. Host Eric Jackson features flautist Jamie Baum, pianist Yoko Miwa, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, bassist Esperanza Spalding and other talented performers in a harmonious tribute in honor of Women s History Month. Sun, 3/4 at 9pm The flurry of out-of-state political coverage comes at a time when the Massachusetts delegation has clinched powerful positions within the 116th Congress. McGovern is the chair of the House Rules Committee, US Rep. Richard Neal helms the House Ways and Means Committee, and US Rep. Katherine Clark was elected the Democratic Caucus vice chair. Massachusetts politics play a large role on the national stage, said WGBH News Director Kate Zachry. Our reporters, producers and hosts have an expansive knowledge about our state s political issues, and we know political coverage resonates with our audience, she said. We re fortunate to have the resources to place our reporters and, therefore, our audience right in the middle of these stories, whether we re on the campaign trail in Iowa and New Hampshire, broadcasting from the capital, or reporting from the State House or a Boston City Council meeting right here in our own backyard. 29 Classical Radio Boston Spring Ahead with Bach By Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager In like a lion, out like a lamb? Meteorologists have all kinds of catchy descriptions for March, the month that takes us from winter to spring. But for WCRB, March has a special significance. It marks the anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach s birth, which gives us the chance to focus on one of the most important composers in the repertoire. Whether you re a Bach fan already or whether you d like to become more familiar with the master, the best place to start is with The Bach Hour hosted by WCRB s Brian McCreath. This wonderful series is heard every Sunday at 6am and is available on our website, classicalwcrb.org. On March 1, Bach s actual birthday, we ll begin the celebration at midnight with a classic recording of The Goldberg Variations, which was composed to be played for a count s sleepless nights. Then throughout that day, we ll focus on some of Bach s most beloved masterpieces, including all four Orchestral Suites and all six Brandenburg Concertos. And as for our seminal weekend shows the BSO Broadcasts live from Symphony Hall and WCRB In Concert there are five weekends of incredible variety for you. A complete schedule for both series follows. 30 Cape and Islands NPR Station A Bibliophile s Guide to Women s History Month By Mindy Todd, WCAI Host and Managing Director for Editorial Book lovers of all kinds can dig into a monthly discussion of their favorite nonfiction or prose on The Point, WCAI s award-winning public affairs program. Women s History Month sets the stage for March s confab about all things related to books. What began as a one-time half-hour chat about books on WCAI many years ago has evolved into a monthly hour-long conversation with its own following of bibliophiles. Each show begins with a single topic anything from food to baseball to war and even the American West. From there, it can go in almost any direction. For example, one show started with a discussion about transportation turned into a conversation about Mary Poppins and her favorite mode of travel the umbrella! Jill Erickson (right, with Mindy Todd), who is the reference librarian at Falmouth Public Library, joins the show on the last Wednesday of every month. She shares her expertise with other panelists, including booksellers, librarians, authors and naturalists. None of the guests know ahead of time what each will bring to the table, so every discussion is different. The show on tap for Women s History Month is not so much a review of new books but rather a suggestion of what books to read. You can expect a few picture books on the topic, a poem or two and some great novels involving great women, Erickson said. Regular fan favorites throughout the year include the annual list of Cape Cod reads and recommendations for summer reading. One of the joys of the show is that it s live, so listeners are encouraged to participate. They can call in or their suggestions or add them to the online list of books that WCAI posts each month. Their contributions never cease to delight and fascinate the experts. We are always astonished at how closely listeners pay attention! Erickson said. She described a time when a listener brought a copy of the book Trees in a Winter Landscape by Alice Smith after she heard Erickson talk about how much she loved trees in the winter on a show devoted to books and trees. After a discussion on mysteries, another listener showed up at the Falmouth Public Library reference desk with a big bag of Josephine Tey paperback mysteries after I said how much my mother enjoyed reading them but that I hadn t read any yet. On Wednesday, March 7 at 9am, tune in to The Point to hear the WCAI book lovers celebration of Women s History Month. More details are on capeandislands.com.
