READING AND WRITING MUSIC: TEACHER S GUIDE 1. INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY 1 They are all different languages. ACTIVITY 2 WORDS: language; words; written; code; durations; sounds. ACTIVITY 3 (Melody to play or sing) 2.1. NOTES IN THE TREBLE CLEF ACTIVITY 6 The story: John was walking when he saw a FACE looking at him. It was a baby. He looked lost. I wonder what AGE he is? thought John. The baby started to cry. Should I FEED him?. Then, John saw a woman. She was calling ED, ED. John was so happy because the baby was not lost any more. Material AICLE. 1º de ESO: Reading and writing music (Solucionario) 3

ACTIVITY 7 TEXT: Notes higher up the stave have a higher pitch. Notes lower down have a lower pitch. As there are only nine positions within the stave to write notes, other symbols are used to show how high or low the sounds are. Clefs are used for this purpose. Notes on the stave sit differently for each clef. The treble clef is used for high sounds, for example, the ones played by a violin, flute, or the right half of a piano. It is also known as G clef because it shows that g is placed on the second line (where the curl of the clef starts). The bass clef is used for low sounds, for example, the ones played by the cello, tuba, or the left half of a piano. It is also known as F clef because it shows that f is placed on the fourth line (just between the two dots). The C clef is used for middle-pitched sounds, for example, the ones played by the viola or the trombone. it has four different positions, showing where the note c sits (first, second, third or fourth line). 3.1 NOTE VALUES ACTIVITY 1 2 Minims (half note) A semibreve (whole note) = 4 8 Crotchets (quarter note) Quavers (eight note) 16 Semiquavers (sixteenth note) 4 Material AICLE. 1º de ESO: Reading and writing music (Solucionario)

ACTIVITY 17 ACTIVITY 18 COMPOUND TIME SIGNATURES ACTIVITY 1 TEXT: You have been working with simple time signatures 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 where the beat is divided by two. However, there is also music in which the beat is divided by three. Music of this kind uses other time signatures called compound times, and they have an 8 as the bottom number. 8 Material AICLE. 1º de ESO: Reading and writing music (Solucionario)

4. ACCIDENTALS ACTIVITY 4 E#= F Cb= B ACTIVITY 5 The enharmonic note of E# is F The enharmonic note of Cb is B The enharmonic note of Fb is E The enharmonic note of B# is C ACTIVITY 6 A# E# Db G# D# Bb C# F# Gb Ab ACTIVITY 7 Text in the correct order: When you draw an accidental, all the notes of the same pitch after it in the same bar are affected. This means that if you see a C#, every C of the same bar after it sounds sharp. The natural cancels the effect of the previous flat or sharp. If you don t want them to sound like that, use the natural symbol to undo the sharp. ACTIVITY 8 Material AICLE. 1º de ESO: Reading and writing music (Solucionario) 9
