ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS Audition Notice

KEY DATES Workshop Monday 16 May 2016 Auditions Saturday 11 June 2016 Sunday 12 June 2016 (am) Recalls Sunday 12 June 2016 (pm) Tuesday 14 June 2016 Tech rehearsal Sunday 2 October 2016 Dress rehearsal Monday 3 October 2016 Show dates Tuesday 4 October 2016 Wednesday 5 October 2016 Thursday 6 October 2016 Friday 7 October 2016 Saturday 8 October 2016 SHOW VENUE Bridewell Theatre Bride Lane London EC2V 5DX 2

ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS By Richard Bean Based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni Including the song from the original National Theatre production Tomorrow Looks Good From Here by Grant Olding and Richard Bean Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect 6,000 from his fiancée s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Holed up at The Cricketers Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be reunited with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple. In Richard Bean s English version of Goldoni s classic Italian comedy, sex, food and money are high on the agenda. A riotous farce and one of the funniest productions in The National s history in taking an old Italian play, The National has not only improved Goldoni but also struck gold. GUARDIAN An instant hit This is the most hilarious comic evening in the theatre since Noises Off, and could easily run as long THE STAGE A golden thread of theatre comedy runs all the way from Plautus to panto, from The Comedy of Errors to Fawlty Towers, with Goldoni at a crossroads between Commedia dell Arte and modern farce Many layers of fun. THE TIMES 3

OUR SHOW I ll admit I didn t have particularly high expectations of One Man, Two Guvnors when I first saw it at the National; I knew nothing of the show and, at the time, I found James Corden intensely irritating. With the benefit of hindsight, it is little surprise my expectations were so dramatically surpassed (even James Corden). It is a rich experience as an audience member given all the elements which combine: witty dialogue, physical comedy, audience interaction, a little improvisation, and a band. Richard Bean s script is wonderful reminiscent of the old Carry On movies, but with far sharper dialogue. The sixties setting is inspired, with the care free attitude of the era supporting an implausible plot well. Not to mention that it is a fantastic era for costume. I m thrilled that the show is part of Sedos 2016 programme. Inevitably our version of Brighton, recreated in the beautiful Bridewell Theatre, will look and feel different to the National s spectacle. But fidelity to the spirit of the original production is important to us. We want audiences to enjoy a good night out, and for the ensemble cast, Richard Bean s delightful script and the live band to complement one another in achieving that. If there is one word which succinctly articulates what we hope to deliver for cast, band, crew and audiences alike, it is: fun. We look forward to seeing you at the audition, Alex 4

OUR TEAM THE TEAM ALEX BAKER Director Alex has appeared in a number of Sedos shows, including The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Macbeth, and two shows at the Edinburgh festival (The Government Inspector and As You Like It). He has also appeared in several pantomimes at London s Peacock Theatre. He has been on the radio a fair bit, too. One Man Two Guvnors is his debut as a director for Sedos. TRACIE LAURINAITIS Assistant Director Tracie has been a member of Sedos since 2010 and has been assistant director of a number of Sedos shows including, Noises Off, Americana, Enron, and Sink the Belgrano. When not helping to boss people around, she likes to tread the boards and has also acted in a number of production with London theatre companies. ZOE THOMAS WEBB Assistant Director Zoe has previously directed various Sedos shows, most recently a rehearsed reading of the Pulitzer Prize winning 'Clybourne Park' by Bruce Norris. She has also directed for other companies, including KDC, Tower Theatre, So It Goes and her own production company Urgent Breath. ED CURRY Musical Director Ed Curry has directed music for concerts, operas, pantomimes, musicals and plays with music in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London. He has written music for NSDF award winning plays 'Normal' and 'Unknown Album'. He has performed with Sedos both on stage and in the pit, and is delighted to be on board for this production of a play he finds very funny! CLARE HARDING Producer Clare has been a member of Sedos since January 2012 and has been involved, in some way, in pretty much every production since. She has previously taken the producer seat on four shows, most recently Such Stuff as Dreams are Made On and Victor/Victoria. EDITH WEBB Costume Design Edith has previously designed Boeing, Boeing, The Government Inspector, As You Like and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot for Sedos. She has also designed shows for various other companies. ROBERT J. STANEX Set Design Bob has been with Sedos for 6 seasons and has been on the committee for the last 3. He has designed sets for I Love You Because, Legally Blonde and Such Stuff as Dreams are Made On. 5

AUDITION PROCESS WORKSHOP Monday 16 May 2016, 7pm 1 Brewers Hall Garden, EC2V 5BX ( Click here for a map ) The workshop will be an opportunity to learn more about the show, our production and to meet members of the team. It is informal and no preparation is necessary. We plan on heading to the pub at around 8.30pm. Attending the workshop isn t mandatory if you intend on auditioning: whether you get cast or not is entirely independent of the workshop. If you are planning on attending the workshop please email Clare at omtg@sedos.co.uk so we have an idea of numbers. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR The play is an ensemble piece: there are no lead roles. So teamwork and a generous attitude is important. It s a fun show and we want both the cast and audience to have fun, too. Much of the comedy works best when delivered in an understated way; we don t want the cast to play for laughs, or to be ham. We have not provided casting ages as we do not want to restrict ourselves. As long as the age relationships between relevant characters feels right, then we do not see the need to stick firmly to the age guides in the script. Boateng need not be Jamaican, though he is not white. The actor playing Alfie need not be old, though the character definitely is. Actors for certain of the characters require good physical comedy skills, the ability to improvise or the ability to interact with the audience (or all three). All cast members will have to sing the mandatory song at the end of the show, though we are not looking for perfect singing voices. The ability to hold a tune and style it out in character is fine. We will assemble the band and cast singers later in the year and will make further details available nearer the time. 7

AUDITIONS Saturday 11 June 2016 Sunday 12 June 2016 (am) London Theatre Workshop, 88 Gracechurch Street, Leadenhall Market, London, EC3V 0DN ( Click here for a map ) These will be workshop style auditions for which no preparation is necessary. The workshops will be a mix of games, movement and group improvisation. There will also be a basic singing element. We will hold three 90 minute sessions on Saturday 11 June 2016 (11am, 1.15pm, and 3.30pm) and one late in the morning of Sunday 12 June 2016. RECALLS Sunday 12 June 2016 (pm) Tuesday 14 June 2016 (evening) London Theatre Workshop, 88 Gracechurch Street, Leadenhall Market, London, EC3V 0DN ( Click here for a map ) Recalls will test the range of skills we require of actors, including improvisation and physicality. We will use passages from the play and these will be provided. We will aim to cast certain of the characters on the afternoon of Sunday 12 June 2016, and the remaining characters on the evening of Tuesday 14 June 2016. Irrespective of the part you wish to audition for, you should ideally be available for recalls on both of these dates. 8

USEFUL INFORMATION BOOKING AN AUDITION To book an audition please email Clare at omtg@sedos.co.uk specifying a first and second choice audition slot and if you are interested in any particular parts. If you are unable to make the advertised audition dates, and wish to audition, please get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate your availability. AUDITION RESTRICTIONS 2016 is one of (if not the) busiest seasons Sedos has ever committed to with 10 individual productions. Because of overlapping rehearsal and production dates it will not be possible for you to be cast in One Man Two Guvnors as well as the following Sedos productions: Frenemies or Ritual Slaughter of Gorge Mastromas. For non Sedos productions it is unadvisable for you to be cast in any show which will be rehearsing or performing between August and October 2016. AUDITION, PARTICIPATION AND MEMBERSHIP FEES Sedos is one of London s premier amateur theatre societies with the aim of producing quality amateur theatre to the best artistic quality possible. In the nature of amateur theatre performers are not paid not even expenses. To perform in One Man Two Guvnors you must be a member of Sedos ( membership is currently 35 per year, 30 if paid by Direct Debit ) and pay a participation fee of 30. There is a 5 audition fee for non Sedos members. BACKSTAGE HELP If you are not interested in auditioning, but are interested in helping out backstage, in any capacity (from crewing to building scenery, sewing costumes and front of house) please contact Clare at omtg@sedos.co.uk with details of what you are interested in doing. REHEARSALS We plan to start rehearsals in July, rehearsing on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons in July and August. We will add Monday evenings from September. We plan a cast trip to Brighton early in the rehearsal schedule. There will be an additional full day rehearsal on Saturday 1 October 2016. Where possible all rehearsals will be held at 1 Brewers Hall Gardens. If for any reason this is not possible then rehearsals will be held at a venue in Zone 1. 9
