Treasure State Orff News-Fall 2014 Fall Workshop October 4, 2014 Julie Scott The Orff Schulwerk media are best known as singing, saying, moving, and playing. So why do so many people seem to think of this approach as the one with the instruments? In this hands-on workshop, we will explore song setting of the Schulwerk. Materials will include an original folk song setting and pieces by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman from the Murray edition of Music for children. The pieces presented will also include Orff instruments, games, and dances. Come prepared to join in the fun! Julie Scott is Associate Professor of Practice in Music Education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she has taught for nine years. Dr. Scott received her Ph.D. from Eastman School of Music. She has taught elementary music, served as a district music coordinator and has directed a 100-voice fifth grade honor choir. She is a past president of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. As Director of Music Educators Workshops at SMU, she has taught summer Orff Schulwerk courses to adults for the past twenty-five years. Julie not only presents conference sessions and workshops at music conferences throughout the country, she has presented internationally at conferences in Greece, Australia, China, Italy, and Thailand.

Musical greetings to all of you! This time of year always makes me think of one of my favorite movies, You ve Got Mail. Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) writes to Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan), Don t you love New York in the Fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms. For me, this time of year makes me think of our wonderful Treasure State Orff workshops and the fun of the year ahead making music with my students. My name is Traci Mazanec and I am very excited to be the new Treasure State Orff President. I teach general music to five hundred and twenty second through fifth graders in East Helena. My own young children, Isaac and Andrew, and my husband, Mike, show me daily the amazing gift of music in our lives. The new school year brings many new changes to our TSO chapter. Mary Wood has graduated into the land of Past-Presidents, joining many other illustrious Orff leaders. Congratulations, Mary, and thanks for all you ve done for our organization over the last few years. We welcome several new board members, Renie Gibson as historian and two new members-at-large, Dave Klassy and Elaina Blass. In addition, Julie Blakeslee is our new treasurer and future president. We are always on the lookout for new leadership in our chapter so please let us know if this interests any of you as the year goes on. Have a wonderful 2014-15 school year. Traci Mazanec

Dr. Lori Gray, Instructor This three-week course will include classroom lectures and experiential learning, a field trip to the world famous Orff Institute during the group travel to Salzburg, and trips to performances by children. Vienna is a vibrant city full of venues with a variety of arts events. Many of the venues offer programs for children and events for school groups. This course will explore the ways that children interact with the arts and how adults can provide arts experiences for children. Though Orff s approach is for music instruction, the creative and exploratory nature of the approach lends itself well to integration with other art forms and subject areas. As a class, we will explore innovative ways to engage children in arts experiences related to additional topics including culture and society, history, and literature and storytelling. Participants will actively engage in arts experiences, reflect upon arts performances and viewings, and discover new ways to inspire creativity and learning for children through the arts.
