ABOUT OUR PLAY A Year With Frog and Toad Kids Book and Lyrics By Willie Reale Music By Robert Reale Based on the Books by Arnold Lobel Directed by Christina Lobello Musically Directed by Andy Catanese This whimsical show follows two great friends the cheerful, popular Frog, and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. Throughout the year, two best friends celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special.
CHARACTERS FROG: Frog is a friendly, confidant, positive and caring character. This leading role requires a strong actor and singer. He should always seem comfortable solving Toad's problems and reacting to Toad's traumas. TOAD: Toad is serious, irritable, self-conscious yet an oddly charismatic character. The friendship that he shares with Frog must appear loyal through and through. TURTLE: Turtle is a "rabble-rouser" and loves to get the whole gang to tease Toad in fun! MOUSE: Mouse is always able to ask all the right questions like a talk-show host. Mouse, like Turtle, is full of fun and they should have a good chemistry because of their call/response dialogue and song. LIZARD: Lizard is definitely the most confused of the Turtle, Mouse, Lizard trio, but eventually joins in the fun. SNAIL: The Snail is simply unflappable, has a ton of personality and confidence. He (she) will deliver without fail "in the rain or sleet or snow." BIRDS: The Birds communicate the passage of time (seasons) and set the stage for the story to follow. MOLES: The Moles should have expressive faces to convey the excitement in Down The Hill as well as sincerity in their angelic solo Merry Almost Christmas. SQUIRRELS: The Squirrels are full of mischief and fun. YOUNG FROG, MOTHER FROG, FATHER FROG: They are in the dream sequence. LARGE and TERRIBLE TOAD (VOICE): Played by a puppet, the star of Frog s childhood nightmares MONOLOGUE Please select one to memorize to perform at your audition. TOAD Frog is late. At least I think she s late. She must be. It s already getting dark out. Maybe something happened to him. Something bad. Something terrible. Maybe he is lost in the dark, or stuck at the bottom of a hole, or being chased by a wolf! Frog may be in terrible danger. I must help my friend! I must get a light! (Picks up a lantern) a piece of rope, and a frying pan. Don t you worry, Frog. I will save you! I am prepared for any situation! Frog! Frog! Don t worry, I ll save you! YOUNG FROG I m a young little frog all alone in the night. My parents have left, which doesn t seem right. I am very afraid, that is how I feel. I don t wish do end up a meal. I think eating others is rude and I bet that it hurts being chewed! I have such ambitious dreams and wishes and none of my plans include not growing up because I wound up being food.
