Listening 2 ( Items 6-10 ) I have always loved travelling by train. It s not quick or convenient as flying, but it s a real experience. you have time to see the country and to meet ordinary people, and for me, as a writer, it s important to have that kind of experience.my first book, about a train journey across SOUTH America, sold quite well, and so many publisher asked me where I wanted to go next. China, I replied. I booked a seat on the train from Paris, where I live, to Beijing. The cheapest way was to go with a group of tourist. We travelled all the way across Germany, Poland, Russia and Mongolia to the others and went off to discover by myself. In China, I travelled on forty different trains and covered ten thousand kilometers. It took me six months, and it wasn t always easy. Perhaps it was a mistake going there in the winter. Hadn t realized how cold China could be! But I enjoyed the food,and the people were polite and cheerful, even though life is hard for many of them. I saw many interesting places,but the famous Great Wall of China was very disappointing and I didn t like Chinese cities at all-so noisy and over crowded! But I shall always remember the Oasis town of Urumchi and, of course, the amazing Caves of Yungyang, which people still use as homes
