2015 MELBOURNE SEASON MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE MONTSALVAT BARN GALLERY COLLINS STREET BAPTIST CHURCH
... this is not so much an ensemble reinvented as one reborn... the quartet sounded as if they had been playing together for a lifetime: unity of interpretation, tight ensemble, fine balance, matched tone, and fluent dialogues between solo and collective lines. THE AUSTRALIAN, May 2014 WELCOME TO FQ 2015! Music begins where the possibilities of language ends. Jean Sibelius 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Jean Sibelius, whom some describe as the last of the romantics. Flinders Quartet will celebrate the life of this great composer by performing his complete string quartets, using them as a centrepiece of our programs in 2015. We are also thrilled to be performing the complete string quartet works by Sibelius in Finland as part of the 2015 Sibelius and Korpo Music Festival. Discovering these works has been one of the greatest joys and we can t wait for you to hear them. But there is much more than just Sibelius on offer in our 2015 season: Mozart, the much loved and poetic pianist Hoang Pham, Beethoven s mighty Op. 131, as well as a brilliant project focussing on the combined effect of music and film with commissions from Andrew Ford and Sweden s Mattias Lysell. Our subscribers always get a special treat to say thank you for supporting us throughout the year. We really look forward to sharing great chamber music with you in 2015! PROGRAM TWO And Action! SIBELIUS String Quartet No. 4 in D minor, Op. 56 Voces Intimae Le Sculpteur Express with film score by MATTIAS LYSELL* Le Sculpteur Express with film score by ANDREW FORD* BEETHOVEN String Quartet No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 131 *Premiere, commissioned by Flinders Quartet MELBOURNE Monday 25 May, 7.00pm MONTSALVAT Sunday 31 May, 2.30pm The film Performance featuring Beethoven s Op. 131 brought this towering piece into focus for many first time chamber music fans. It gave us the idea of exploring music in film and how our emotions are more affected by what we hear, rather than what we see. Le Sculpteur Express is from the famous Corrick Collection at the National Film and Sound Archive. The audience will see this silent film twice during the concert, once with a score by Australia s Andrew Ford and once with a score by Sweden s Mattias Lysell. Add in the best known quartet by Sibelius, Voces Intimae and we re ready for action.

Playing in a string quartet, it all comes down to Beethoven, and the last of his Op. 18 quartets is so incredibly inventive, it has us constantly on our toes. FQ has known Tom Henry since we were residents together at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts and we were thrilled to learn he had turned his hand to composition. An incredibly sophisticated and intuitive musician, we are very much looking forward to getting our hands on this new work.
