ACT 2, Inc., d.b.a. (ACT) is a 501 (c)(3) nn-prfit crpratin perating in Aberdeen, Suth Dakta. Operating n an annual budget f $458,000, the rganizatin is fueled by mre than 300 vlunteers annually, supprted by six staff members. Brief histry! ACT was funded in the fall f 1979 by tw Aberdeen residents and a grant fr $50 (fr pstage) wanting t see live theater return t Aberdeen. It munted its first prductin, Annie Get Yur Gun in the summer f 1980.! In the fall f 1983, after munting thirteen individual prductins, ACT annunced their first three shw seasn: Gdspell, The Man f La Mancha and The Dining Rm. Tday, ACT prduces six mainstage shws per year, typically cnsisting f ne majr musical, a small musical and a turing prductin. Seasn subscriptins have grwn frm 276 in 1983 t 1,400 currently.! ACT established Yung Peple s Theatre (YPT) in 1991, beginning with shrt wrkshps and summer camps. Tday, YPT prduces three shws each year, ffers classes and wrkshps and cntracts with Aberdeen Parks, Recreatin & Frestry t ffer Strybk Land Theatre (SBLT), which prduces eight shws in eight weeks and perfrms at the Strybk Land Castle in Aberdeen s Wylie Park.! ACT s prductin f Hnk! placed third at the natinal festival in 2007, which ultimately led t an internatinal perfrmance at the Wrld Festival f Children s Perfrming Arts in Tyama, Japan in 2008. Several ther awards in directing, scenic design, cstumes, music and acting have been received alng the way, making ACT the mst award-winning cmmunity theater in the state.
The Capitl Theatre, ACT s permanent hme! Until 1994, ACT was a vagabnd rganizatin perfrming in any available venue in Aberdeen. After years f planning, ACT acquired the Capitl Theatre, a 1926 vaudeville/mvie huse n Aberdeen s Main Street, as its permanent hme. In additin, 7,480 square feet f essential supprt space was purchased t insure that a fully functining theater facility culd be develped.!
