Custodial History Bulk of the material assembled by Emory University Archives staff and organized by musical group or concert series. Audio visual material received separately from the old Department of Music office on Oxford Road. Citation [after identification of item(s)], Department of Music collection, Emory University Archives, Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, Emory University. Processing Processed by Emory University Archives staff. Collection Description Administrative History The Department of Music was established as an academic department in 1965 with Dr. E. Chappell White serving as the department's first chair. Before its inception music instruction had been offered through the Department of Fine Arts, of which Dr. White had been chair. In 1967 Dr. William Lemonds assumed the position of chair of the department until 1980. The Department of Music sponsors and coordinates a number of musical performances at the University. Students, faculty, musical professionals, and amateurs have performed at Emory as part of Emory ensembles, orchestras, and chorales or through various hosted events such as concert series, festivals, and recitals. Scope and Content Note Records primarily contain handbills, programs, promotional materials, correspondence, clippings, scrapbooks, and recordings documenting musical performances, recitals, and ensembles produced and sponsored by Emory's Department of Music. Performance series and groups best represented in the Groups, Concert Series, and Events materials series include the Women's Chorale and Glee Club, Collegium Musicum (which has also been called the Bach Chorus, Atlanta Chorale, and Collegium Vocale), the Emory Chamber Music Guild (String Quartet), Emory University Concert Series, Emory University Orchestra, and Flora Glenn Candler Concert Series. Additonal festivals, choral and operatic groups, and musical series are also represented in the collection. The Audio Recordings series consists of audio recordings of performances held under the auspices of the Department of Music, though some of the recordings recovered from the Department of Music offices predate the official establishment of the department. Likewise some of the paper records for oganizations established before 1965 antedate the Department of Music. The collection also contains the captured and preserved web site of the Department of Music, available for browsing via the Web Archiving Service of the California Digital Library Arrangement Note Organized into 3 series: (1) Groups, Concert Series, and Events materials, (2) Audio Recordings, and (3) Web archives. 2
