WELCOME TO Looking at the world though the lens of theatrical design.
CHANCE is a serialized art-book about contemporary theater and design. From the discerning professional seeking fresh air, to those who simply love the stage and appreciate remarkable photography, CHANCE combines uncompromising aesthetic standards with innovative approaches to visualizing and talking about theater. With a professional readership that includes some of the most influential names in producing, design, fashion and theater, CHANCE is a new magazine for a completely new kind of theater artist. Based in New York, CHANCE was founded by designers, dramaturgs and playwrights, and is devoted to finding and documenting innovative work at every level of theater - from Broadway to Off-Off-Broadway, from regional theater to international productions and burlesque - with extraordinarily vivid images that can go straight from our magazine to a designer s studio wall as they seek inspiration. We commission an original photo shoot of every production we cover because we believe that superior visual documentation will transform the way we see and think about the theater and the people who design for it. In CHANCE, a designer s work is shown clearly, often for the first time. We bring our readers on stage, back stage, and into the studio, where we illuminate the true colour, texture, detail of a designer s work. Images are complemented with interviews and conversations, as these extraordinary artists share their process with us. CHANCE is theater for the image-hungry eye. Join us.
PRINT CHANCE is more like an art-book than a magazine. It is printed on archival grade glossy and matte paper stock in landscape orientation with a perfect binding. The magazine runs approximately 250 pages in length, is nearly half an inch thick and 2 feet wide when open. We are commited to keeping the tradition of print alive, and strive to embrace the critical elements that make a serialized art-book about contemporary events in theater truly useful. To honor the extraordinary work of the designers, photographer, and writers that we feature, the morjority of CHANCE s content is kept off-line. In universe of endemically diminished returns in which only the summation of the art is monetized, while the artist is buried in reduction, we strive to preserve the integrity of the work in our magazine, and to consistnently provide images with quality and context. WEB www.chance-magazine.com is a simple yet elegant site where CHANCE readers can continue their exploration of our publication. While the magazine itself is not published on-line, we supplement many of our articles with a signature CHANCE Magazine Video Document. These web videos offer a different angle into the content of our magazine, feature exclusive interviews and never before seen photos, and allow readers to further explore and connect with the artists we feature. The website also links readers to our blog, social media, and subscription page. Overview

THE MISSION OF CHANCE is to develop and deepen a strongly visual dialogue about theater from the perspective of design, photography, architecture, art and music, and to bring this conversation to readers worldwide. We strive to express this in a measure equal to the passion, education, and aesthetic rigor that potentiates the most impactful productions, large and small. When burdened with the everyday, the lustre of design can be dimmed by budgets, exhaustion and unrewarded compromise, but the drive to perfect it endures undiminished. The goal of CHANCE is to move now private discussions about aesthetics to the national stage and ignite an active, focused, art-driven dialogue about what makes theater dangerous and to discover, in the act, the transformative potential of theater as literature, as philosophy, as art, installation and sculpture. This is a universe of endemically diminished returns in which only the summation of the art is monetized, while the artist is buried in reduction. The ensuing silence for designers, for artists, for creators is truly deafening. While originally begun to end the silence for theater artists and to activate a dialogue about art and design amongst those who care about it most, CHANCE accepts the more challenging project, in concert with our esteemed friends in art and literature editorial, to embrace the critical points that make a serialized art-book about contemporary events in theater truly useful: A from-the-ground-up, honest connection with our readers, completely original photography, A strong, curatorial frame of reference, and a thorough exploration of the field. The potential for theater as a dangerous element of change within a nearly uniformly somnambulant society is striking. We believe that by carefully activating design through imagery, CHANCE can unlock this transformative potential, release the poetic strength within, and drive theater to a new level of confrontation and engagement within a largely numb and silent world.
