String Along Program (Years 2 and 3) Levels 1 and 2 Students in this program have the opportunity to learn a string instrument (violin, viola or cello) in small groups of three or four with 30 minute lessons each week. Students will have performance opportunities throughout the year including major performances at Christmas in June and Showcase. Levy $125 per term including tutor book is added to term school fees. Play Along Band Program (Years 4 to 7) Levels 1 and 2 Research shows learning to read music and play a musical instrument has many academic, individual and social benefits. Our Play Along Band Program is a fantastic opportunity for all students to become involved in music and the is an important component of the music development curriculum offered at our College. Over the course of the year students receive quality tuition on a musical instrument, rehearsals and performance opportunities. Music appreciation and musicianship skills are developed through this low cost program. Instrument allocation is organised by the Director of Performance Music in collaboration with the specialist Instrumental Music Teachers. Allocation can be based on the following important criteria: The student s results from the Selmer Musical Aptitude Test (a test measuring pitch recognition, harmony, melody and rhythmic understanding. The student s physical characteristics and the ability to physically play that instrument. Musical academic ability displayed in the results of the Selmer Test. Students preferences will be taken into consideration and every effort will be made to provide them with tuition on their preferred instrument however this may not always be the case. In order to reach our long term goal of developing well-balanced school ensembles, this program must maintain a balance of instruments. Regardless of which instrument a student learns for the year, the most important aspect of the program is every student in the Play Along Program is learning the universal language of music and skills that will last a life time. The following year they will be able to learn whatever instrument they prefer through our individual and group tuition program. Levy $125 per term including tutor book is added to term school fees. Sing Along Program (Years 4, 5 and 6) Students in this program have the opportunity to receive vocal tuition in small groups of three or four with 30 minute lessons each week. Students will have performance opportunities throughout the year in College groups including our major performances at Showcase in October. Levy $125 per term is added to term school fees.

Individual Lessons Individual lessons are the ideal most advantageous way of learning and students can enrol in private lessons on all instruments including voice at the levy set each year which is listed on the Tuition Enrolment Form. Some restrictions apply to which year levels students can learn the different instruments. Enrolments are organised through our School of Music. Lesson times are negotiated directly with the instrumental teacher. Students may study no more than two instruments at school at any one time. Individual Tuition 20 or 30 minute lessons Individual lessons 20 to 30 minutes in duration, take place during school hours and in Middle and Senior School are rotated or negotiated with the student weekly so students avoid missing the same class, and avoid missing assessment periods. While lesson times are negotiated, it should be remembered that teachers have limited lesson times available especially if they are only at school for a short period of time. Instrumental Shared Lessons (subject to demand and availability) Students are entitled to be enrolled in shared instrumental lessons on brass, strings, woodwind instruments, guitar and vocal lessons where there is another student on the same instrument and of an equivalent ability level. If a workable shared lesson cannot be formed, the student will be allocated a 20 minute individual lesson. Shared lessons last 30 minutes, take place during school hours and in Middle and Senior School are rotated or negotiated with the student weekly so students avoid missing the same class and avoid missing assessment periods. Continued participation in lessons is subject to a student s attitude, attendance and pursuit of excellence in performance in both their lesson and ensemble. Students must bring instrument, music and other necessary equipment to all lessons and rehearsals. Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) or Trinity College of London Exams Students are encouraged to sit for external AMEB or TRINITY exams. Students wishing to undertake these examinations must have 30 minute individual lessons. Results from Grade Four and above are included on a student exit statement when leaving school. Ensembles Program Our Ensembles Program provides students of all interests and ability levels with opportunities to develop their music skills by playing and / or singing in our performance groups. Students receive acknowledgement on annual reports of their involvement in our ensembles as recognition of their commitment to the musical life of our College. Students involved in our ensembles are expected to fully commit to rehearsals and performances for the entire school year. Our School of Music is committed to providing regular rehearsals and performance opportunities for our young musicians. Extended tours and music camps are organised from time to time to enhance performance opportunities. Involvement in ensembles is a team effort. Everyone shares and benefits from the loyal and devoted commitment to this very public aspect of our Music at Calvary (MAC) program. Please direct all enquiries regarding our Performance Music Program to Barry Warden, Director of Performance Music. Phone 3209 0265 or e-mail barry.warden@calvarycc.qld.edu.au

INSTRUMENTAL and VOCAL TUITION PROGRAM Our School of Music arranges lessons by specialist instrumental and vocal teaching staff at our College during the school day for students wishing to undertake individual, or in some cases, shared lessons. Payment is a matter between the teacher and parents with lessons normally invoiced at the commencement of each term and payable prior to commencement of lessons. Priority for out of school time is given to Year 12 then 11 etc. Parents and students are reminded while these teachers are not staff members of our College they are to be treated with the same respect and consideration as all other staff members. We ask you to respect the fact these people rely on your payment of lessons for their livelihoods, and request you make sure their accounts are paid promptly. Once enrolled in this program, students are expected to continue lessons for at least one semester. To cease lessons, parents must advise our Director of Performance Music in writing of their intention four weeks prior to the end of the semester or payment in lieu. In the case of illness on the day of a lesson, please advise your music teacher prior to 8.00 a.m. (they will give you their mobile number) the student will not be at school. YEAR 4 BAND PROGRAM As part of our College s commitment to inclusive learning, all Year 4 students will participate in our newly introduced Year 4 Band Program. The concentration and application required to learn a musical instrument has been shown to enhance a student s academic ability in a wide range of key learning areas This program does not take the place of a student s involvement in our Performance Music Program but rather seeks to introduce all students to the academic and social benefits of learning an instrument. Overview The Year 4 Band Program is an exciting and practical way of learning about music. Lessons take place during a timetabled lesson once each week. Each student will be allocated a College owned instrument for the Semester their class is involved. The program is designed to provide a fun, dynamic and stimulating environment for students to learn how to play a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument. Our Year 4 Band Program is carefully tailored to suit the needs and learning capabilities of this particular age group. Students will be encouraged to have fun while at the same time developing a strong instrumental music foundation whatever their prior musical experiences and achievements. It is also an expectation that students consider the acquisition of instrumental skills an important part of their everyday learning obligation. Students should practice for 10 minutes a day four or five times a week. Parents are asked to support the program by providing students with encouragement, a quiet place to practice and help students establish a regular practice routine. The program culminates with a special performance for parents, other family members and interested members of our school community at the end of the semester. Band Lessons All band lessons will take place during a regular lesson time each week. This time may be divided between sectional lessons where instruments of the same family (Brass, Woodwind and Percussion) receive tuition from a specialist music tutor or students may participate in a whole band class lesson. Lessons in our Year 4 Band Program will be provided free of charge Selection of Instruments The first three weeks of the program will have students rotating between the three sections (Brass, Woodwind and Percussion) to play the different instruments. During that time they will be assessed by our specialist instrumental teachers to see which instrument is most suited to their size, finger spread, formation of teeth and jaw which all have a bearing on what instrument a student is most suited to. Students will be asked to indicate two instruments they liked most and if the instrument is suitable for them and available, we will try and allocate an instrument of their choice. Students may not always be allocated an instrument they choose the same as when they play a sport they might not always get to play the position they like best. It s important to realize that just like a sporting team is made up of a set number of positions (sections), each music ensemble is also made up of different sections. In order to maintain an appropriate balance of colour and sound the final allocation of instruments will be made by the specialist instrumental teachers. Naturally students already owning their own brass or woodwind instrument may use those. More detailed information on this program is in the Year 4 Band Program Handbook given to all Year 4 students.
